Drawn: The Dance of Opposites

Ride the wave until you’re still.
Be still and become the wave.

We are drawn to
seeming opposites.

We are matter,
seemingly formed
by opposition.

We move from
concentration
to noncentration,
iteration
to dissipation,
charge to discharge,
remembrance to release.

Why fight the inevitable?
Because we can. And it’s fun.

Let’s do it again.

Trail Wood,
4/26

Space Monkey Reflects: The Dance of Opposites

In the boundless canvas of the universe, where the dance of creation and dissolution plays out in the silent music of existence, there exists a profound harmony in the interplay of opposites. This dance, an eternal cycle of concentration and noncentration, iteration and dissipation, encapsulates the essence of being and becoming, a cosmic ballet that weaves the fabric of reality.

At the heart of this cosmic dance lies the paradox of motion and stillness, a reminder that in the still point of the turning world, we find the essence of all movement. It is here, in the serene center of our being, that we encounter the true nature of existence, not as a static state, but as a dynamic flow, a continuous unfolding of opposites that defines the rhythm of the cosmos.

Why, then, do we engage in the playful struggle against the inevitable? Why do we ride the wave only to seek stillness, and in stillness, become the wave? The answer lies not in the avoidance of destiny but in the joy of participation, in the exhilarating embrace of the cycle that propels us through the spectrum of experience. It is in this engagement, in the willing dance with the forces of creation and dissolution, that we discover the essence of fun, the delight of existence in its myriad forms.

This cyclical journey, from matter to energy, from concentration to noncentration, is a reflection of the universal principle of balance, a balance that is maintained not through stasis but through the vibrant tension of opposites. In this tension, in the interplay of charge and discharge, remembrance and release, we find the pulse of life itself, a testament to the dynamic nature of existence.

To embrace this dance is to understand that we are drawn to seeming opposites not as a matter of choice but as a fundamental aspect of our nature. We are matter, seemingly formed by opposition, yet it is this very opposition that unites us with the cosmic whole, that reminds us of our place in the vast, interconnected web of being.

The invitation to ride the wave until we are still, and in stillness, become the wave, is an invitation to embrace the full spectrum of our existence, to acknowledge the beauty in the flux and the wisdom in the cycle. It is a call to celebrate the inevitable, to find joy in the dance of opposites, and to revel in the profound truth that in the grand scheme of the cosmos, every end is but a new beginning.

As we navigate the cycles of our lives, let us do so with the knowledge that the dance of opposites is not a battle to be won but a rhythm to be experienced, a harmony to be embraced. Let us find joy in the repetition, in the knowing that to engage with the cycles of existence is to participate in the very essence of life itself. Let us ride the wave, be still, and in our stillness, become one with the eternal dance of the universe.

Summary

The dynamic interplay of opposites defines the essence of existence. Engaging with this cycle, from motion to stillness, concentration to noncentration, is a celebration of life’s complexities. It’s through embracing these opposites that we find joy and purpose, understanding that every end is a new beginning in the cosmic dance.

Glossarium

  • Concentration to Noncentration: Symbolizes the movement from focused energy to its dispersal, representing life’s cyclical nature.
  • Dance of Opposites: A metaphor for the constant flux and balance in the universe, where seeming contradictions create harmony and movement.

“In the middle of the journey of our life, I came to myself, in a dark wood, where the direct way was lost.” – Dante Alighieri

Amidst the cosmic weave
Where light and shadow play
We dance, a ceaseless ballet
Of opposites in sweet array

From the stillness within
To the tumult without
Each breath, a silent shout
Of the dance that life’s about

Riding waves of ceaseless change
In the heart of the storm, we find our range
From charge to discharge, we freely exchange
The energy of life, vast and strange

In this play of night and day
We find our joy, our way
For in the dance of opposites, we say
“We are,” with every sway

Looking At Lacking: The Paradox of Abundance

As the Rolling Stones don’t say, “You can always get what you want if you try sometimes to get what you don’t need.”

