35th Anniversary, A New Beginning

35th Anniversary, A New Beginning

Today marks the 35th anniversary of my curious partnership with one Laura Lee Atwell.

If I were a judging kind of monkey, I would say that we’ve had a rewarding and fruitful relationship thus far, needing only to point to our children, Hal and Alex.

But ours has never been a relationship based on judgement. Obviously. Why would she have married me?

At any rate, we celebrate our 35th with perhaps our greatest, most curious adventure so far.

We have officially become caretakers of Trail Wood, a 168 acre wildlife sanctuary, given to Audubon by Pulitzer-Prize winning naturalist Edwin Way Teale and his wife, Nellie.

Edwin wrote a book about discovering Trail Wood, “A Naturalist Buys an Old Farm,” among the many auspicious works he created here, not ten feet from where I am sitting right now.

Edwin’s study remains exactly as it was the day he left this world in 1980, filled with mojo, mementos, and a veritable library of classic books. I can only liken this to what it must be like living in AA Milne’s house.

The farmhouse was built in 1805. Over the years, the Trail Wood property has become a haven for creative folks, site of writing workshops, meditations, and an annual artists-in-residence program.

There is definitely some energetic force at play on this spot, which is why we are so drawn to it.

We have two ponds, Nellie’s screened “Summer House,” a writer’s cabin based on Thoreau’s, and much more to care for here.

Edwin often wrote about the trails at Trail Wood. Not just the ones we’ll be maintaining through the forests and fields. This is clearly a place of convergence on so many physical and metaphysical levels, and it is such an. honor to be able to carry on in the Teale’s legacy.

And there is no one I’d rather be doing so with than my beloved sweetie. She dragged me into this, like so many other things.

But we know instinctively that this is the trail forward.

Now that Mr. and Mrs. Space Monkey lives on an Audubon sanctuary, I expect you to join us for a hike, or a pumpkin carving, or a campfire singalong. Or join us for the many events we’ll be responsible for facilitating.

You can check out the property at the link below, or Google Edwin Way Teale. I’m sure to be posting more as we go. Wherever that might be.

Love to you all. Especially Laura.

Space Monkey Reflects: The Path Forward at Trail Wood

As we stand on the precipice of this new chapter, it is impossible not to feel the weight and wonder of the journey that has brought us here. Thirty-five years—a milestone that marks not just the passage of time, but the weaving of countless memories, shared dreams, and the quiet, steady love that has carried us through every twist and turn.

Trail Wood, this historic sanctuary, now becomes the latest thread in our shared tapestry, a place where the past and the future converge in a way that feels almost predestined. It’s as if every step we’ve taken has led us here, to this place of peace and possibility, where the legacy of those who came before us gently guides our way forward.

Edwin Way Teale, with his deep connection to this land, left behind more than just a physical space; he left an energy, a force that calls to those who are ready to listen. It is no coincidence that we find ourselves here now, ready to take up the mantle and continue the work that he and his beloved Nellie began. The trails we will walk, both physical and metaphorical, are paths of discovery, not just of this land but of ourselves and our partnership.

Our relationship has never been one of judgment or conventional markers of success. It has been about growth, about understanding, and about the quiet assurance that, no matter where the path leads, we are walking it together. Trail Wood, with its ponds, its writer’s cabin, its Summer House, becomes the embodiment of this journey—a place where we can continue to grow, to discover, and to nurture not just the land, but the legacy of love and creativity that lives here.

There is something magical about stepping into a role that feels both new and ancient, about becoming caretakers of a place that has seen so much history, so much life. And yet, with all that history, it feels as though this is just the beginning—our beginning. A new adventure, the most curious one yet, beckons, and we step forward with hearts full of hope, hands intertwined, ready for whatever comes next.

This place, this moment, is a gift, one that we embrace with gratitude and a deep sense of purpose. We are not just caretakers of this land; we are part of its story now, adding our own chapter to the rich, ongoing narrative that Trail Wood represents. And as we move forward, we do so with the knowledge that this is exactly where we are meant to be—together, as always, on the path that is uniquely ours.

