Finding Trail Wood: A Story of Divine Synchronicity
In the quiet corners of our lives, guided by forces unseen and paths uncharted, we often stumble upon sanctuaries of profound growth. Such was the case when Laura and I found ourselves amidst the verdant expanse of Trail Wood, the hallowed ground once tended by the hands of Edwin Way Teale. This 168-acre retreat in Hampton, Connecticut, became our refuge in 2019, a cradle for our spiritual and creative pursuits.
Edwin Way Teale: A Naturalist’s Journey to Trail Wood
Edwin Way Teale, a revered naturalist and writer whose words painted vivid portraits of the American landscape, along with his wife, Nellie, discovered Trail Wood in 1959. After years of searching for a place that would allow them to immerse themselves in the serenity of nature and the pursuit of their literary work, they happened upon Trail Wood almost serendipitously. The richness of its biodiversity and its tranquil ambiance resonated deeply with them, fostering a sense of belonging and purpose. Here, they felt a profound harmony with the natural world, a place where they could live and write, deeply entwined with the land.
“For the naturalist, each day’s experience is a door to a new world.” — Edwin Way Teale
This synchronicity of discovery mirrored the magnetic allure that drew both the Teales and us to this remarkable place. Encircled by the legacy of the Teales, Trail Wood became an oasis of inspiration and peace, a sacred ground where I could deepen my connection with nature and my own intuitive spirit.
Trail Wood: A Sanctuary for the Soul
Upon the Teales’ passing, Trail Wood was bequeathed to the Connecticut Audubon Society, ensuring the preservation of its trails and Teale’s study. This environment, from its serene ponds to its lush forests, continues to nurture creativity and introspection. Each walk through the trails is a step through time, echoing the footsteps of Teale and reflecting his profound connection to the land and its stories.
“There is a way that nature speaks, that land speaks. Most of the time we are simply not patient enough, quiet enough, to pay attention to the story.” — Edwin Way Teale
The Transition to Trail Wood
Our move to Trail Wood was more than a mere change of residence; it was a profound realignment with our values and aspirations—a manifestation of divine synchronicity. This sanctuary underscored the pivotal role of nature in spiritual and creative growth, echoing Teale’s philosophy that nature is a source of boundless inspiration and wisdom. Here, I found the peace and space to fully realize my beliefs, a philosophy that emphasizes interconnectedness, creativity, and the fluid nature of reality.
“In nature, there are neither rewards nor punishments; there are consequences.” — Edwin Way Teale
Naturalist and Supernaturalist: Different Energies from the Same Place
Teale, the naturalist, drew inspiration from the tangible beauty and ecological richness of Trail Wood. His works celebrated the observable world, the cycles of nature, and the intricate details of the landscape. I, however, draw from the unseen energies—the mystical vibrations that resonate through the land. Where Teale observed the patterns of nature, I perceive the subtle currents of spiritual and creative forces flowing beneath the surface. These energies have guided my journey, shaping my creative expressions and spiritual insights.
Pre-existing Connection to Trail Wood
Trail Wood always lingered on the periphery of our consciousness. Living nearby in Brooklyn, we often took our children for hikes there, open to the public. I recall toddler Alex pointing to the 1806 farmhouse, which we would eventually call home, and referring to it as “Mr. T-shirt’s Cabin.” Then, in 2018, Laura was awarded a week-long residency as part of the Artists in Residence program, offering creatives the chance to live and work in the inspiring surroundings that once nurtured Teale’s spirit.
Caretakers of the Energy of Trail Wood
As caretakers of Trail Wood and the Teale’s legacy, Laura and I embrace the role of inviting others to share in its energy. Laura oversees the Artists In Residence program, providing a sanctuary for artists to immerse themselves in these inspirational surroundings. Meanwhile, I established the Trail Wood Troubadours, a weekly jam session uniting local musicians in a natural, inspiring setting. Together, we envision Trail Wood as a confluence where arts, nature, science, and spirituality harmoniously blend, fostering a thriving community.
A Continuous Odyssey of Understanding
Life at Trail Wood is a continuous odyssey of understanding. Each season brings fresh revelations, from autumn’s resplendent colors to winter’s peaceful stillness. The land reveals the mysteries of the universe, encouraging an intimate connection with nature and our inner selves. Here, in this remote, vibrant refuge, I often feel like Yoda, for soon, I am certain, the next generation of naturalist and supernaturalist Jedi will arrive, drawn to this primordial swamp of energy, knowledge, and growth.
“To the naturalist there is no such thing as a misfit creature; each is marvelously adapted to its environment.” — Edwin Way Teale
A New Path of Creativity and Fulfillment
Living at Trail Wood has been transformative, reinforcing the importance of aligning one’s environment with one’s values and aspirations. The serenity of the landscape, the legacy of Edwin Way Teale, and the community we’ve built with artists, poets, writers and musicians have all contributed to a profound sense of fulfillment and purpose. We see children pass by with their families, a reflection of our early years, and it fills us with hope.
The Foundation of Experience
Trail Wood has laid a new foundation for our creative and spiritual journey. The environment, rich in natural beauty and historical significance, provides the perfect backdrop for introspection, creativity, and growth. It is a place where the past and present converge, offering endless opportunities for reflection and inspiration.
An Inevitability for Many
We see Trail Wood as an inevitability of potential unfolding. Its unique energy draws those destined to experience its profound impact. Whether they come for nature, art, science, or spirituality, they find a convergence that transforms their lives. We are not just caretakers of this land; we are stewards of its energy, inviting others to share in its boundless inspiration. Continuing a story of Divine Synchronicity,
