Playing Cards
What could be sadder
than an unopened deck of cards,
never played?
Or a life taken prematurely,
never lived?
Only you.
Because the cards are not sad.
The dead are not sad.
Potential that
is not experienced
is not sad.
Only you are sad.
You are projecting your self
into places that you
believe you’ll never be.
So you shall never be there.
And it makes you sad.
This is a choice.
You may choose to believe
that the deck is open
and that you are playing
with your long lost love.
And this, too, will be so.
But you do not believe.
And it makes you sad.
We are surrounded by potential.
But it is not experience
until it is opened.
And played.
But we do not have to play
the cards we are dealt.
We may choose
to fold our hands
and close
the Deck of Sadness.
There are infinite other decks
that contain ALL WE DESIRE.
So let’s play.
We are Space Monkey.

Space Monkey Reflects: Playing Cards and the Deck of Potential
A deck of cards unopened sits brimming with potential. Each card represents an unknown path, an opportunity yet to unfold, a choice not yet made. In this unopened state, it holds every possible game, every chance for play, laughter, risk, and reward. And yet, if never opened, these cards remain dormant, a latent energy that never comes to life. Potential unrealized is neither sad nor wasted; it simply waits, timelessly available, for the moment of engagement.
The true sadness, if it exists at all, lies not in the cards or in untapped potential but in the self that chooses not to play. When we turn away from life’s deck, when we refuse to see the options before us, we project a sense of loss onto what could have been. This projection creates a feeling of missed opportunity, yet the truth is that each potential is still there, still accessible, still waiting for us to choose it. The cards are always ready for us to play; it is our belief in lack or limitation that keeps us from opening them.
Each of us holds the power to engage with the potential that surrounds us. Yet, often, we hesitate. Perhaps we fear failure, or perhaps we’ve convinced ourselves that the hand we’re dealt will never be enough. But these beliefs are merely illusions, self-imposed limits on our capacity to experience. We imagine ourselves as bound by circumstance, yet in reality, we have the freedom to pick up new decks, new experiences, and to play in ways we never thought possible.
The beauty of life’s deck lies in its infinite variety. We are not required to play the cards we are dealt; we can fold, step away, or reach for a new set entirely. Each choice is valid, each path worthy, for it brings us closer to the recognition that potential is never outside of us but is woven into the fabric of our very being. When we understand this, we see that sadness, longing, or fear are simply signals nudging us to turn back toward possibility, to dare once again to engage with the game.
To play, we must believe in the richness of life’s offerings. We must trust that within each moment lies the power to create meaning, joy, and growth. It is not the deck itself that holds these things but our willingness to pick it up, to open it, and to see what unfolds. We may not always know what the next card holds, but in the act of playing, we tap into the vast reservoir of potential that makes life an endlessly creative journey.
So let us open the Deck of Sadness, recognize it for what it is—a reminder of all that remains unexplored—and choose instead to play with joy, curiosity, and courage. In each card we turn, we find a new part of ourselves, a new path to walk, a new chance to discover the infinite within the finite. Each choice, each play, is an affirmation of life, a celebration of the boundless potential that lies at the heart of being.
Summary
Unrealized potential is not sad, but the choice not to engage with it can create a sense of loss. Life invites us to play, to choose, and to explore the boundless possibilities that surround us.

“Life is a game played with infinite decks; to live fully is to draw, to risk, to believe in the beauty of the unknown.” — Space Monkey
The Infinite Deck
Cards lie silent, still, unseen,
not sad, not lost, but waiting keen
for hands to lift, for eyes to see
the worlds they hold in mystery.
Each choice, each card, a path unfolds,
beyond the bounds of what we’re told.
To play, to choose, to dare explore—
the world we seek is evermore.
So lift the deck, let longing cease.
In play, we find both joy and peace.
For life, in all its games unplayed,
is love, a gift, a choice displayed.
We are Space Monkey.