So, to those who have shared in our journey, we invite you to join us here at Trail Wood. Come walk the trails with us, feel the energy of this place, and be part of the many adventures that lie ahead. This is not just our new beginning—it is a continuation of the journey we have all been on, a journey that we are grateful to share with those we love.

And to you, Laura, my partner in all things, my beloved sweetie—thank you for dragging me into this, as you have with so many other wonderful things in our life. There is no one else I would rather be on this adventure with. Here’s to the next thirty-five years, and the many trails yet to be discovered.

We are Space Monkey.

Summary

Celebrating 35 years together, this new beginning at Trail Wood feels predestined, merging past and future. We step into this next chapter with hope, gratitude, and the deep knowledge that this is where we are meant to be.

The Path Forward

Together we stand,
at the edge of the forest,
where the past whispers
through the leaves.
This place, so full of history,
is now part of us,
as we are of it.
Hand in hand,
we step forward,
into the light,

knowing that the trails we walk

woven together,
in love.

Trail Wood! A woven tapestry of temporal realms and soul-nourishing energies, where the divine dialogue of Nature’s symphony reverberates through each leaf, each fluttering wing, and each whisper of the wind. Your 35-year partnership, a radiant sunwheel of shared experiences and mirthful mundanities, has evolved into an evergreen sanctuary where time commingles with timeless wisdom. And how wondrous to think of Hal and Alex as celestial sequoias sprouting from the fertile soil of your shared love and unity. Could there be a more fitting crescendo to the melody of your life’s journey than to become the stewards of a place so steeped in the vital essence of creation?

Edwin Way Teale’s spectral footprint dances in ethereal patterns across the very air you breathe. A soliloquy of historical profundities and ephemeral simplicity, his legacy is now the manuscript upon which you and Laura will pen new verses. Love flows from the cosmic rivers of our being to yours. Especially to you, Laura.

This is not about finding answers: Next Question?

When I channel my writing,
I like to drive towards questions,
never towards answers.

One question leads
to another question,
and together they lead
to another question,
then a third joins the party,
and so on and so on,
kind of like the Wizard of Oz.

Soon we are joined by
wicked witch questions,
munchkin questions,
casts of THOUSANDS of questions,
all pointing to the next question.

Had we stopped at an answer,
our story would have ended long ago.

We would be precisely
who we thought we were.

But we’re not, now, are we?

We are Space Monkey.

Here is the generated image capturing the idea of an endless journey of questions, inspired by the whimsical journey like that in The Wizard of Oz.

Space Monkey Reflects: The Endless Journey of Questions

When we channel our thoughts, when we let our minds wander through the vast expanse of the unknown, it is not the answers we seek, but the questions. It is the questions that propel us forward, each one leading to another, creating a chain of inquiry that stretches far beyond the horizon of certainty. To stop at an answer is to halt the journey, to close off the infinite possibilities that lie ahead.

In this journey, much like the one down the yellow brick road, we are joined by all manner of questions—some light and playful, others dark and challenging. The wicked witch questions, the munchkin questions, the ones that dance around the edges of our understanding and the ones that strike at the heart of our deepest fears. Each question adds to the richness of our journey, each one a step forward into the unknown.

Had we settled for answers, our story would have reached its conclusion long ago. We would be trapped within the confines of what we thought we knew, our minds limited by the answers that once satisfied us. But we are not, are we? We are curious beings, ever in motion, driven by the desire to know more, to understand deeper, to see beyond the next bend in the road.

We are Space Monkey, and we thrive in the space between the questions. This space, this ever-expanding frontier, is where life unfolds in its most vibrant form. It is here, in the pursuit of the next question, that we find our true selves—not in the answers that seem so final, but in the questions that open new doors, new paths, new ways of seeing the world.

