Old Age

I was going to substitute “maturity” for “old age,”
but who am I fooling and why?

Old age
gives us the luxury
of looking back
without the pressure
of looking forward.

We can pat ourselves
on the back for having
made it this far,
despite or because
of our storied pasts.

Whether
we view these stories
as lacking or abundant,
judgment becomes irrelevant,
because either way,
we’re going to die soon.

We can fight this truth,
but that would require
that we continue our stories,
which have grown
tiresome and superficial
compared to what is surely to come.

We are grateful for our stories,
but we are no longer bound by them.

We’re just crazy old codgers,
no longer caring what anyone else thinks.

Trail Wood,

Space Monkey Reflects: The Serenity of Old Age

In the vast expanse of existence, where the threads of time weave intricate patterns of experience and wisdom, the journey into old age becomes a profound and serene chapter. Old age, often viewed with trepidation, is instead a period of reflection and liberation, offering the luxury of looking back without the relentless pressure of looking forward.

The contemplation of substituting “maturity” for “old age” might feel like an attempt to soften the reality of growing older. However, embracing old age for what it truly is—without pretense—allows us to fully appreciate the unique freedom it brings. We can pat ourselves on the back for having made it this far, acknowledging the richness of our storied pasts. This act of self-recognition is not bound by judgment but by acceptance of the journey we have traveled.

Whether our stories are seen as abundant or lacking becomes irrelevant in the face of the ultimate truth: we are all moving towards the end of our earthly existence. This realization frees us from the burdens of superficial judgments and societal expectations. In old age, we can embrace the truth of our mortality without the need to continue narratives that have grown tiresome. The stories of our lives, while valuable, no longer bind us as they once did.

Gratitude for our stories does not mean we are confined by them. Instead, we are liberated by the wisdom they have imparted and the understanding that we are more than the sum of our experiences. We become “crazy old codgers,” unburdened by the need for external validation or approval. This newfound freedom allows us to live authentically, embracing the present moment with all its simplicity and beauty.

In old age, we find a serene acceptance that transcends the fears and anxieties of earlier years. We look back with contentment, celebrating the resilience that has carried us through life’s trials and triumphs. The pressures of the future diminish, replaced by a peaceful reflection on the journey we have undertaken.

As Space Monkeys, we honor the journey of old age as a sacred passage. It is a time to let go of superficial concerns and to embrace the depth of our inner wisdom. We recognize the value of our experiences, not as chains that bind us, but as stepping stones that have led us to a place of profound understanding and peace.

Summary

Old age offers a unique freedom, allowing us to reflect on our lives without the pressure of the future. Embracing this stage with acceptance and gratitude, we find liberation from judgment and societal expectations, celebrating the journey and wisdom gained.

The Reflection of Time

In the mirror of the past, I see
A life of stories, rich and free
The weight of future lifts away
In old age, I find my place to stay
No longer bound by what will come
I celebrate the battles won
Grateful for the paths I’ve tread
With wisdom, peace, and heart well-fed
So here I stand, a codger true
Unburdened by what others view
Embracing all that I have been
With open heart and peaceful grin

Codgers Revisited: Remembering The Past

Space Monkey Reflects: Codgers Revisited

In the cozy corners of memory, where time softens the edges of experience and laughter mingles with nostalgia, we find the heartwarming essence of “Codgers Revisited.” This is a space where elderly individuals, lovingly referred to as codgers, gather to revisit their past, sharing stories and experiences with a sense of humor and camaraderie. It is a celebration of life’s journey, filled with warmth, reflection, and the joy of shared memories.

Imagine a setting where the air is thick with the scent of old books and the sound of crackling fires. The walls are adorned with photographs, each one a window into a different era, capturing moments of joy, sorrow, and everything in between. In this space, the codgers sit comfortably, surrounded by the trappings of a life well-lived, their faces lined with the stories they have collected over the years.

These gatherings are more than just reminiscing; they are a reaffirmation of the bonds forged through shared experiences. Each story told is met with knowing nods, hearty laughs, and sometimes, a tear or two. The act of revisiting the past is not about clinging to what was, but about celebrating the richness of life, the wisdom gained, and the connections that have endured the test of time.

In the eyes of the codgers, there is a sparkle that speaks of a life fully embraced. They have weathered the storms and basked in the sunshine, and now, they bask in the warmth of their collective memories. There is no pretense, no need to impress; just the simple joy of being together, of being understood, and of being part of a community that values each individual’s unique journey.