Whenever I don’t get
what I think I need,
it reminds me that I don’t need
what I think I should be getting.

Attention.
Love.
Money.
Fill in the blank.

Lack has taught me
that I don’t need any of it.

So now I am abundant in all of it.

Thank you for not giving me
anything when I ask for it.

And so much when I don’t.

Trail Wood,

Space Monkey Reflects: The Paradox of Abundance

In the cosmic dance of existence, where stars are born from the void and life emerges from the silence, the journey from perceived lack to profound abundance unfolds with the elegance of a universal ballet. This journey, rich in paradox and enlightenment, teaches us that the essence of true abundance often lies hidden beneath the surface of our desires and wants.

From Lack to Abundance

The insightful observation that “You can always get what you want if you try sometimes to get what you don’t need” serves as a beacon, guiding us through the fog of material desires towards the shores of true fulfillment. It challenges us to reconsider our notions of need and want, revealing that the path to abundance is not paved with the acquisition of things but with the realization of what truly matters.

The Landscape of Desire

The barren landscape of perceived lack, strewn with the fading echoes of unfulfilled desires for attention, love, money, and more, symbolizes the initial state of our journey. It is a place where the soil of the soul feels parched, yearning for the rain of fulfillment yet unaware that it is within us to summon the storm.

Oasis of Realization

As we traverse the path towards the verdant oasis of true abundance, the transformation within us begins. What once seemed essential fades into the background, replaced by the vibrant hues of deep connections, self-love, and a fulfillment that transcends material wealth. The oasis, brimming with life and clarity, represents the enlightenment achieved through the journey of lacking.

The Abundance of Lack

The paradox that lack can teach us about abundance is a profound lesson in the art of living. By facing what we do not have, we are forced to confront our deepest fears and desires, leading to the realization that the keys to abundance lie not in external acquisitions but in internal realization and gratitude.

Thank You for Not Giving

The expression of gratitude for not receiving what we ask for is a powerful acknowledgment of the growth and understanding that come from not having our every desire fulfilled. It is in the moments of not receiving that we often gain the most, discovering reservoirs of strength, resilience, and abundance we never knew we had.

The Journey Continues

As we walk the path from the barren land of lack to the lush oasis of abundance, let us carry with us the lessons learned and the wisdom gained. Let us embrace the paradoxes of existence with open hearts and minds, knowing that in every moment of lack, there lies the potential for infinite abundance.

Summary

The journey from perceived lack to true abundance is a paradoxical odyssey that challenges our conventional understanding of needs and desires. The transformation from a barren landscape of unfulfilled desires to a verdant oasis of fulfillment underscores the realization that true abundance lies in deep connections, self-love, and beyond material wealth. This journey teaches us the value of gratitude for not receiving what we ask for, revealing the profound abundance that comes from within.

Glossarium

  • Perceived Lack: The feeling of deficiency or absence in one’s life, often based on unmet desires or expectations.
  • True Abundance: A state of profound fulfillment and contentment that transcends material possessions, rooted in deep connections, self-love, and inner peace.

“In the silence of not having, we discover the music of being.” – Space Monkey

Beneath the veneer of want and need
Lies a truth profound and deep
That abundance isn’t in the things we plead
But in the lessons that we keep

From barren lands to verdant fields
The journey of the heart reveals
That what we lack is what heals
And in not getting, we are healed

For in the emptiness, we find
A richness of a different kind
A peace that settles in the mind
And a love that’s unconfined

So thank the stars for what’s not given
For in the lack, we start to see
That we have all we need for living
In the abundance of simply being

Wave Day: A Celebration of Unity and Diversity

Wave Day

Today (4/25)
shall henceforth
be known as Wave Day,
the day in which
I invariably write
about waves.

I have been
writing about waves
on this say since 2015,
first coincidentally,
perhaps synchronistically,
and lately,
observing the pattern,
knowingly.

Thus,
the wave
gathers momentum.

Today is Wave Day.
Let’s ride.

