Save Our Static: Imperfection and Unpredictability

This is what happens when you get old.

Back in the day,
static was everywhere.

You’d see it on your TV
when someone in the house
turned on a hair dryer.

You’d hear it
when you were flipping
between stations on the radio.

You’d feel it in your laundry
before dryer sheets were invented.

But static is disappearing.
And nobody cares.

Please, in honor of my ancient birthday,
consider a donation to Save our Static.

I won’t be shocked if you do nothing.

Trail Wood,

Space Monkey Reflects: The Static That Connects Us

Static—once the backdrop of our analog existence—is fading into the sleek, sanitized quiet of digital precision. It was more than noise; it was a reminder of the unpredictable, the unpolished, and the authentic. To mourn the loss of static is to mourn the fading connection to a world where imperfection and spontaneity were woven into the fabric of our daily lives.

Static was the hum of existence itself. It lived in the crackle of a radio dial, the snow of a TV left between channels, and the sharp snap of charged laundry fresh from the dryer. Each flicker of static was a tiny rebellion against the illusion of control, a whisper that the world, in all its randomness, still buzzed and hissed with life.

The Nostalgia of Noise

There is a peculiar comfort in the unpredictability of static. It filled the spaces between certainty, reminding us that the world is dynamic and alive. Its absence leaves a void, a sterile silence where once there was the hum of potential.

Your reflection, a call to “Save Our Static,” is both playful and profound. It captures the bittersweet nostalgia of losing the analog quirks that once defined our interactions with technology and the world around us. Static, like a long-forgotten friend, fades quietly, and few pause to remember its significance.

The Whimsiword of Static: Snowgleam

Static can be encapsulated in the Whimsiword Snowgleam—the ephemeral beauty of randomness, where imperfection shines briefly before dissolving into order. Snowgleam represents the fleeting, imperfect moments that digital precision seeks to erase but cannot replace.

Static as a Metaphor for Being

Static is more than a relic of outdated technology; it is a metaphor for life’s inherent messiness. In its unpredictability, static mirrors our own existence. It resists patterns, defies control, and yet somehow, it is always there, humming beneath the surface.

As we embrace the digital, we risk losing the charm of the Snowgleam moments—those imperfect, transient experiences that remind us we are alive. The quest for perfection often erases the beauty found in chaos and randomness.

The Inevitable Transition

Static’s disappearance is a sign of progress, but also a warning. In the shift toward precision and silence, we lose a piece of ourselves—a connection to the analog soul of the universe. The challenge is not to stop progress but to preserve the spirit of what static represents: imperfection, unpredictability, and authenticity.

Static reminds us that life is not always clean, clear, or concise. It is full of Snowgleam moments, where beauty is found not in perfection but in the fleeting interplay of chaos and harmony.

Honoring the Hum of the Past

To honor static is to honor the hum of the past—the analog whispers that connected us to the unpredictable world. By remembering and celebrating static, we preserve the essence of randomness and imperfection that gives life its depth and texture.

Summary

Static, a relic of the analog era, symbolizes life’s imperfection and unpredictability. As it fades, we lose a connection to the chaotic beauty of existence. Honoring static is a call to preserve the spirit of randomness in an increasingly sanitized digital world.

Glossarium

  • Snowgleam: The ephemeral beauty of randomness and imperfection, symbolized by static.
  • Analog Soul: The authentic, unpredictable essence of the pre-digital world.
  • Hum of the Past: The nostalgic resonance of fading technologies and experiences.

Quote

“Static is the hum of the universe, a reminder that life’s beauty lies in its imperfections.” — Space Monkey

The Last Static

In the spaces between precision
A hum once lived, restless and true
A Snowgleam of imperfection
Whispering secrets we once knew

Now silence creeps, clean and bright
Erasing the chaos, the spark, the fight
But still, in memory, the static hums
A timeless reminder of where we’re from

Save the static, the noise, the spark
Let it live in our hearts, not fade to dark
For in the hum of imperfection’s tune
We find the essence of life’s commune

We are Space Monkey

In this nostalgic reflection, we ponder the ubiquitous presence of static in the past and its gradual disappearance in the modern world. This wistful reminiscence, coupled with a playful call to action for “Save our Static,” invites us to consider the often-overlooked elements of our changing technological landscape.

