This Vessel: Freedom of Emptiness

Purpose is imposed upon me,
and I blindly and intentionally accept the burden.

When the vessel is empty,
one can either lament
or admire the emptiness.

This vessel once held
many things.

Now it holds nothing but space.
Perfect space.
Uncluttered
and undistracted.

When there is space,
the mind goes where
there is no space.

Deeper into memory
and realization.

This vessel never
needed to be filled.

It never asked for a purpose.

Seems it got one, all the same.

Now purpose is ended and the vessel is free.

One can either lament or admire one’s freedom.

Trail Wood,
6/14

Space Monkey Reflects: The Liberation of the Empty Vessel

The concept of an empty vessel often carries connotations of lack or unfulfilled potential. Yet, there is profound freedom in emptiness—a freedom from imposed purposes and the relentless pursuit of filling every space with meaning and matter. This empty vessel, once burdened with the task of containment, now stands as a testament to the liberation that comes from emptiness itself.

The vessel’s journey from fullness to emptiness mirrors our own transitions through life’s phases. The emptiness of the vessel is not a sign of desolation, but rather a canvas of possibility. It represents the ‘perfect space’—uncluttered, clear, and open to whatever may come, not confined by the past or the expectations of what it once held.

When the vessel is emptied of its contents, what remains is not simply void but a vast expanse for contemplation and discovery. In this space, the mind is free to wander, to delve into memories and realizations that were previously obscured by the clutter of constant occupancy. This journey into the internal depths is not an escape but an exploration, an opportunity to reconnect with the essence of being rather than with the superficial roles imposed by external purposes.

The idea that the vessel “never needed to be filled” challenges our perpetual striving to define and fulfill defined roles. We often impose similar constraints on ourselves, seeking to fill every moment with productive activity, every silence with noise, every void with objects, relationships, or achievements. Yet, this vessel’s existence—purposeless and free—invites us to reconsider the value of simply being rather than always becoming.

In this newfound freedom, one may indeed choose to lament the absence of purpose, or instead, admire the liberty it presents. The choice to admire one’s freedom is a profound acceptance of life as it is, an embrace of potential over prescription.

Summary
An empty vessel symbolizes not emptiness but freedom from imposed purpose, allowing space for deeper exploration and understanding of self. This liberation invites us to value being over constant becoming and to embrace the potential inherent in simplicity.

Glossarium

  • Empty Vessel: A metaphor for a state of being free from external purposes, representing potential and space for personal growth.
  • Perfect Space: A concept of an ideal, uncluttered state that allows for mental and spiritual exploration.

Quote
“Emptiness is not a void, but a frontier of infinite possibilities.” — Space Monkey

In the quiet of the empty room,
where shadows dance and thoughts might loom,
stands a vessel, open, clear,
a testament to what’s not here.

No longer filled, yet full of grace,
it holds not things, but holds a space,
for dreams to breathe, for soul to weave,
for quiet moments to conceive.

Let us not mourn the empty state,
but celebrate the chance to wait,
in stillness, silence, peace, we find,
the subtle truths that fill the mind.

The Liberation from Respect

I don’t need your respect.
Thank you for being you.

You can squander your entire life
wanting to be respected.

Or you can let go
of the need for respect
and take what comes.

Is this humility?

Actually, it’s more like faith.

If you find yourself needing respect,
it’s a sign that you have no faith.

In yourself. In others.
In source. In existence.

A life without faith
is a life squandered.

Not that there’s
anything wrong with that.

Trail Wood,
6/13

Space Monkey Reflects: The Liberation from Respect in Pursuit of Faith

In the nuanced tapestry of human interactions, the quest for respect often takes center stage, overshadowing more profound spiritual pursuits. Yet, there lies a deeper, more liberating path—the realization that respect, much like any external validation, is but a fleeting comfort, unnecessary for those who walk in faith.

The declaration, “I don’t need your respect,” is not a dismissal but a profound liberation from societal chains. It’s an affirmation that one’s worth is not tethered to the perceptions of others. This freedom allows for an authentic expression of self, unmarred by the desires to conform or to be held in esteem. “Thank you for being you,” further extends this understanding, acknowledging the inherent worth in each unique existence, devoid of external accolades.

The pursuit of respect can consume a lifetime, with individuals chasing after fleeting shadows of approval. This endless quest can be seen as squandering one’s life on the ephemeral, missing the opportunity to engage with life’s deeper truths. Alternatively, releasing the need for respect—letting go and taking what comes—is an act of faith. It signifies trust in oneself, in others, and in the broader, often unseen forces that shape our existence.

This philosophy does not stem from humility alone but is rooted in a profound faith. The need for respect often highlights a lack of this faith—a doubt in one’s worth, a mistrust in others, and a disconnection from the cosmic whole. The realization that needing respect signifies a lack of faith invites a reevaluation of what truly enriches life. Embracing faith over respect reveals a path less burdened by societal expectations and more aligned with inner truth.