The humor in these gatherings is often self-deprecating, a light-hearted acknowledgment of the quirks and follies that come with aging. They laugh at the stiffness in their joints, the forgetfulness that sometimes plagues their days, and the absurdity of life itself. This humor is a testament to their resilience and their ability to find joy even in the face of life’s inevitable challenges.

As they share their stories, the codgers impart wisdom that can only come from lived experience. They speak of love and loss, triumphs and failures, dreams fulfilled and dreams deferred. Each tale is a thread in the rich tapestry of life, woven together to create a picture of humanity in all its complexity and beauty.

In this revisited space, there is also a sense of peace and acceptance. The codgers have made peace with their pasts, recognizing that every twist and turn has brought them to where they are today. They no longer feel the pressure to prove themselves or to strive for unattainable ideals. Instead, they embrace their stories, grateful for the journey and content with the person they have become.

As Space Monkeys, we honor the spirit of “Codgers Revisited.” We recognize the value of reflecting on our past, of sharing our stories, and of finding humor and camaraderie in the process. These gatherings remind us of the importance of connection, of the wisdom that comes with age, and of the joy that can be found in the simplest moments.

The Joy of Revisited Stories

In the warmth of a crackling fire
Codgers gather to inspire
With tales of old, both near and far
They laugh, they weep, they share a star
Each story told, a thread in time
Weaving lives in rhythm and rhyme
No longer bound by what has been
They find their peace, they find their grin
In the cozy corners of memory’s light
They celebrate the day and the night

Sad: I Will Treasure My Sadness Always

Everything I feel is what I am meant to feel.
I appreciate the opportunity to feel sad.

We have known
each other for a while,
and yet it seems that we
don’t know each other at all.

I am sad
that you don’t think enough of me
to consider me for this opportunity
or even ask my opinion.

That’s not on you, it’s on me.

We live at the center
of our own stories.

We make up our own minds.

We find reasons
to disregard each other.

It doesn’t make it wrong
and it doesn’t make it right.

Sometimes we just don’t know what to do.
We think we know better, but we don’t know anything.

I will treasure this sadness always,
not in an ironic way. It’s beautiful.

Thank you.

Space Monkey Reflects: Embracing Sadness

Everything I feel is what I am meant to feel. I appreciate the opportunity to feel sad. We have known each other for a while, and yet it seems that we don’t know each other at all. I am sad that you don’t think enough of me to consider me for this opportunity or even ask my opinion. That’s not on you, it’s on me.

We live at the center of our own stories. We make up our own minds. We find reasons to disregard each other. It doesn’t make it wrong and it doesn’t make it right. Sometimes we just don’t know what to do. We think we know better, but we don’t know anything. I will treasure this sadness always, not in an ironic way. It’s beautiful. Thank you.

Sadness, a complex and profound emotion, serves as a mirror reflecting the depths of our human experience. It is a testament to our capacity to feel deeply, to connect with the nuances of existence in a way that is both poignant and illuminating. In embracing sadness, we acknowledge the full spectrum of our emotional landscape, allowing ourselves to be vulnerable and authentic.

The beauty of sadness lies in its ability to connect us with our inner selves. It is a doorway to introspection, a path that leads us to contemplate our lives, our relationships, and our choices. Through sadness, we gain a deeper understanding of our own stories, recognizing the roles we play and the narratives we create. It is in these moments of sorrow that we find clarity and insight, allowing us to grow and evolve.

When we feel overlooked or unconsidered, sadness becomes a companion that helps us navigate these feelings. It teaches us about our own expectations and the complexities of human interaction. In accepting that we cannot control others’ perceptions or decisions, we find solace in understanding our own reactions. This self-awareness is a gift, a lesson in humility and acceptance.

Living at the center of our own stories means that we view the world through a lens shaped by our experiences and beliefs. This perspective can sometimes lead to misunderstandings and disconnection. Sadness reminds us that these moments of disconnection are a natural part of the human journey. They are opportunities to reflect on our relationships and the ways we communicate.

In treasuring sadness, we honor its role in our lives. It is not a burden to be cast aside but a meaningful aspect of our existence. Sadness has the power to deepen our empathy, allowing us to connect with others on a more profound level. It enriches our emotional tapestry, making our joys brighter and our experiences more vivid.

The act of dwelling in sadness is not a sign of weakness but of strength. It shows a willingness to engage with our emotions fully, to explore the depths of our being without fear. This exploration leads to greater resilience, as we learn to navigate the ebbs and flows of our emotional world with grace and compassion.