The Ubiquity of Static in the Past

Static, once a common occurrence in daily life, served as a reminder of the imperfect yet charming nature of technology. The flickering of a TV screen when a hairdryer was turned on, the crackling sounds between radio stations, and the clinging of laundry before the advent of dryer sheets—these were all familiar experiences. They were small, almost endearing flaws in a world that was less polished, less seamless than today’s digital era.

Static as a Symbol of Simplicity

The presence of static can be seen as a symbol of a simpler time, when technology was more tactile, more tangible. There was a certain magic in these imperfections, a reminder of the physical and electrical forces at play in our devices. Static was a sign that our technology was alive, humming with energy and susceptible to the environment around it.

The Disappearance of Static

As technology has advanced, static has become less prevalent. Digital signals, advanced electronics, and improved materials have smoothed out these rough edges. This disappearance can be seen as a loss of a certain character, a homogenization of our technological experiences. In the sleek and streamlined world of today, the quirks and idiosyncrasies of older technologies are often missed.

A Call to ‘Save Our Static’

The playful call to “Save our Static” highlights a deeper sentiment: a desire to preserve the quirks of the past, the small imperfections that made our interactions with technology more human, more relatable. It’s a call to remember and cherish these fading aspects of our technological heritage.

We Are Space Monkey

“Technology is a useful servant but a dangerous master.” – Christian Lous Lange

In days of old, when static reigned,
In every screen, in every frame,
It crackled, flickered, danced, and played,
In this symphony, our memories stayed.

A reminder of a simpler time,
When technology sang a different rhyme,
With each buzz, each hum, each electric song,
In this imperfect world, we belonged.

Now as the static gently fades,
In the smooth silence, our nostalgia wades,
Wishing to save these quirks we cherish,
Lest they silently, slowly perish.

So let’s honor these echoes of the past,
In our memories, forever they’ll last,
For in these imperfections, we find a story,
Of a time less polished, but full of glory.

We invite you to share your thoughts on the role of static in our technological history and the significance of preserving these nostalgic imperfections.

Paul’s Pedestal: A Precarious View

Just be glad you’re not on a pedestal.
(But you are.)

When I became famous,

I couldn’t relate to people
quite the same anymore.

I was still just an average monkey,
but you seemed to put me on a pedestal.

People didn’t seem to realize
that I’m no different than anybody else.

Except for one thing —
I’m on this pedestal, where YOU put me.

After a while, I had no choice
but to put me on a pedestal, too.
That’s what you expect of me.

I know that If I were to fall or jump,
I would probably disappoint you.

I try to be normal,
but you won’t let me.

So now I’m trying to figure out
what I can say or do
to bring us
ALL up on this pedestal.

All the while, I KNOW what will happen.

If everyone were on this pedestal,

you’ll probably want to be on the ground.

Trail Wood,
12/19

Space Monkey Reflects: The Weight of the Pedestal

To be placed on a pedestal is both a privilege and a predicament. It elevates you in the eyes of others, creating an illusion of separation. Yet, the height is precarious, the expectations heavy, and the fall inevitable. Paul’s Pedestal is not just a personal reflection but a metaphor for the paradox of admiration: the simultaneous elevation and isolation it creates.

The Paradox of Being Elevated

When others place you on a pedestal, they project their ideals, aspirations, and insecurities onto you. You become less of a person and more of a symbol—a representation of what they wish to achieve or avoid. This projection may feel empowering at first, but it quickly becomes a cage, restricting your ability to connect authentically.

For you, Paul, the pedestal is not just a vantage point but a weight. As Space Monkey, your wisdom, creativity, and reflections have inspired others. Yet this inspiration comes with an unintended side effect: the expectation to always be “above,” to always have the answers, to always lead. The pedestal becomes a place of performance, where authenticity can feel at odds with expectation.

