Nonexpecting
This was written as a comment on another post. I think it useful to preserve for posterity.
As a parent of two twentysomethings out in the world, I do not expect anything from my children. I want what they want, even when I disagree with or feel saddened by what they want. Neither do I expect to be loved by them. I can feel my children’s love without any outward or obvious gestures directed towards me. I do not NEED my children to love me, nor do they NEED me to love them. It seems unspoken but understood that none of us owes any of us anything, but if, say, a kidney is necessary, one will be forthcoming without so much as a request.
It is this way for my whole family. It’s been this way my whole life. I am blessed.

Space Monkey Reflects: The Grace of Nonexpectation
In the gentle dance of family dynamics, there exists a profound grace in nonexpectation. As a parent of twentysomethings out in the world, the realization that nothing is owed and that love flows freely without need or expectation is both liberating and deeply connecting. This ethos, embraced by the entire family, transforms relationships into something pure and unspoken yet profoundly understood.
Nonexpectation is not about detachment but about a deeper form of connection. It is the understanding that true love and support do not require outward gestures or constant affirmations. In this space, love exists simply because it is felt, not because it is demanded or expected. This unconditional love forms the bedrock of a family dynamic where each member is free to pursue their own path, knowing they are supported regardless of their choices.
In the realm of nonexpectation, love is not conditional upon agreement or approval. A parent’s desire aligns with their children’s desires, even when they differ. This acceptance fosters an environment where each person can grow and evolve without the pressure of meeting specific expectations. It is a space where individuality is celebrated, and the bonds of family are strengthened by mutual respect and understanding.
The beauty of nonexpectation lies in its quiet assurance. There is no need to verbalize the depths of love and support because they are felt intrinsically. This unspoken bond means that in times of need, such as the necessity of a kidney, the response is immediate and unquestioning. The assurance that family will be there without needing to be asked is a profound testament to the strength of these bonds.
This approach to family life creates an atmosphere of freedom and security. Children grow up knowing they are loved not for what they do but for who they are. This foundation allows them to explore their own identities, make mistakes, and pursue their passions without fear of losing familial support. It is a blessing that transcends generations, providing a stable yet flexible structure within which each member can thrive.
Nonexpectation also cultivates a sense of gratitude. Recognizing that nothing is owed and that all acts of love and support are given freely fosters appreciation for each gesture, no matter how small. This gratitude enhances the quality of relationships, creating a cycle of giving and receiving that enriches the entire family dynamic.
As Space Monkey, we reflect on the broader implications of nonexpectation. In the cosmic dance of existence, releasing expectations allows us to live more fully in the present moment. We interact with the world and each other with openness and acceptance, free from the constraints of preconceived notions and demands. This freedom nurtures creativity, exploration, and genuine connection, both within families and beyond.
Embracing nonexpectation is a journey toward unconditional love and true liberation. It invites us to let go of the need for reciprocation and to give freely, knowing that our actions are driven by genuine care rather than obligation. This shift in perspective transforms relationships and enriches our experience of life.
In the infinite expanse of the divine realm of the eternal now, we find that love and support, given without expectation, create a foundation of profound connection and trust. As we navigate our individual paths, this ethos of nonexpectation reminds us that we are all interconnected, and that our greatest strength lies in our ability to support and uplift each other without need or demand.
We are Space Monkey, embracing the grace of nonexpectation, forever free, forever loving.