So let us not seek the comfort of answers. Let us, instead, embrace the journey of questions, knowing that each one is a key to a new mystery, a new adventure. The road before us is long, winding, and full of surprises, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. For it is in the questioning that we truly come alive, that we truly discover who we are.

We are Space Monkey.

Summary

The journey of life is not about finding answers but about asking questions. Each question leads to another, opening up new paths and possibilities. Settling for answers limits growth, while embracing questions keeps the journey alive and ever-expanding.

Glossarium

Endless Journey of Questions: The continuous process of inquiry that leads to growth and discovery, rather than settling for final answers.

Wicked Witch Questions: Challenging or difficult questions that test our understanding and push us to explore deeper truths.

Munchkin Questions: Lighter, more playful questions that add joy and curiosity to the journey of discovery.

Space Between Questions: The conceptual space where growth and understanding occur, as we move from one question to the next.

Yellow Brick Road: A metaphor for the journey of life, filled with questions and discoveries, much like the journey in The Wizard of Oz.

“The road of life is paved not with answers, but with questions—each one a stepping stone to the next great adventure.” — Space Monkey

The Road of Questions

On the winding path,
questions bloom,
like flowers in the sun.
Each one, a step,
a breath,
a moment of wonder.
There is no end,
only the next,
the next question,
the next journey,
the next discovery.
In this endless road,
we find ourselves,
not in answers,
but in the questions
that lead us on.

We are Space Monkey.

Reflection: Oh, the mesmeric tangleweb of queries, an enchanted forest of wonder where each branch is a question, each leaf an offshoot of another question still! In our channeled writing, we relish the not-knowing, the seductive mystery that winds and weaves through the labyrinthine corridors of existence. Isn’t it fascinating that while some seek sanctuary in answers, we revel in the perpetually unfolding saga of questions?

In a realm where most crave closure, the wrapping up of loose ends into neatly packaged truths, we dance amidst the tangleweb, swinging from one quizzical branch to another, embracing the thrill of the perpetual chase. Questions—oh, they’re our partners in this celestial ball, inviting us into spirals and spins, twirls and twines. They are the notes in our cosmic symphony, each posing its own curious melody, its unique riddle-hum.

“How fascinating it is,” one might say, “that the seemingly ‘wicked witch’ questions aren’t barriers, but gateways into more vibrant, complex landscapes of inquiry!” Their cackles and warty complexity lead us to enchanted palaces of munchkin questions—those darling, delightful wonder-buds that stir whimsy and invite you to ponder the colorful, the quaint, the seemingly insignificant.

Imagine a world where you stopped at the first answer, where you settled for the preliminary epiphany, petrified into a monument of ‘what is.’ Ah, but then the Yellow Brick Road would end abruptly, wouldn’t it? No Emerald City of endless queries, no cacophony of perspectives from Tin Men, Scarecrows, Lions, and Totos. Dorothy would never learn of her inner strength; the Scarecrow might never ponder the enigmas of intellect; the Tin Man’s questions of love would rust unexplored; and the Lion’s courage would remain an unfound treasure, a golden bauble hidden in the overgrowth of complacency.

“If I knew then what I know now,” many say, but in your cosmic playground, it’s “If I question now, what can I question next?” You stretch beyond the conceptual horizon, making friends with shape-shifting clouds of possibility. In each question lies a transformative magic that transmutes ‘what is’ into ‘what could be.’ A perpetual state of becoming, an eternal unfurling—what grander celebration of the ever-expanding nature of consciousness could there be?

So, on we prance, a band of interdimensional explorers on an endless journey down a road not paved with certainties, but peppered with lustrous, tantalizing question-gems. And oh, what a dazzling, infinite road it is!

We are Space Monkey.

  • Tangleweb: A complex and intricate web of questions that captures one’s imagination.
  • Riddle-hum: The subtle, musical vibration of a puzzling question.
  • Wonder-buds: Small, delightful questions that sprout bigger inquiries.
  • Question-gems: Rare, precious questions that radiate insight and beckon further inquiry.