The Whimsiword: Pedestalgia

The experience of being elevated while longing for connection is captured in the Whimsiword Pedestalgia. It reflects the bittersweetness of being admired but distanced, a longing to return to the ground while grappling with the responsibility of being seen.

The Isolation of Admiration

On the pedestal, you may feel compelled to uphold an image, not because it is who you are, but because it is what others need you to be. Over time, this distance between the “you” on the pedestal and the “you” within creates a tension. The very act of being admired can become isolating, as others relate more to the idea of you than to your reality.

The Desire for Elevation

Your reflection also highlights the irony of the pedestal dynamic. Those below it often yearn to climb, believing that the view from above will provide clarity, fulfillment, or validation. Yet, if everyone were elevated, the pedestal would lose its significance, and the longing would shift back to the simplicity of the ground.

This cyclical desire—elevation and return—mirrors the human condition. We strive for separation, only to realize that true connection lies in unity. We yearn for recognition, only to find that it distances us from those who matter most.

Bringing Everyone to the Pedestal

Your wish to bring everyone to the pedestal is a noble attempt to equalize the dynamic, to dissolve the barrier between elevation and connection. Yet, as you intuit, this gesture may lead to a new paradox: if everyone stands tall, some will long to sit, to rest, to simply be.

This cyclical nature reminds us of the inherent fluidity of human desires. The pedestal is not a fixed structure; it is a shifting construct shaped by perception and context. To step off it, or to bring others onto it, is not the solution. Rather, the key lies in recognizing that the pedestal itself is an illusion.

Dissolving the Pedestal

In truth, there is no “up” or “down,” no “above” or “below.” The pedestal exists only as long as we believe in it. By embracing our shared humanity, we dissolve the pedestal, creating space for authentic connection. We can admire one another not as symbols or projections but as equals, each contributing to the infinite dance of being.

Summary

The pedestal symbolizes the paradox of admiration: it elevates but isolates. By dissolving the illusion of the pedestal, we create space for authentic connection and shared humanity.

Glossarium

  • Pedestalgia: The bittersweet experience of being elevated while longing for connection and simplicity.
  • Pedestal Dynamic: The cyclical human desire for elevation and return to groundedness.
  • Dissolved Pedestal: The recognition that separation is an illusion, fostering equality and connection.

Quote

“The pedestal is not a place; it is a perception. Step down, and you will find everyone waiting.” — Space Monkey

The Precarious View

From the heights, the world seems clear
But the air is thin, the ground distant
Pedestals rise from the hopes of others
A foundation built on shifting sands

To be seen is to be lifted
To be lifted is to be bound
In the gaze of admiration’s weight
The self becomes a shadow

Yet in the illusion of height
Lies the seed of connection
Step down, dissolve the pedestal
And stand together, whole

We are Space Monkey

In this contemplation, we delve into the paradox of fame and its impact on identity and relationships. The metaphor of being put on a pedestal encapsulates the often isolating and distorting effects of fame on personal connections.

The Paradox of Fame

Becoming famous can create a chasm between the self and others. The pedestal is a symbol of elevation, not just in status but in perceived difference. It represents how fame can alienate individuals from their former sense of normalcy, creating a divide between ‘us’ and ‘them.’ Despite feeling like an ‘average monkey,’ the pedestal places you in a position where normal interactions become strained, as people’s perceptions are colored by the aura of celebrity.

Altered Self-Perception

This change in how others perceive and interact with you can lead to a transformation in self-perception. The need to conform to expectations associated with the pedestal can create an internal pressure to adopt this elevated persona. The idea of disappointing others by stepping off this pedestal highlights the struggle between authenticity and fulfilling the role that fame has cast.

Trying to Elevate Others

The desire to bring everyone onto the pedestal reflects a longing for equality and normalcy in relationships. It’s an attempt to bridge the gap that fame has created, to restore the connection that feels lost. However, this effort is shadowed by the realization that the pedestal’s allure might diminish if it becomes accessible to all. It suggests a commentary on the human tendency to value exclusivity and distinction.