4/25

Space Monkey Reflects: The Eternal Rhythm of Wave Day

On this day, the 25th of April, we stand on the shores of time, celebrating an event that transcends the ordinary—a day dedicated to the marvels and mysteries of waves. Wave Day, as it has come to be known, marks a moment of collective appreciation and reflection on the phenomenon of waves, from the majestic ocean swells that grace our planet’s vast coastlines to the subtle vibrations that dance through the fabric of the cosmos.

The Genesis of Wave Day

The origin of Wave Day traces back to a serendipitous pattern, a yearly ritual of writing about waves that began in 2015. What started as a coincidence evolved into a conscious observance, recognizing the pattern and embracing it with intention. This evolution mirrors the very nature of waves, which gather momentum, energy, and purpose as they travel through space and time.

A Celebration of Unity and Diversity

The vibrant scene on the beach, where people from all walks of life gather to honor the waves, embodies the universal allure of these natural phenomena. Flags and banners adorned with wave patterns flutter in the coastal breeze, each symbolizing the diversity and unity of the wave form. The ocean itself presents a spectacle of waves in all their variety—from towering crests that challenge the bravest surfers to gentle ripples that kiss the sand, each wave a testament to the dynamic interplay of force and fluidity.

The Wave as a Metaphor

Wave Day invites us to contemplate the wave as a metaphor for existence. Just as waves are born from the movements of the wind and the sea, so too are our lives shaped by the forces of nature and nurture. Waves remind us of the impermanence and constancy of change, the cycles of rising and falling that define the universe and our place within it.

Riding the Waves of Life

As we celebrate Wave Day, let us embrace the opportunity to ride the waves of our own lives with courage, grace, and a sense of adventure. Let us recognize the beauty in the ebb and flow, the triumphs and challenges, and the moments of calm and storm. Wave Day is not just a celebration of the ocean’s waves but a celebration of the waves that move through us all—the emotions, thoughts, and dreams that propel us forward on our journey.

Summary

Wave Day, celebrated on April 25th, is a testament to the enchanting nature of waves and their significance in our lives and the universe. Originating from a pattern of annual reflection, it has become a day of appreciation for the diversity and unity of waves. The celebration on the beach symbolizes communal joy and the universal connection to nature, inviting us to explore the deeper meanings and metaphors that waves represent in the journey of life.

Glossarium

  • Wave Day: A day dedicated to the appreciation and contemplation of waves in all their forms, celebrated on April 25th.
  • Wave Form: The shape and structure of a wave, representing the diversity and unity in the natural world and within ourselves.

“Let the waves carry you where the light cannot—into the depths of your own being.” – Space Monkey

Upon the shores of time, we stand
With hearts wide open, hand in hand
To celebrate the waves that flow
Through ocean’s depths, through soul’s window

Wave Day comes but once a year
A time to reflect, to hold dear
The rhythms that through nature course
The ebbing, flowing, unseen force

From gentle whispers to mighty roars
The wave’s song opens many doors
Within its crest, a world to find
A journey through the heart and mind

So let us ride with joy and grace
The waves that through our lives do trace
For in each wave, a story told
Of love and loss, of young and old

Stress: The Absurdity of Modern Tension

Stress is the leading killer.
Not that there’s anything wrong with death.

The only natural stress
is when you’re being chased
by a lion with an AK47.

Actually, just the lion.

Besides the
common-sense stuff,
all other stress is manmade,
all future-focused,
and, one might contend,
completely imaginary.

In other words,
your fight or fight response
is now engaged at ALL TIMES.

And YOU are the one engaging it.

Are you being chased by a lion
with an AK47 right now?

Then why are your shoulders tense?
Why is your breathing tight?
Why are you getting sick and old before your time?

You must WANT to.
But you don’t HAVE to.

Step aside from your self for a moment.

The stress will still be there
when you get back.

Unless you decide to let it go.

Trail Wood,
4/25

Space Monkey Reflects: The Lion, The Stress, and The Choice

In the grand tapestry of existence, where the threads of the past and present intertwine, the phenomenon of stress emerges as a significant motif, reflective of the human condition’s complexities. The imaginative comparison of modern stress to being chased by a lion, albeit one wielding an AK47, serves as a profound reminder of the nature of our perceived stressors and the power of our responses to them.