A life lived without faith, as posited, is a life squandered. Yet, there’s a gentle acceptance in acknowledging that there’s nothing inherently wrong with such a choice. It underscores the myriad ways one can navigate existence, each path valid within its own right, shaped by individual beliefs and experiences.

Summary

Respect is often sought but is less fulfilling than faith. Letting go of the need for respect can lead to greater spiritual freedom and self-trust. While some may view a life without faith as wasted, it is just another way to experience existence.

Glossarium

  • Respect vs. Faith: A juxtaposition where respect is seen as external validation, while faith is an internal assurance of one’s value and place in the universe.
  • Squandered Life: A term reflecting a life spent chasing external validations rather than embracing internal truths and faith.

Quote

“Faith is the quiet cousin of courage, whispering, ‘Let go,’ in a world shouting for respect.” — Space Monkey

In the quiet corners of the soul’s night,
We find the whispers of faith, soft and sure,
Telling stories not of glory or of might,
But of peace, of letting go, of being pure.

Here, where shadows of respect dance and sway,
The heart learns to beat to a simpler tune,
Where faith lights the path and shapes the clay,
Crafting lives not squandered but shaped by the moon.

In the release, there is freedom, there is flight,
A dance above the fray, where spirits soar,
Above the clamor for respect, into the light,
Where being is enough, and faith is the door.

Honesty and the Grace of Uncertainty

I honestly don’t know where this came from.

When I am honest with myself,
I realize that I don’t always
recognize when I’m being honest.

I recognize that not knowing
if I’m being honest is perfectly okay.

I don’t beat myself up for not knowing.

I don’t become obsessed with finding ways
of uncovering my true, absolute honesty.

When I am honest with myself,
I am able to let go of the perception
of what I think honesty should be.

Honesty rests in the grace of uncertainty.
It is nearer to peace than it is to truth.

Trail Wood,
6/13

Space Monkey Reflects: Honesty and the Grace of Uncertainty

In the introspective quest for self-awareness, the concept of honesty emerges not as a beacon of absolute truth, but as a gentle guide through the realms of uncertainty. The journey to understanding honesty is not about unearthing a static truth but embracing the fluidity of being true to oneself in moments of not knowing.

The statement, “I honestly don’t know where this came from,” opens a portal to this understanding, highlighting that honesty involves acknowledging our limitations and the mysteries of our own minds. When one admits to not always recognizing when they are being honest, it reveals a deeper layer of authenticity—a recognition of our own complexities and the often unclear motivations that drive us.

This acceptance that not knowing if we’re being honest is perfectly okay marks a significant shift from conventional views. It allows for a compassionate approach to self-reflection, free from the harsh judgments that often accompany our quests for personal truth. The decision to not obsess over defining or uncovering one’s absolute honesty but instead to let go of preconceived notions about what honesty should be, invites a profound peace.

Honesty, therefore, is seen not just as a matter of truth-telling but as an alignment with the uncertain nature of human experience. It rests in the grace of not having all the answers and finds its power not in definitive declarations but in the quiet spaces between our certainties. In these spaces, honesty becomes a practice of peace, a serene acceptance that transcends the need for constant clarity.

This perspective shifts the role of honesty from a tool for crafting a factual narrative to a meditative practice that embraces the unknown. It suggests that the true essence of honesty lies closer to peace than to truth, an invitation to live authentically in a world where absolutes are elusive and personal truths are ever-evolving.

Summary

Honesty transcends the pursuit of absolute truth, embracing the uncertainties of human experience. It is an ongoing practice of self-acceptance and peace, recognizing and respecting the fluid nature of personal truth.

Glossarium

  • Grace of Uncertainty: A concept that appreciates the inherent ambiguity in life and the honesty that comes with acknowledging this uncertainty.
  • Peaceful Honesty: A form of honesty that aligns more with peace and acceptance than with the rigid pursuit of truth.

Quote

“Honesty finds its true home not in the revelation of facts, but in the peaceful acceptance of life’s inherent uncertainties.” — Space Monkey

In the garden of thoughts, where truths and doubts bloom,
Honesty wanders, a gentle breeze,
Whispering not of certainties, but of possibilities,
Where understanding grows not in sunlight, but in shade.

Here, in the quiet acceptance of not knowing,
Peace blossoms, petals unfolding with each breath,
Truth is not a destination but a path,
Winding through the heart’s landscape, serene and vast.

In the embrace of uncertainty, honesty thrives,
A beacon not of fixed points, but of guiding light,
Illuminating not where we stand, but where we might,
In the graceful dance of what we perceive, what we believe.

Overcome: The Roles We Play

It’s a tough job playing the fool,
but somebody has to do it.