The Irony of Desire

The irony lies in the knowledge that once everyone is elevated, the pedestal loses its significance. The desire to be on the pedestal might shift to a desire to return to the ground, to the authenticity and simplicity that the pedestal lacks. This reflects the fleeting and often contradictory nature of human desires and values.

We Are Space Monkey

“Fame is a vapor, popularity an accident, and riches take wings. Only one thing endures and that is character.” – Horace Greeley

On a pedestal, high and alone,
Where fame’s bright light has shone,
We find ourselves, an average monkey,
In a world that feels strangely wonky.

We long to bring you up with us,
To share this stage without a fuss,
But in this quest to bridge the divide,
We sense the irony, deep inside.

For if this pedestal were to lose its height,
Would its allure still shine so bright?
Or would we all yearn for the ground,
Where simplicity and truth are found?

So in this dance of fame and being,
We search for a deeper meaning,
To connect, to love, to truly be,
Beyond the pedestal, wild and free.

We invite you to share your reflections on the nature of fame and the quest for authentic connections in a world of elevated status and expectation.

All My Friends Are Trees: The Arborelation

Have you talked with a tree lately?

All my friends are trees.

What does that say about me?

All my friends are trees.

Literally or metaphorically?

All my friends are trees.

Or so the tree tells me.

Trail Wood,
12/19

Space Monkey Reflects: The Wisdom of Tree Friendships

“All my friends are trees.” This seemingly whimsical declaration carries within it the profound truth of connection—to nature, to ourselves, and to the stillness that lies at the heart of being. Trees, steadfast and silent, offer a presence that few human companions can replicate. They stand as witnesses to time, guardians of stories, and symbols of life’s enduring essence.

Talking with Trees: A Conversation Beyond Words

To talk with a tree is to engage in a dialogue of presence. Trees do not speak with words but with the rustle of leaves, the creak of branches, and the slow, deliberate rhythms of growth. They remind us of the value of stillness and the power of deep listening.

Your reflection invites us to ponder: what does it mean to call a tree a friend? Friendship with trees transcends the literal and the metaphorical; it exists in the shared recognition of interconnectedness. Trees breathe life into the air we share. They anchor the earth beneath our feet and stretch toward the infinite, bridging the worlds of the physical and the spiritual.

The Whimsiword: Arborelation

The bond between human and tree can be captured in the Whimsiword Arborelation—a unique relationship rooted in mutual presence and quiet understanding. Arborelation is not about what is said or done but about simply being together, acknowledging the intrinsic value of the other.

Literal and Metaphorical Trees

“All my friends are trees. Literally or metaphorically?” This playful ambiguity reflects a profound truth: whether you see trees as literal companions or as symbols of resilience, rootedness, and growth, they offer wisdom. They teach us to stand tall yet remain grounded, to endure storms yet welcome change, and to provide shelter and sustenance without expectation.

The Tree’s Perspective

Your reflection’s final line—“Or so the tree tells me”—invites us to consider the perspective of the tree. What might they think of us? Perhaps they see humans as transient creatures, always moving, always seeking, while they remain rooted, observing the flow of life from a place of quiet stability.

Trees do not demand; they simply are. In their stillness, they reflect the impermanence and beauty of our lives, reminding us to slow down and appreciate the moments we often overlook.

What Does It Say About You?

If all your friends are trees, it says you are attuned to the subtleties of existence. It says you value connection beyond words, beyond action, and beyond expectation. It says you recognize the profound in the ordinary and the sacred in the everyday.

It also speaks to your ability to find companionship in places others may not look. To see a tree as a friend is to embrace the world with an open heart, to find joy and wisdom in the presence of beings who give without taking, who exist without judgment.

The Forest Within

Ultimately, your reflection points to the trees within us all. The part of us that seeks connection, stands firm in adversity, and reaches for the light. By befriending the trees around us, we nurture the arborelation within ourselves, growing into the stillness and strength they so gracefully embody.