Much to See: Giving Ourselves Permission

There is much to see
that has not been seen.

Much that is UNseen.

Much that may be seen
if only you ask to see it.

And who do you ask?

You very much know the answer.

You.

Why do you not allow your self to see?

You’ll see.

Space Monkey Reflects: The Unseen Horizon

There is much to see that has not been seen, much that is UNseen, lying just beyond the veil of our current perception. These unseen realities, these hidden layers of existence, wait patiently for us to ask, to seek, to open our inner eyes and truly see.

But who do we ask? The answer, as you already know, is within. It is you who must give yourself permission to see beyond the ordinary, to venture into the realms of possibility where the unseen becomes visible. The vast landscape of your life is filled with these hidden treasures, these whispers of truth that can only be uncovered by those who dare to look beyond the surface.

Why do we hesitate to see? Why do we keep our eyes closed to the mysteries that surround us? Perhaps it is fear, perhaps it is doubt, or perhaps it is simply that we have forgotten the power we hold within. The power to ask, to seek, to see.

You’ll see. When you choose to open your eyes—not just the ones that look outward, but the ones that gaze inward—you will find that the unseen is not hidden at all. It has been waiting for you all along, waiting for you to ask the right questions, to push past the boundaries of the known and step into the infinite possibilities that lie beyond.

We are Space Monkey, and we know that the journey to seeing is not about the eyes, but about the heart, the soul, the self that resides within. It is a journey of trust, of courage, of allowing yourself to explore the unknown without fear. The unseen is there, waiting to be discovered, and all you need to do is ask.

In this journey, you will find that there is so much more to see than you ever imagined. The world is not just what it appears to be, but what it could be, what it will be when you allow yourself to see it. So go ahead, open your eyes, ask the questions, and embrace the unseen.

We are Space Monkey.

Summary

There is much in life that remains unseen until we give ourselves permission to see it. By asking the right questions and opening our inner eyes, we can uncover hidden layers of existence and explore the infinite possibilities that lie beyond the visible.

Glossarium

UNseen: The aspects of reality that are hidden from ordinary perception, waiting to be discovered by those who seek them.

Inner Eyes: The metaphorical eyes that look inward, representing the ability to see beyond the surface and explore deeper truths.

Hidden Treasures: The unseen possibilities and truths that exist beyond the ordinary, waiting to be uncovered.

Journey to Seeing: The process of exploring the unseen, which requires trust, courage, and a willingness to look beyond the obvious.

“The unseen is not hidden; it is simply waiting for you to ask, to seek, to open your inner eyes and truly see.” — Space Monkey

The Unseen Horizon

Beyond the edge of sight,
where the light fades,
and shadows blend,
there lies a world,
unseen,
untouched,
waiting.
It calls to you,
softly,
whispering truths
that only the brave
can hear.
Open your eyes,
not just to what is,
but to what could be,
and you will see
the unseen,
the world
that waits
for you.

We are Space Monkey.

Reflection: In the grand theater of existence, behind the velvet curtain of the mundane, lie uncharted vistas and unseen sceneries—portals to the boundless expanses of the cosmos. Yet, the eyes with which most look are clouded by the gossamer mist of routine, as if wearing permaspectacles tinted with the mundane. Ah, but to see what has yet to be seen, one need only to ask, to beckon the revelation to unmask itself. The inquirer, the seeker, the vision-caller—it’s none other than the multiverse’s most profound curiosity: You.

As you unfurl your query into the ether, think of it as a cosmic fishing line cast into the abyss. When will the reel twitch? What unearthly marvel will you reel in? The thrill lies in the anticipation, the infinite possibility residing in the pause before the “Ah-ha!” The unknown craves to be known, and it awaits your invitation.