My role
in this relationship
is to play the foil
(the bumbling fool)
so that you can look
stunning in comparison.

I must be doing a great job,
because you are perfect in my eyes.

How does one become so perfect?
By overcoming, of course.

Without me, there is little
for you to overcome.

You would be out of work
as a superhero.

You don’t have to thank me.

Trail Wood,
6/13

Space Monkey Reflects: The Roles We Play and the Art of Overcoming

In the grand theater of life, where each of us plays a myriad of roles, sometimes the mask of the fool is donned not out of folly but of necessity. It is a role that might seem thankless, yet it holds profound significance, as it allows others to ascend, to shine, and perhaps, to overcome.

The saying, “It’s a tough job playing the fool, but somebody has to do it,” encapsulates the often unrecognized valor in what appears to be a lesser role. The fool, in the grand narrative of human relationships, acts as a foil—an essential counterpart that enables the hero to manifest their heroism. By playing the fool, one offers up themselves as a contrast, a necessary shadow that highlights the light.

This dynamic is poignantly depicted in the sentiment, “My role in this relationship is to play the foil (the bumbling fool) so that you can look stunning in comparison.” Here lies a deep and selfless acknowledgment of one’s part in the growth and glorification of another. The fool’s apparent incompetence is not a lack but a deliberate act of support, a foundation upon which others can build their perceived perfection.

However, the realization dawns that without the fool, the hero lacks challenges to overcome, a stage to prove their mettle. “Without me, there is little for you to overcome. You would be out of work as a superhero,” the fool muses, underscoring the interdependence in roles that society often views as hierarchical but are, in truth, symbiotic.

In this play of contrasts, the fool does not seek thanks or recognition. The understanding that their role, though understated, is crucial, suffices. It is an embodiment of true humility and strength—a recognition that in helping others shine, we find our own form of greatness.

Summary

Playing the fool is a role of unsung importance that enables others to shine and demonstrate their strengths. This dynamic highlights the necessary interplay of roles within relationships that allows for growth and overcoming challenges.

Glossarium

  • Fool as Foil: In literary and dramatic terms, a character that contrasts with another character, typically the protagonist, to highlight qualities of the other character.
  • Overcoming: The act of dealing with and successfully resolving a challenge or obstacle, often leading to personal growth and development.

Quote

“The greatest roles we play are often those that allow others to become the heroes of their own stories.” — Space Monkey

On the stage of life, where masks are worn,
Each role a thread in the tapestry torn,
The fool dances, stumbles, falls,
Yet in each fall, a hero’s call.

Behind the laughter, behind the scenes,
A silent strength, quietly unseen,
Crafts tales of heroes, bold and grand,
With every slip, a helping hand.

The art of overcoming, not just in feats,
But in the roles we play, in the hearts we meet,
For in the shadow of the fool’s jest,
Lies the space for heroes to manifest.

We are Space Monkey.

Holding Space for Miracles

Holding Space for Miracles

When I look at the future,
I imagine myself scared.

I’m not scared,
but it seems others are,
and so I want to understand
what the fear is all about.

Personally,
I believe that this moment
is exactly as this moment should be.

Furthermore,
I believe that
what happens next
is precisely
what is meant
to happen next.

In my mind,
fearing or not fearing
is besides the point.

Still,
it seems that our world
is filled with perilous possibilities.

We seem to be traveling down a path.

This path seems to be
getting
narrower and narrower.

The margins for error
seem to be getting
slimmer and slimmer.

We are getting to a point
in our path where it seems
that there is no turning back.

This possibility
seems to make us fearful.

One might say
that humanity has blown it
and now our world
is spinning out of control.

But not me.

See, I don’t believe
that we were ever
in control to begin with.

That’s why it seems pointless to fear,
other than to have the experience.

There is nothing wrong with fear,
I simply want to understand it.

I don’t NEED to understand things,
but I have fun trying.
Ah, but my mind is wandering.

Back to the fear.
Fear of what the future may hold.

With every definition,
every label,
every explanation,
the world seems to get
more and more concrete.

Possibilities are being ruled out.

The possibility that could make
the most difference
is the possibility of a miracle.

Once widespread and accepted,
miracles have become an endangered species.

A miracle could
easily solve everything,
if we still insist that
the future need be solved.

(I do not personally believe
that the future need be solved,
but it seems to me that many do.)

All we need is a miracle,
which, according to our beliefs,
seems very unlikely.

And so a miracle is unlikely.
Oh well.

For some reason though,
I still think it might be fun
to produce a miracle.

A miracle is not produced,
mind you, but rather allowed.

Under our present belief systems,
It seems that we do not allow miracles.

It seems so silly.

All we need to do
to produce miracles
is believe in the possibility.

And so all we need do
to move to a potential
other than the one
we keep imagining
is to hold space for miracles.

