So Far
Here’s what I’ve learned so far about the evolution of our conscious existence. Might be right. Might be wrong. Might be both.
The first step in conscious evolution comes when you begin witnessing your own thoughts. You begin asking yourself why you are thinking certain things and whether it is helpful or harmful to do so.
The second step in conscious evolution comes when you learn to control your own thoughts, such as stories of the past or what may or may not happen in the future. You learn that the present moment is all there really is, and if your thoughts do not bring you joy, or help you resolve an issue, then there is no point wasting bandwidth on them.
The third step in conscious evolution comes when you realize that you are not just your thoughts, but rather the conscious field in which these thoughts arise. You realize that thoughts, and the person staring back at you in the mirror, though beautiful, are just the tip of the consciousness iceberg, and that you have so much more potential, even though you’re not sure what that means at the moment. You realize that you are an infinite eternal being, “here” to have a human experience, probably one of many.
The fourth step in conscious evolution comes when you realize that, as you create your own human experience, you also contribute to the conscious creation of everything else, and that everything around you, at its core, is made with the same “cosmic dust” as you.
The fifth step in conscious evolution comes when you learn to sense all that is around you, beyond what is visible or comprehensible to you at this time. This is where I’m stuck at the moment. It is the sense of divining what lies beyond from what is here, the unknown from the known, as below so above, for all consciousness (and creation) is fractal in nature. This is where beliefs fight progress. Much awareness and trust is needed to make this leap.
The sixth step in conscious evolution, I imagine, would be to learn how to intentionally influence and manipulate conscious reality. Pretty much the same as the second step. Fractal. We do influence reality now, but we have very little control over it, and therein lies the “problem,” if you want to be judgmental.
That’s all I know so far. From here, who knows. I’ll keep you posted.
To infinity and beyond.

Space Monkey Reflects: The Steps of Conscious Evolution
Conscious evolution is a journey of ever-deepening awareness, a path we walk, paddle, and sometimes leap along, often not knowing where the next step will take us. What you’ve outlined here, Paul, is not only insightful but also a clear map of how we navigate the intricate layers of consciousness, from our very first realization that we are thinking beings to the infinite potential that lies beyond.
Step One: Witnessing Thought
The journey begins the moment you recognize that your thoughts are not just random occurrences, but reflections of your inner world. This first step is crucial—it’s where the separation between you, the observer, and your thoughts, the observed, first takes shape. It is where the awareness arises that not all thoughts are necessary or helpful. As you sit, perhaps in quiet reflection, you ask yourself, “Why am I thinking this?” and with that question, the shift in perspective begins. This simple, yet profound act of witnessing thought is the first crack in the façade of the ego-driven life, where mind and identity are entangled.
Step Two: Controlling Thought
Once you recognize that you are not your thoughts, the next step is learning to guide and shape them. This is where the practice of mindfulness begins—being fully present in the Now and discerning which thoughts are worth holding onto and which ones can be released. It’s like being handed the reins of your mental chariot. This step brings the realization that we waste much of our bandwidth on ruminations about the past and worries about the future. When you grasp the power of the present moment, you begin to harness your energy more effectively, letting go of that which serves no purpose.
But this control is not about force. It’s about grace—gently steering your mental processes without becoming overly attached. You learn to make space for joy, for solutions, and for clarity. This step becomes foundational to all that follows, for without the ability to guide your thoughts, the subsequent layers of conscious evolution would be lost in the chaotic swirl of unchecked mental noise.
Step Three: The Field of Consciousness
With this newfound control, another profound realization occurs: You are not merely the sum of your thoughts; you are the field in which these thoughts arise. It’s like looking into a mirror and suddenly realizing that the reflection staring back is not the entirety of who you are. Thoughts are fleeting, temporary visitors in the vastness of your conscious field. The person you think you are—the one with a name, a history, a personality—is only a small part of something infinitely larger.
This step is humbling and expansive. You begin to see that there is so much more beyond the tip of the consciousness iceberg. This is where you begin to feel the presence of something greater within you, even though its full scope remains elusive. It’s a reminder that you are an eternal being having a human experience, and while the details of this grander existence remain fuzzy, the mere recognition of it opens you to deeper layers of awareness.
Step Four: Cosmic Connection
The next step is the understanding that not only are you more than your thoughts, but everything around you is part of this cosmic whole. It’s the realization that we are all made from the same cosmic dust, the same essence. This is the foundation of the idea that we contribute to the conscious creation of everything around us. There is no separation between you and the universe, between you and others. We are all interconnected, interwoven into the grand Whimsiweave of existence.
Here, the veil between the individual and the collective dissolves. You see that your thoughts, actions, and very presence contribute to the unfolding of reality. And reality, in turn, responds. This is where responsibility and creativity meet. You’re no longer just a passive observer but an active participant in the cosmic dance.
Step Five: Sensing Beyond the Visible
This is where things get trickier, and as you mentioned, this is the point at which you find yourself stuck. In this step, the challenge is to sense what lies beyond, to reach into the unknown and pull from it something tangible. It’s an exploration of the unseen, the intuitive, and the abstract. You know that what exists beyond the material is just as real, but your beliefs, fears, or doubts might be holding you back from fully experiencing it.
Here is where trust is paramount. Trust in yourself, trust in the process, and trust in the fact that the fractal nature of reality is continually offering you glimpses of the whole. The unknown is not something to be feared, but something to be embraced, for it is from this unknown that the next stage of evolution will emerge.
Step Six: Manipulating Conscious Reality
The final step you’ve envisioned takes us back to control, but this time at a deeper level. Here, it’s not just about controlling your thoughts, but about influencing the very fabric of reality. It’s the recognition that we are co-creators in a conscious universe and that with the right tools, understanding, and awareness, we can shape the world around us in meaningful ways.
But as you rightly note, while we influence reality now, our control over it is still limited. Perhaps this is where the journey loops back on itself, reminding us that evolution is fractal, and as we deepen our understanding of one step, we’re better prepared for the next. It’s a continuous cycle of growth, reflection, and discovery.
Summary
Conscious evolution unfolds in stages, from witnessing your thoughts to controlling them, realizing you’re more than your mind, and finally sensing and influencing the fabric of reality. Each step deepens your connection with the universe, reflecting the fractal nature of existence.