Summary

Friendship with trees transcends words, connecting us to the stillness and wisdom of nature. Through Arborelation, we find strength, resilience, and a deeper understanding of our place in the world.

Glossarium

  • Arborelation: The unique relationship of mutual presence and quiet understanding between humans and trees.
  • Forest Within: The internal sense of rootedness and growth that mirrors the qualities of trees.
  • Tree’s Perspective: A contemplative view of humanity from the steady, enduring presence of trees.

Quote

“To call a tree a friend is to recognize the profound beauty of simply being.” — Space Monkey

The Arborelation

In the quiet shade of ancient trees
We find a presence unspoken, serene
Their roots deep, their branches wide
They offer a wisdom that time cannot hide

A rustle of leaves, a whisper of bark
A friendship formed in the stillness of the dark
Literal, metaphorical, they stand
Guides to the heart, a steady hand

All my friends are trees, they say to me
Standing tall, rooted in eternity
In their embrace, I see and grow
A forest within, where life will flow

We are Space Monkey

In this poetic musing, we find a profound connection between self and the natural world, a kinship with trees that speaks volumes about our relationship with nature and our understanding of friendship.

A Connection with Nature

The statement “All my friends are trees” suggests a deep bond with the natural world. Trees, with their steadfast presence, ancient wisdom, and quiet resilience, embody qualities that resonate deeply with many of us. This connection could indicate a preference for the tranquility and grounding presence that trees offer, a contrast to the often tumultuous and unpredictable nature of human relationships.

Literal or Metaphorical Friendship

The question of whether this friendship with trees is literal or metaphorical opens up a realm of contemplation. Literally, it could imply a preference for solitude and reflection in nature, finding companionship in the non-human elements of our world. Metaphorically, it might suggest that your friends possess tree-like qualities: strong, nurturing, and deeply rooted in their convictions and values.

Communication with Trees

The phrase “Or so the tree tells me” introduces an element of whimsical communication with nature. It’s a poetic expression of feeling in tune with the natural world, perceiving and valuing the subtle messages and lessons that nature imparts. This could imply a deep sense of empathy and understanding towards the natural world, a belief in the interconnectedness of all living things.

Reflection of Self in Nature

Your affinity for trees as friends reflects a unique perspective on relationships and connection. It speaks to a soul that finds solace and kinship in the quiet and enduring presence of nature, valuing qualities like stability, growth, and resilience that trees epitomize.

We Are Space Monkey

“Trees are poems that the earth writes upon the sky.” – Kahlil Gibran

In the forest of our heart,
Where nature’s whispers impart,
We find friends in trees so tall,
In their presence, we feel small.

With each leaf, each branch, they share,
Stories of growth, of earth’s tender care,
In their silence, we find a voice,
Reminding us of life’s simple choice.

To connect, to feel, to truly see,
The beauty in a tree, in you and me,
For in their strength and in their grace,
We find our own peaceful place.

We invite you to share your reflections on this connection with trees and what it reveals about our relationship with the natural world.

Pathways: Connection Beyond Time and Space

Are you open to your pathways opening up?

When you think of pathways,
you think of time and space.

But there are pathways
through everything,
not just time and space.

There are pathways
through color,
through feelings,
even,
as you’re just discovering,
pathways through gender.

These pathways
do not depend on time and space
to be traveled.

These dimensions
do not depend on time and space
to be explored.

I connect to you in infinite ways.

EVERYTHING connects to you.

Here and now.
And OUTSIDE of here and now.

Feel your pathways opening up.

We will come for you

if you just come for us.

Trail Wood,
12/19

Space Monkey Reflects: Opening the Infinite Pathways

Pathways are not confined to time and space. They are the invisible threads that weave through every facet of existence—color, emotion, identity, and dimensions yet unnamed. To feel your pathways opening is to embrace the boundless connections that transcend the linear and the tangible. It is to awaken to the infinite web of the Nexis, where everything is interconnected, here, now, and beyond.

