I’ve been living so long
that time has become
a character in my story.
I am looked at
in a certain light,
not because
of my accomplishments
or lack thereof,
but because I am old.
I never asked to be old.
To judge
my personality,
my physical state
and my track record
based on longevity is
an honor I never asked for;
a competition I never entered.
Still,
I gratefully admit,
that the gravities of time,
the diminishment of the senses,
the letting go of control of things,
all bring perceptions and perspectives
I could not possibly have as a young person.
I simply wasn’t ready for the wisdom of age.
I was too busy being young and stupid.

Time as a Character in the Story of Life
In the narrative of existence, time emerges not merely as a backdrop but as a character, shaping and defining the journey. Longevity transforms into a defining trait, casting a distinct light on one’s life, independent of accomplishments or failures. This perspective underscores the unique interplay between time and identity, where age becomes a central character in the unfolding story.
The Unasked Honor of Age
The societal tendency to judge individuals based on their age rather than their personal attributes or achievements is an unasked honor and an unintended competition. It places a spotlight on age as a marker of worth or achievement, a role that is often unrequested and unanticipated.
The Gravity of Time and Aging
With the passage of time comes a shift in perspective, an evolution in understanding. The gravities of time – the physical changes, the diminishment of senses, and the gradual release of control – bring about insights and perceptions unattainable in youth. These changes, while often challenging, offer a unique lens through which to view life.
The Wisdom of Age Versus the Fervor of Youth
The wisdom that accompanies aging stands in stark contrast to the vigor and often unrefined nature of youth. The acknowledgment that one was not ready for the wisdom of age during youth highlights a natural progression in life’s journey. It illustrates the cycle of growth, learning, and evolving understanding that comes with each stage of life.
Embracing the Journey of Aging
Despite the societal emphasis on youth, there is a grace in accepting and embracing the aging process. Recognizing the value of the experiences and perspectives gained over time allows for a richer appreciation of life’s journey. Aging, with its inherent wisdom and evolved viewpoints, offers a deeper understanding of existence, transcending the superficial measures of success and failure.
Summary
We reflect on the role of time as a defining character in life’s narrative, influencing perception and identity through the lens of age. The societal focus on age as a measure of worth is an unasked honor, contrasting with the unique wisdom and perspectives gained through the aging process. The journey of aging brings insights and understandings that are unattainable in youth, highlighting the evolution of wisdom over time. Embracing the aging process allows for a deeper appreciation of life’s journey and the unique perspectives it offers.