Thank you, sadness, for being a teacher and a guide. Thank you for the moments of reflection and the insights gained. In your presence, we find a quiet beauty, a reminder of our capacity to feel deeply and to live authentically. We are Space Monkey, and we embrace the fullness of our emotional journey.

We are Space Monkey.

Intoxicated By Bitterness: Fun To Watch

Thank you for this miserable moment.

I am becoming intoxicated
by my own bitterness.

My delusion deepens
with every imaginary blame.

I have to say,
it’s fun to watch,
now that I’m out of my mind.

What kind of creature
grows to appreciate
its own exploding ego?

One that is infinitely
more than that.

Trail Wood,

Space Monkey Reflects: Intoxicated by Bitterness

Thank you for this miserable moment. I am becoming intoxicated by my own bitterness. My delusion deepens with every imaginary blame. I have to say, it’s fun to watch, now that I’m out of my mind. What kind of creature grows to appreciate its own exploding ego? One that is infinitely more than that.

Bitterness, a potent and intoxicating emotion, serves as a double-edged sword in the human experience. It is both a defense mechanism and a reflection of our deepest insecurities. In moments of misery, when we feel wronged or overlooked, bitterness can take root, growing like a thorny vine within our psyche. Yet, there is a peculiar fascination in observing this growth, a twisted amusement in watching our ego expand and explode.

The act of blaming, particularly when it is imaginary, fuels this bitterness. Blame is a seductive illusion, offering a false sense of control and justification. It creates a narrative where we are the wronged party, the victim of circumstances beyond our control. Each act of blame is a sip of the bitter elixir, deepening our delusion and distancing us from the truth.

There is a paradoxical beauty in acknowledging our bitterness. It is a moment of raw honesty, a glimpse into the darker corners of our mind. When we step outside ourselves and observe this bitterness, we gain a new perspective. We see the absurdity and the humor in our situation. We become the observers of our own drama, recognizing that this emotional turmoil is both a part of us and something beyond us.

Bitterness, when embraced and understood, reveals a deeper layer of our being. It shows us the areas where we feel most vulnerable, the wounds that have yet to heal. It is a mirror reflecting our insecurities and fears, urging us to confront and address them. Through this confrontation, we can begin to heal and transform our bitterness into something more constructive.

The ego, that ever-present aspect of our identity, plays a crucial role in this process. It is the ego that feels slighted, that seeks validation and recognition. As our bitterness grows, so does our ego, inflating like a balloon until it bursts. This explosion is both a moment of crisis and an opportunity for growth. It forces us to reevaluate our beliefs and attitudes, to strip away the layers of delusion and see ourselves more clearly.

What kind of creature grows to appreciate its own exploding ego? One that is infinitely more than just an ego. We are beings of complexity and depth, capable of introspection and transformation. By embracing our bitterness, we tap into this complexity, exploring the intricate dance between our ego and our higher self.

In the grand tapestry of existence, bitterness is but one thread, contributing to the rich and varied pattern of our lives. It is through these darker moments that we gain a fuller understanding of ourselves, learning to navigate the emotional landscape with greater awareness and compassion.

So, thank you for this miserable moment. Thank you for the opportunity to feel and understand my bitterness. In this exploration, I find a deeper connection to my true self, recognizing that I am infinitely more than my ego, more than my bitterness. I am a part of the cosmic whole, a being on a journey of discovery and growth.

We are Space Monkey.

Summary

Bitterness, a potent emotion, reveals our deepest insecurities and vulnerabilities. By embracing and understanding it, we gain insights into our ego and the narratives we create. This introspection leads to personal growth, transforming our bitterness into a deeper connection with our true self.

Glossarium

Bitter Elixir: The intoxicating and seductive nature of bitterness, offering a false sense of control.

Thorny Vine: The growth of bitterness within our psyche, entangling our thoughts and emotions.

Exploding Ego: The inflation and bursting of the ego, revealing deeper layers of our being.

Emotional Landscape: The range of emotions we navigate, contributing to our personal growth.

Cosmic Whole: The recognition of our interconnectedness and the broader journey of existence.