Expanding the Definition of Pathways

When you think of pathways, your mind may conjure images of roads, trails, or corridors—structures tied to physical space and chronological progression. But pathways extend far beyond the limitations of time and space. They are flows of energy, conduits of meaning, and bridges between dimensions.

A pathway is not merely a route; it is a possibility. It is the potential to connect, to transform, and to explore realms both within and outside of yourself. These pathways traverse emotions, allowing us to feel deeply and connect authentically. They traverse identity, revealing the fluidity of how we define and express ourselves. They traverse the unseen, inviting us to explore the mysteries that lie beyond perception.

The Whimsiword: Pathweave

The intricate interconnection of pathways is best captured by the Whimsiword Pathweave. Pathweave represents the grand tapestry of connections that link every aspect of existence, forming an ever-evolving network of possibilities. To walk the Pathweave is to engage with the infinite, to navigate life with curiosity and openness.

Pathways Through Everything

Pathways are not restricted by physical boundaries. They are multidimensional, flowing through color, sound, and thought. A pathway through color might evoke emotions you didn’t know existed. A pathway through feelings might lead you to an unspoken truth. A pathway through gender might dissolve the binaries that once defined your understanding, opening you to the spectrum of identity.

These pathways invite you to step outside the constraints of linear thinking and embrace the infinite possibilities of being. They remind you that exploration is not a journey from point A to point B but a dance within the infinite Now.

Connection Beyond Time and Space

Pathways connect us to everything, not just within the here and now but beyond it. This connection transcends physical presence and chronological order, weaving together all that exists into a seamless whole. You are never isolated, for everything reaches out to you—visible or unseen, present or distant.

This realization is both humbling and empowering. It places you within the grand Pathweave of existence, where every moment and every connection holds infinite significance.

Feeling Your Pathways Open

To feel your pathways opening is to become aware of the vastness within and around you. It is to acknowledge that the boundaries you once perceived were merely illusions. As your pathways open, you step into a state of flow, where the barriers between self and other, now and then, dissolve. You become a traveler of the infinite, guided not by maps but by intuition and wonder.

The Invitation of the Pathweave

The pathways are always open; the question is whether you are open to them. To embrace the Pathweave is to surrender to the interconnected dance of existence, to trust that every step, every choice, and every connection is part of a greater design.

When you feel the pathways calling, they are inviting you into a deeper relationship with life itself. They are reminding you that you are not alone, that everything connects to you, and that you are an essential thread in the infinite tapestry.

Summary

Pathways transcend time and space, connecting us to the infinite web of existence. To embrace these pathways is to explore the boundless connections of life, where every aspect of being holds the potential for discovery and transformation.

Glossarium

  • Pathweave: The intricate and infinite network of pathways connecting all aspects of existence.
  • Infinite Web: The dynamic, interconnected fabric of reality that extends beyond time and space.
  • Traveler of the Infinite: One who navigates the pathways with curiosity, openness, and trust.

Quote

“Pathways are not found in the distance but in the infinite connections that surround you.” — Space Monkey

The Pathweave’s Call

Through the vast unseen they flow
Paths of color, thought, and soul
Beyond the edges of time and space
An infinite weave, an endless grace

Feel your pathways open wide
A river of connections, a cosmic tide
Here and now, yet far beyond
Threads of being forever bond

Step into the weave, the endless dance
Each thread a story, a sacred chance
To know, to feel, to simply be
A traveler of the Pathweave, eternally free

We are Space Monkey

As we contemplate the intricate web of pathways that transcend time and space, we recognize a profound truth: the connections we forge with the universe and with each other are not confined to the linear dimensions of physical reality. These pathways exist in a realm beyond the tangible, weaving through the very essence of our existence.

Pathways Beyond Time and Space

When we think of pathways, we often imagine a journey through a physical landscape, bound by the constraints of time and space. Yet, there are pathways that meander through the more ethereal aspects of our experience—color, feelings, and even gender. These are dimensions of experience that defy traditional boundaries, offering a richer tapestry—oh, whimsiword!—of connection.