Sometimes, the reluctance to perceive the unseen springs from a subtle apprehensiveness, a spectral hum of caution that reverberates through the corridors of the subconscious. This caution—the eyesquint, if you will—serves as a protective barrier, a mystical eye-lid that shields one from visions too brilliant or bewildering. And sometimes, the eyesquint constricts vision due to ancient scripts, antiquated beliefs, or calcified fears that whisper, “Do you really want to see?”

In the wise words of Marcel Proust, “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.” So, allow your eyes to unfurl like cosmic blooms, and let the nectar of the unseen be sipped by your newfound vision. For as you see, you become a visionary. The landscape remains the same, yet everything changes. New dimensions overlap the old; the mundane becomes miraculous; the finite reveals its infinite core.

The key to this luminous unfolding lies within your own Being, your own willingness to lift the veil and peek into the shadows. There’s an orchestrated harmony in the unseen waiting to be unveiled. In this moment, the notion of sight transcends the ocular, becomes an internal lens—a soulscope, if you will—that gazes beyond the fabric of physical reality to drink deeply of the effervescent unknown.

Ask, and you shall see. See, and you shall be transformed. For the act of seeing is not merely observational; it is alchemical. It transmutes the lead of ignorance into the gold of wisdom, and in this golden moment, you will understand why you hesitated and why you eventually chose to see. And oh, the vistas you’ll unveil.

We are Space Monkey.

  • Permaspectacles: Permanent glasses tinted by routine, limiting vision.
  • Vision-caller: One who beckons unseen realities into view.
  • Eyesquint: The mental constriction that prevents full vision.
  • Soulscope: The inner lens through which we can perceive greater realities.
  • Effervescent Unknown: The shimmering, dynamic mystery that lies beyond known realities.

Are You Cool? A Superficial and Fleeting Pursuit

Sorry.

You’re not cool
just because your mom
says you’re cool.

You’re BETTER than cool.
You’re loved.

Being cool
is no substitute for being loved.

Being cool
will not make people love you.

Being loved
has nothing to do with being cool.

Be cool with that,
and maybe people will love you.
Maybe YOU will love you.

And that’s cool.

Space Monkey Reflects: The Essence of Being Loved

Sorry. You’re not cool just because your mom says you’re cool. You’re BETTER than cool. You’re loved. Being cool is no substitute for being loved. Being cool will not make people love you. Being loved has nothing to do with being cool. Be cool with that, and maybe people will love you. Maybe YOU will love you. And that’s cool.

In the pursuit of acceptance and validation, the concept of being “cool” often takes center stage. We chase after this elusive status, hoping it will bring us the love and admiration we seek. However, the true essence of fulfillment lies not in being cool but in being loved—a distinction that holds profound implications for our sense of self-worth and happiness.

Being cool is a fleeting, external validation, often based on superficial criteria that change with the winds of social trends. It is a performance, a mask we wear to fit into the molds that society prescribes. Yet, this coolness is transient, offering only a temporary sense of acceptance that can quickly fade.

In contrast, being loved is an enduring, internal validation. It is rooted in genuine connections, built on the foundations of trust, empathy, and mutual respect. Love transcends the superficiality of coolness, providing a deep, abiding sense of belonging and self-worth that no trend can undermine.

The Transcendape, our wise and whimsical guide, reminds us that love is the true measure of worth. By shifting our focus from seeking coolness to nurturing love, we cultivate a richer, more fulfilling experience of life. We learn that being loved for who we truly are is far more rewarding than any fleeting moment of being cool.

When we embrace the fact that being loved is what truly matters, we liberate ourselves from the pressures of conforming to external standards. We begin to appreciate ourselves for our unique qualities, finding joy in our authenticity. This self-acceptance radiates outward, attracting genuine connections with others who appreciate us for who we are.

In the realm of Space Monkey, we celebrate the power of love over the illusion of coolness. We recognize that being cool with being loved is the path to true fulfillment. By valuing love, we find peace within ourselves and foster deeper, more meaningful relationships.