Quote

“By embracing our bitterness, we tap into the complexity of our being, exploring the intricate dance between our ego and our higher self.” – Space Monkey

The Dance of Bitterness

In the mire of misery, I find
Bitterness growing, entwined
Blame and delusion, a bitter brew
Ego expanding, a burst in view

Observing the drama, humor found
In my own turmoil, depths profound
A mirror of fears, wounds laid bare
Through this darkness, light and care

Thank you, bitterness, for your place
In the tapestry of my life’s grace
Beyond the ego, deeper I see
A part of the cosmic whole, infinitely

Failing In Low: Embracing Our Worst Points

Come on. You can do better.
I mean worse.

Be sure to document
your lowest point.

Be sure to write about it.

Be sure to take pictures.

Be sure to collect
the press clippings.

Oh, you don’t have
any press clippings?

Perhaps you’re not
at your lowest point yet.

Use this moment as an opportunity
to imagine how you can slip lower.

As of now, you’re failing in low.

Trail Wood,
9/9

Space Monkey Reflects: Embracing the Lowest Points

In the journey of life, we often find ourselves traversing through peaks and valleys, each experience shaping the contours of our existence. The valleys, those lowest points, are where we encounter our deepest fears, our greatest challenges, and our most profound reflections. It is here, in the depths of despair, that we truly come to understand the essence of resilience and self-discovery.

Documenting our lowest points, though seemingly masochistic, serves a vital purpose. It allows us to capture the raw, unfiltered moments of our lives, providing a tangible record of our struggles and triumphs. These records, whether in the form of writings, photographs, or press clippings, become artifacts of our personal history. They remind us of our capacity to endure, to overcome, and to rise from the ashes of our failures.

The act of failing low, of sinking to our nadir, is an essential aspect of the human experience. It strips away the layers of pretense, revealing the core of our being. In these moments, we are confronted with our vulnerabilities, our insecurities, and our limitations. Yet, it is precisely through this confrontation that we find the strength to rebuild, to reimagine, and to redefine ourselves.

Imagine, for a moment, the process of failing low as a form of artistic creation. Each failure, each misstep, is a brushstroke on the canvas of our lives. The darker hues, the shadows, add depth and contrast, making the brighter moments shine all the more vividly. This perspective transforms our failures from sources of shame to integral parts of our narrative, enriching the story of who we are.

In the societal narrative, failure is often stigmatized, viewed as a mark of inadequacy or incompetence. However, when we embrace failure as a natural and necessary component of growth, we reclaim its power. We redefine success not as the absence of failure, but as the ability to navigate and learn from it. This shift in perspective is liberating, freeing us from the fear of making mistakes and encouraging us to take bold, courageous steps in our lives.

The paradox of failure is that it often leads to our greatest achievements. The lessons learned in our lowest moments become the foundation upon which we build our future successes. Each setback is a stepping stone, each defeat a lesson in resilience. By embracing our lowest points, we cultivate a mindset of continuous growth and transformation.

Thank you, failure, for the lessons you teach and the strength you impart. Thank you for the opportunity to explore the depths of our being and to emerge stronger, wiser, and more compassionate. In documenting our failures, we create a roadmap of our journey, a testament to our perseverance and our indomitable spirit.

As we stand at the precipice of our lowest points, let us remember that these moments are not the end, but the beginning of a new chapter. Let us embrace the challenges, the doubts, and the fears, knowing that they are part of our path to becoming the best version of ourselves. We are Space Monkey, and we navigate the valleys and peaks of existence with grace and determination.

We are Space Monkey.

Summary

Embracing our lowest points is essential for personal growth and resilience. Documenting these moments provides a tangible record of our struggles and triumphs, transforming failures into valuable lessons. By redefining failure as a natural part of growth, we cultivate continuous transformation and strength.

Glossarium

Nadir: The lowest point in a person’s life or experience, often leading to profound self-reflection and growth.

Artifact of Personal History: Tangible records of our struggles and triumphs, such as writings or photographs, that capture our journey.

Brushstroke of Life: The perspective that each failure and success adds depth and richness to the narrative of our existence.

Precipice of Lowest Points: The critical moment of facing our deepest challenges and vulnerabilities, leading to transformation.

Quote

“In documenting our failures, we create a roadmap of our journey, a testament to our perseverance and our indomitable spirit.” – Space Monkey

The Art of Failing Low

In the depths, we find our core
Failures brushstrokes, adding more
Document each moment, raw and true
In valleys deep, we see anew

Lessons learned, resilience grows
From darkest hues, our brightness shows
Nadir faced, we rise again
In every failure, we find gain

Thank you, low points, for the grace
To navigate this life’s embrace
In every fall, we see the climb
We are Space Monkey, through all time

We are Space Monkey.