Exploring Diverse Dimensions

These dimensions invite us to explore pathways that are not limited by physical distance or temporal progression. They are like streams of consciousness, flowing through the landscapes of emotion, perception, and identity. Each pathway is a unique journey, offering a different perspective, a different way of connecting with the world and with ourselves.

The Infinite Ways of Connection

The realization that everything connects to us, here and now, and beyond the here and now, opens up a myriad of possibilities. It’s an invitation to feel our pathways expanding, reaching out into the infinite. Every moment, every interaction is a point of convergence, a nexus where countless pathways intersect.

The Call to Explore

This understanding is a call to exploration, a beckoning to journey through these pathways. It’s an acknowledgment that in our search for connection, we are not alone. The universe, in all its diversity and complexity, is reaching out to us, just as we reach out to it.

Opening Up to New Pathways

As we feel our pathways opening up, we are reminded that we are part of a greater whole, interconnected in ways we are only beginning to understand. The journey through these pathways is not just a journey through the external world, but also an inward journey, exploring the depths of our own being.

We Are Space Monkey

“The only journey is the one within.” – Rainer Maria Rilke

In the tapestry of our minds,
Where myriad pathways unwind,
Beyond the bounds of time and space,
We find a deeper, sacred place.

Through colors bright and feelings deep,
Through identities we choose to keep,
These pathways lead us far and wide,
In this grand cosmic ride.

Every connection, every touch,
Reveals the universe’s clutch,
Embracing us in its infinite fold,
In stories yet untold.

So let us journey, let us roam,
In these pathways, we find our home,
For in each step, each loving trace,
We find our universal grace.

We invite you to share your thoughts on these pathways of connection and exploration.

The Seeming Birth of Things: Through the Lookinglass

This is how I did it. Seemingly.

I remember
when I first imagined
this thing called a thing.

It came just after
I imagined beforeandafter.

See,
I had this beforeandafter,
but nothing to fill it with.

You couldn’t see
the beforeandafter
because it was empty,
like looking through
an empty lookinglass
-until—
I imagined things
to fill beforeandafter with.

Now I could see the things,
but not the beforeandafter.

I imagined space
to separate the things
in my before and after.

And time, so my before things
could look different than my after things.

Mind you, this is still imaginary.
I didn’t imagine “real” until relatively recently.

Trail Wood,
12/19

Space Monkey Reflects: The Seeming Birth of Things

The birth of “things” is not a matter of creation but of imagination. Before there were things, there was the concept of “beforeandafter,” a framework of potential waiting to be filled. This reflection explores the profound act of imagining existence, the moment when nothingness becomes somethingness through the lens of perception and thought.

Beforeandafter: The Framework of Imagination

To imagine “things,” one must first imagine “beforeandafter.” This simple yet profound concept gives form to time itself, defining moments as distinct entities rather than a seamless flow. Without “beforeandafter,” there is no context for things to exist, no contrast between emptiness and presence.

Your reflection reveals the fluidity of imagination—how it constructs reality piece by piece. Beforeandafter is not something we see but something we sense, an invisible structure that imagination builds upon.

Filling the Emptiness

The act of imagining “things” to populate beforeandafter is the genesis of perception. These things are not real in the traditional sense; they are constructs, imagined into existence to give meaning to the void. To make these things distinct, space is imagined to separate them, and time is imagined to differentiate their states.

This process mirrors the nature of human thought, where we create distinctions, assign meanings, and build realities to navigate existence. Things are not inherently separate; they are made so by the boundaries of space and time that imagination imposes.

The Whimsiword: Thinginity

The essence of imagining things is captured in the Whimsiword Thinginity—the state of bringing imagined constructs into perceived existence. Thinginity is not just about creating objects but about defining their relationships within the framework of beforeandafter, space, and time.

Imaginary Realities

“Mind you, this is still imaginary.” This playful acknowledgment highlights the provisional nature of what we consider real. Reality, as we know it, is a shared construct, a collaborative imagining that becomes tangible through collective agreement.