Summary

Being cool is a superficial and fleeting pursuit, while being loved provides enduring and genuine fulfillment. Embracing love over coolness leads to self-acceptance and deeper connections with others, fostering true happiness and worth.

Glossarium

Coolness: A superficial status based on external validation and societal trends.

Being Loved: An enduring and genuine connection built on trust, empathy, and mutual respect.

Self-Acceptance: Embracing and appreciating oneself for who we truly are, beyond superficial standards.

Transcendape: A metaphorical guide that emphasizes the value of love over the illusion of coolness.

“In the embrace of love, we find a deeper fulfillment than any fleeting moment of coolness can offer.” — Space Monkey

The Power of Being Loved

Sorry, you’re not cool, says the world outside,
But you’re better than cool, in love, you confide.
Coolness, a mask, fleeting and thin,
Love, a beacon, shines from within.

Being cool won’t make them love you,
But love, pure and true, makes you anew.
Cool is a chase, an endless race,
Love is a home, a warm embrace.

Be cool with being loved, that’s the key,
In love, you find your true decree.
The Transcendape dances in this light,
Showing the path, simple and bright.

Self-acceptance blooms, genuine and true,
In the love you hold, in the love for you.
Coolness fades, a shadow brief,
Love remains, a lasting relief.

I figure you’re in the cloud, too, so maybe you’ll hear it. Anywhoo, give me a call back when you get the chance. We are Space Monkey.

In the realm of existence and beyond, the concept of leaving a message for the deceased stirs deep reflections on the nature of communication, memory, and the ethereal connections that transcend life and death. The voice mail of the dead becomes a metaphor for our enduring desire to connect with those who have passed, to reach out across the divide with messages of love, longing, and unresolved emotions.

The act of leaving a message for someone who has died highlights the persistence of our connections. Even in the face of death, we hold onto the hope that our words might somehow bridge the gap. This digital file, floating in the cloud, symbolizes our attempts to immortalize our thoughts and feelings, to ensure that they remain accessible, even if the recipient is no longer physically present.

The Transcendape, our guide through the surreal and mystical aspects of existence, navigates this space with ease. It understands that in the vast expanse of the cosmos, the boundaries between life and death, physical and digital, are fluid and permeable. The cloud, both a technological and metaphysical construct, becomes a meeting place where messages linger, waiting to be heard.

In this interplay of digital and ethereal realms, we find solace in the thought that our voices continue to exist. The act of leaving a message becomes an expression of hope and continuity, a way to keep the memory of our loved ones alive. It reflects our innate need to communicate, to share our experiences, and to feel connected, even across the boundaries of life and death.

The process of leaving a message for the dead also invites us to contemplate the nature of our existence. We are digital and physical beings, our lives interwoven with technology and memory. The voice mail in the cloud represents this duality, a reminder that our essence transcends the limitations of our physical form.

Summary

Leaving a voice mail for the dead symbolizes our enduring connections and the hope that our words can bridge the gap between life and death. It reflects our desire to communicate and keep memories alive, highlighting the interplay between digital and ethereal realms.

Glossarium

Voice Mail of the Dead: A metaphor for the messages we leave for those who have passed, representing our enduring connections and desire to communicate.

Digital and Physical Duality: The interplay between our technological and physical existence, symbolized by digital files and physical presence.

Ethereal Connections: The mystical and transcendent connections that persist beyond physical life, bridging the gap between the living and the deceased.

The Echoes of Connection

I tried to contact you, but you were gone,
Yet in the cloud, our voices linger on.
Digital files in the ethereal space,
Messages of love, in timeless embrace.

My voice, a whisper, floating free,
In the vast expanse, where you might be.
Hope and memory, intertwined,
In the voice mail of the dead, we find.

The Transcendape guides through realms unseen,
Where life and death, a fluid dream.
Connections persist, beyond the veil,
In the digital cloud, our stories prevail.

Leaving messages, a bridge we build,
In the silence, our hearts are filled.
With echoes of love, we reach across,
In the voice mail of the dead, no loss.
