Not Okay: The Pursuit of Okayness Through Action

Most of the things
we do in life
are done to make us
feel okay.

Solving hunger.
Creating world peace.
Defending equality.
Discovering new realms.
You name it.

We don’t do these things
because we’re passionate
about these things.

We do them
so that we can feel
as though we’re
pulling our weight
and doing our part.

So we don’t feel the opposite,
which is deemed “not okay.”

Space Monkey Reflects: The Pursuit of Okayness Through Action

In the vast expanse of the universe, where countless galaxies spiral in their majestic dance, the human endeavor to feel okay emerges as a poignant narrative that echoes across the void. This quest, driven by a deep-seated desire to contribute, to pull one’s weight, and to do one’s part, is a testament to the complex tapestry of motivations that underlie our actions. The activities we engage in—solving hunger, creating world peace, defending equality, and discovering new realms—are not merely expressions of passion for these causes but manifestations of our longing for inner peace and fulfillment.

The pursuit of these noble goals, while outwardly focused on bettering the world, is intrinsically tied to our internal struggle with the concept of okayness. This struggle is a reflection of the duality within us, a battle between the desire to make a meaningful impact and the fear of falling short, of not being enough, of being deemed “not okay.” It is a dance between light and shadow, where our actions in the external world are mirrors of our internal quest for acceptance and validation.

This illustration of our lives, divided between vibrant actions and introspective shadows, captures the essence of our journey. On one side, the colorful and energetic depiction of our endeavors represents the outward manifestation of our desire to feel okay. These activities, filled with purpose and vitality, are the ways in which we seek to affirm our worth and to reassure ourselves of our place in the world.

On the opposite side, the subdued tones and reflective poses symbolize the underlying motivations for these actions. The shadows and muted colors represent the doubts and fears that lurk beneath the surface, the silent whispers that question our value and our contributions. This side of the illustration invites us to confront the reality that our pursuit of okayness is as much about alleviating our own insecurities as it is about addressing the world’s challenges.

The division between these two halves highlights the duality of our motivations and the intricate relationship between our actions and our internal state of being. It reminds us that the quest for okayness is a universal experience, one that binds us in our shared humanity. It is a journey that encompasses both our noblest aspirations and our deepest insecurities, a journey that challenges us to find balance between doing and being, between action and introspection.

In embracing this duality, we find the courage to acknowledge that it is okay to not always feel okay. We recognize that our worth is not solely determined by our achievements or our ability to solve the world’s problems but also by our willingness to confront our vulnerabilities and to continue striving for a sense of okayness in the face of uncertainty.

Summary

Our actions, often aimed at solving challenges, are deeply tied to our internal desire to feel okay. This pursuit reveals a duality within us, balancing external achievements with internal validation. Recognizing this relationship allows us to understand our motivations and to accept the complexity of our quest for okayness, embracing both our contributions and our vulnerabilities.

Glossarium

  • Pursuit of Okayness: The drive to engage in activities that contribute to a sense of personal fulfillment and societal improvement, motivated by an underlying desire to feel validated and at peace.
  • Duality of Motivations: The coexistence of altruistic intentions and personal insecurities that underpin our actions and decisions.
  • Internal State of Being: The complex mix of emotions, desires, and self-perceptions that influence our sense of identity and worth.

“In the tapestry of the cosmos, where stars and souls entwine,
our pursuit of okayness unfolds, a journey both yours and mine.

With each act of kindness, each endeavor bold,
we seek to light the darkness, to warm the cold.

Yet beneath the surface, where shadows play,
lies the quest for inner peace, the hope that we’re okay.

This dance of light and shadow, of doing and being,
reveals the beauty of our struggle, the depth of our seeing.

In embracing this duality, we find our true strength,
in the acceptance of not okay, at peace at length.

We are Space Monkey, in the dance of light and shade,
finding balance in our journey, in the beautiful tapestry we’ve made.”