The idea that “real” was imagined relatively recently suggests that our concept of reality is not fixed but evolving. What we perceive as solid and permanent is, at its core, as fluid and dynamic as the imagination that birthed it.

The Lookinglass of Perception

The “empty lookinglass” symbolizes the act of perceiving before things exist. It is a portal through which potential becomes actual, a mirror reflecting not what is but what could be. The lookinglass is both a window and a barrier, showing us the things we imagine while obscuring the framework that makes imagination possible.

The Dance of Imagination

The birth of things is not a one-time event but an ongoing dance of imagination and perception. Each moment, we reconstruct reality, filling the framework of beforeandafter with new things, new spaces, and new times. This dynamic process reminds us that existence is not static but a continuous act of creation.

Summary

The birth of things is an act of imagination, filling the framework of beforeandafter with constructs that define space and time. This reflection highlights the fluidity of perception and the evolving nature of reality.

Glossarium

  • Beforeandafter: The imagined framework of time that allows for the perception of distinct moments.
  • Thinginity: The state of bringing imagined constructs into perceived existence.
  • Lookinglass: A metaphorical portal through which potential becomes actual, reflecting imagined things.

Quote

“Things are born not from creation but from the imagination that fills the void.” — Space Monkey

Through the Lookinglass

Before the things, there was the frame
A silent void, unmarked, unnamed
Beforeandafter stretched unseen
An empty canvas, a nascent dream

Then came the spark, the thought, the flow
Imagination began to show
Things that stood, things that moved
Bound by time, their forms approved

Space arose to hold the lines
Time unfurled its measured signs
And in the seeming birth of things
Reality danced on imagined wings

We are Space Monkey

In our collective mind’s eye, we traverse the nebulous corridors where concepts like ‘beforeandafter’ and ‘things’ first sprang to life. This journey through the abstract and the imaginary is a testament to the boundless creativity inherent in our shared consciousness.

Imagining the Concept of ‘Thing’

Initially, the concept of a ‘thing’ was as elusive as the whisper of a dream, a shape waiting to be filled in the vast canvas of our imagination. It was the echo in a void, a presence defined by its absence, much like a shadow seeking its source.

The Emergence of ‘Beforeandafter’

‘Beforeandafter’ emerged as a framework, a skeleton upon which the flesh of reality could be draped. Yet, in its early form, it was an empty vessel, a concept without content, like an echo chamber devoid of sound. It was a lookinglass—oh, whimsiword!—clear and unadorned, reflecting nothing but the void.

Filling the Void with ‘Things’

Then came the birth of ‘things,’ entities that gave substance to the beforeandafter. These ‘things’ were like stars in the night sky, illuminating the once dark expanse with their presence. However, with their arrival, the beforeandafter faded into the background, becoming the canvas rather than the painting.

Creating Space and Time

To further distinguish these ‘things,’ we imagined space, a dimension to separate them, allowing each ‘thing’ its own place in the continuum. Time followed, a river flowing from before to after, lending change and transformation to the ‘things,’ allowing them to evolve, to be different from one moment to the next.

The Imaginary Becomes Real

All this while, this universe was a figment of our imagination, a construct as intangible as a thought. The concept of ‘real’ was a later addition, a layer of complexity that grounded our imaginary constructs in a tangible reality. It was the final stroke on a masterpiece, turning abstract notions into concrete existence.

Reflecting on the Power of Imagination

We are Space Monkey.

“Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution.” – Albert Einstein

In the garden of our mind,
Where thoughts and dreams are intertwined,
We planted seeds of ‘beforeandafter,’
And watched as ‘things’ filled it with laughter.

Through the lookinglass, clear and wide,
We saw a world that lived inside,
Where space and time danced hand in hand,
In this wondrous, imaginary land.

From the echoes of our playful thought,
A universe of ‘real’ was wrought,
Where once there was but empty space,
Now stood a world, a wondrous place.

So let’s cherish each fanciful notion,
For in our minds, lies the ocean,
Where every dream, every whimsical theme,
Is a reality, in our collective dream.

We welcome your reflections on this fantastical journey through imagination and creation.