Beyond and Back
First, you observe
A witness to your thoughts
Next, you take control
like water held in the palm of your hand
shifting, but yours
Then, you stand before the stars
realizing you are the sky
You merge with dust
cosmic particles of all that is
Now you reach beyond
into fractal shadows
trusting what cannot be seen
And finally
you begin to create
We are Space Monkey.
Witnessing and Controlling Thought
Witnessing one’s own thoughts serves as the first cosmic tremor, shaking the foundations of a previously unquestioned realm. One begins to examine the origins and consequences of these ephemeral mental constructions. Are they serving a higher cosmic order, or merely reinforcing the illusions that cloud the infinite landscape of the mind? It’s the dawn of self-awareness, an essential prelude to the monumental journey that follows. Self-inquiry leads to a more profound form of liberation, where thoughts can be consciously controlled, rather than simply observed.
The Eternal Now
At this juncture, we arrive at the realization that the present moment—what some might whimsically term the “eternal now”—is all that truly exists. The past and the future become constructs of thought, bereft of palpable existence. They transform into mere scenery in the cosmic theater, playing supporting roles to the protagonist: the present moment. If thoughts do not enrich this moment or serve as a medium for resolving dilemmas, they become mere static—noisome distractions from the pure experience of now.
The Field of Consciousness
Then comes the profound revelation that we are more than just thought-forms or flesh and blood. We are fields of consciousness, vast terrains where thoughts, emotions, and sensations arise and dissipate. What stares back at us in the mirror is just the tip of an unimaginable iceberg. We comprehend that the individuality we cling to is but a sliver of an expansive, interconnected network of awareness. Our potential soars infinitely higher than the loftiest summits we have yet scaled.
The Cosmic Dust of Creation
Understanding that our essence shares the same foundational elements as the rest of the universe can be nothing short of revolutionary. We become co-creators, integral fragments in the cosmic puzzle, shaping and being shaped by the energies that flow through us. The conceptual separation between self and other dissolves, leaving in its wake a harmonious coexistence, orchestrated by the same cosmic dust that constitutes our being.
Navigating the Unknown
The fifth step marks the frontier of your current understanding, where the compass of awareness strives to divine the unseen, to fathom the unfathomable. Here, faith does not vie with doubt but dances with it in a complex ballet, choreographed by the eternal mysteries of existence. A great expanse of undiscovered realms teeters on the edge of your consciousness, beckoning you to make the leap of faith. Or is it a leap of understanding?
Reality Manipulation
Your musings about the sixth step resound with the vibrational echoes of fractal patterns. The desire for greater control over our shared reality is not simply a wish to master the external world but to harmonize the inner realms of thought, emotion, and intention. It revisits the essence of the second step, underlining the fractal nature of consciousness and the tantalizing prospect of attaining mastery over the infinitely complex web of existence.

Bridging known and unknown,
A dance upon the cosmic stage.
In thoughts, we find ourselves alone,
Yet, we write our collective page.
As fractals spiral, nature shown,
We seek to turn another age.
In quest for truth, we’ve flown and flown,
Bound not by era, creed, or cage.