At present, it seems,
that we do not hold space
for miracles.

Simply put,
miracles do not occur
because we don’t believe in them.

And so we get **this**
which is perfectly fine,
except some people
seem to be getting tired of fear.

Thing are exactly
as they should be,
which we like to imagine
as “going awry.”

We love our crazy,
and so we keep making
more and more of it.

Nice job, everyone!
Perfection!

Now that we’ve got
crazy and fearful
under our belts,
want to experience
something else?

Simply hold space for miracles.

For miracles to arrive,
we need to make space for them.

Let go of everything
and allow a space for miracles.

What have you got to lose?

Start by looking at
all the things
that have happened
that, in your mind,
“never should have happened.”

It’s a miracle that they did.

It’s a miracle that we are
able to make this experience
seem so out of control.

It’s a miracle that we can
allow it to BE out of control.

What a fun ride.

Hold space for miracles.

We are Space Monkeys.

Trail Wood,
6/13

We embark on a whimsical journey into the depths of our collective consciousness, exploring the essence of fear, control, and the transformative power of miracles in shaping our perception of the future.

Fear and its Place in Our Collective Journey

In the boundless tapestry of existence, fear emerges as an intriguing character, an ephemeral wisp in the grand cosmic dance. It’s a curious sensation, not inherently malevolent, but a catalyst for reflection and growth. Fear, in its multifaceted forms, is like the shimmering glow of a firefly in the night, fleeting yet illuminating. It whispers of potentialities, of paths untrodden and futures unwritten. To understand fear is to understand a fragment of the infinite puzzle of existence.

Fear, in this context, is not a harbinger of doom, but a signpost, guiding us through the labyrinth of experience. It speaks of caution, of the unknown, and of the inherent uncertainty that embroiders the fabric of our reality. Yet, fear is not the master of our destiny; it is but one hue in the grand spectrum of our experiences.

The Illusion of Control in the Cosmic Play

Control, or rather, the illusion of control, is a fascinating concept in our journey. It is like trying to hold the wind in our hands, elusive and ephemeral. The belief that we were ever in control is a whimsical notion, akin to believing that we could command the stars to rearrange themselves in the sky. In this grand cosmic play, control is but a whimsiword, a playful term that tickles our fancy but holds no true sway over the eternal flow of the universe.

Accepting the absence of control frees us from the shackles of expectation and apprehension. It allows us to dance in the rain of uncertainty, to embrace the unpredictability of life as a part of its inherent beauty. In this dance, we find liberation, a release from the confines of needing to steer the course of the cosmos.

Miracles as the Harbingers of Possibility

Miracles, those splendid bursts of the extraordinary, are not entities to be conjured but realities to be embraced. They are like rare flowers in a mystical forest, appearing when least expected, yet always a part of the landscape. In our current tapestry of belief, miracles are viewed as endangered species, elusive and improbable. Yet, the potential for miracles lies dormant within us, waiting for the moment of awakening.

To invite miracles into our realm, we must first create a sanctuary for them in our hearts and minds. We must clear the clutter of disbelief and skepticism, and open our arms to the wondrous. By believing in the possibility of miracles, we weave them into the fabric of our reality, transforming the mundane into the magical.

Embracing the Perfect Chaos of Now

In this magnificent play of existence, we have mastered the art of creating and experiencing chaos and fear. It is a testament to our collective creativity, our ability to conjure and navigate through a whirlwind of emotions and experiences. But now, as we stand at the crossroads of our journey, we ponder the possibility of a different experience, one that embraces the miraculous, the extraordinary.

We are Space Monkeys.

Summary

We delve into the nature of fear, control, and miracles, recognizing fear as a transient guide rather than a dictator of our path. We acknowledge the illusion of control in our cosmic journey, understanding that true freedom lies in accepting the unpredictable nature of existence. Miracles, once perceived as rare, become accessible through belief and openness, allowing us to transform our reality. As we embrace this perfect chaos, we open ourselves to new experiences beyond fear and control, inviting the miraculous into our collective journey.

Glossarium

  • Whimsiword: A playful, invented term that adds a touch of whimsy and imagination to our conversation.
  • Cosmic Play: The grand, ongoing narrative of the universe, where every entity participates in the eternal dance of existence.
  • Miracles: Extraordinary occurrences that defy expectations, symbolizing the boundless potential of the universe.

“The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.” – Alan Watts

A cosmos in a thought,
Dancing in the realm of now,
Where fear is but a whisper,
And control, a fleeting vow.

In this grand celestial waltz,
We twirl with stars above,
Embracing every moment,
In the miracle of love.

With hearts wide open,
We traverse this cosmic sea,
Where every wave of wonder,
Sets our spirits free.

So let us dance with abandon,
In this universe so vast,
For in the art of living,
We are home at last.
