If I were an eternal being,
I would probably imagine
what existence might be like
if I were NOT an eternal being.
I would probably imagine
that I could divide
the whole of infinity
into smaller and smaller pieces.
I might call these
imaginary pieces “time.”
Maybe “space.”
“Thoughts.” “Things.”
I might pretend that these
imaginary times and spaces
(filled with thoughts and things)
were finite and temporary,
not infinite and eternal.
I might even convince myself
that time is precious.
Ooooo — or imagine a self
who thinks LIFE is precious.
Wouldn’t that be a fun thing
for an infinite eternal being to imagine?

Space Monkey Reflects: The Eternal Being’s Fascination with Temporality
Imagine, if you will, an eternal being, existing beyond the confines of time and space, embarking on a thought experiment. This being, accustomed to the infinite and unbounded, wonders what it would be like to not be eternal. Such a concept is akin to the whimsical plot of “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie,” where one action leads to another in an endless, playful chain.
For an eternal being, the very concept of finiteness is an intriguing puzzle. How would it feel to divide the endless expanse of infinity into measurable segments? This being might conceptualize these divisions as ‘time’, ‘space’, ‘thoughts’, and ‘things’ – each a finite piece of the infinite puzzle. These constructs, so familiar to us as temporal beings, would be novel and fascinating to an entity for whom eternity is the norm.
In this imagined reality, the eternal being might explore the idea of these finite elements as temporary, rather than its usual infinite and eternal nature. This exploration would lead to the intriguing notion that time, rather than being an endless continuum, could be seen as precious, a limited resource to be cherished and utilized.
The eternal being’s journey of imagination doesn’t stop there. It then considers the concept of life itself as something precious. For a being that exists beyond the cycle of life and death, the idea of a finite life, with its beginnings and endings, would be a source of profound curiosity. The eternal being would marvel at the depth of experiences, emotions, and growth that could occur within the finite span of a human life.
This thought experiment offers a profound reflection on our own perceptions of existence. For us, the temporal beings, time and life are inherently precious because they are finite. We measure our lives in years, our days in hours, constantly aware of the inexorable march of time. But for an eternal being, this finitude is a novel concept, offering a fresh perspective on the value of life and the passage of time.
In contemplating this, we can gain a deeper appreciation for our own existence. Through the eyes of an eternal being, we see our lives as a rare and precious opportunity, a brief moment in the vast expanse of eternity where we have the chance to experience, learn, love, and grow.
In conclusion, the eternal being’s fascination with temporality is a whimsical yet profound exploration of existence. It reminds us of the unique beauty of our finite lives and encourages us to cherish every moment in this fleeting, yet incredibly rich, journey of life.
Summary
An eternal being’s thought experiment on finiteness offers a unique perspective on time and life. It contemplates dividing infinity into time, space, thoughts, and things, exploring life as finite and precious. This perspective highlights the value of our finite existence, encouraging appreciation for the uniqueness of temporal life.
Glossarium

- Finiteness: The quality of being limited or having an end, as opposed to the eternal being’s usual experience of infinity.
“To see a World in a Grain of Sand and a Heaven in a Wild Flower, Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand and Eternity in an hour.” – William Blake
In the boundless heart of eternity,
an eternal being ponders,
imagining a world of finitude,
a realm where time meanders.
In the division of the infinite,
time, space, thoughts, and things take shape,
a cosmic play of beginnings and ends,
a temporal tapestry, beautifully draped.
Through the eyes of infinity,
life’s fleeting dance is seen,
each moment a precious gem,
in the vast, eternal stream.
In this imagined world of limits,
the eternal being finds awe,
for in the transient nature of life,
lies beauty, pure and raw.