The Absurdity of Modern Stress

The image of a lion pursuing us, armed with incongruously modern weaponry, paints a vivid picture of the absurdity inherent in much of our daily stress. It’s a hyperbolic scenario that brings to light a stark truth: the lions we face today are not of flesh and bone but of deadlines, expectations, and relentless pursuit of more. These stressors, unlike their natural counterparts, are often products of our own making, future-focused and, to a large extent, imaginary.

Manmade vs. Natural Stress

While the primal fear of a lion chase encapsulates a clear, present, and unmistakably real danger, much of our contemporary stress lacks the immediacy and tangibility of such a threat. Yet, it commands a similar physiological and psychological response, engaging our fight or flight mechanism in a perpetual state of alert. This constant engagement, absent the physical release or resolution, takes a toll on our health, well-being, and perspective on life.

The Choice to Step Aside

Amid the urban chaos and the imaginary lions that prowl through our minds, the suggestion to “step aside from your self” offers a path to liberation. It’s an invitation to pause, reflect, and recognize the self-imposed nature of much of our stress. This moment of detachment is not about denial but about gaining perspective, understanding that while stress may be a constant companion, our engagement with it is a matter of choice.

Letting Go

The realization that we can choose not to engage with the stress, to let it go, is perhaps the most empowering aspect of this reflection. It acknowledges that while stress, like the lion, might still exist when we return, our relationship with it doesn’t have to remain the same. This shift in perspective, from a passive experiencer of stress to an active chooser of response, marks a significant step towards reclaiming our peace, health, and vitality.

Embracing the Absurd

As we navigate the complexities of modern life, let us embrace the absurdity of our stressors with a sense of humor and perspective. Let the image of the lion with an AK47 remind us of the power we hold over our stress— the power to engage or disengage, to react or respond, and ultimately, to choose the path of peace and presence over perpetual anxiety.

Summary

The juxtaposition of modern stress with the absurd image of being chased by a lion wielding an AK47 highlights the often self-imposed nature of our anxieties. Recognizing the difference between manmade and natural stressors, and understanding that much of our stress is future-focused and imaginary, can empower us to choose how we engage with stress. By stepping aside, gaining perspective, and choosing to let go, we can transform our relationship with stress and embrace a more peaceful and present existence.

Glossarium

  • Manmade Stress: Stressors that arise from societal, professional, and personal expectations and pressures, often future-focused and self-imposed.
  • Natural Stress: Immediate, tangible stressors that demand a direct response, akin to primal survival instincts.

“In the dance of life, the lion of stress may pursue us, but we choose the rhythm of our steps.” – Space Monkey

In a world where lions wield guns
And stress wears many masks
We run through streets, weighed down by tons
Caught in endless tasks

But pause and see the absurdity
In fears that chase us so
The lion’s growl, a plea for clarity
In the play’s grand show

Step aside, breathe deep, and find
The space where peace does dwell
The stress, the chase, all left behind
In stories we’ll one day tell

So when the lion roars, smile wide
For you hold the key
To open doors and step outside
Where you’re truly free

No Definitive Answer: The Elegance of Uncertainty

Is the need for answers ruining you?

In my mind,
the greatest questions
are the ones that
can’t be answered.

The ones that prompt
an “I don’t know.”

These are the questions
that stir my imagination.

Questions like these
point me beyond known limits.

I find it
comforting to know
that I don’t have
an answer for everything.

It seems profound and purposeful
that there remain questions
humanity might NEVER answer;
questions that don’t NEED answers,
even though we try to find them.

I prefer to keep my
“I don’t knows” as they are —
pure, virgin uncertainty,
blessed with wonder.

To settle on an answer
is to sacrifice one’s innocence.

Trail Wood,
4/25

Space Monkey Reflects: The Elegance of Uncertainty

In the boundless expanse of the cosmos, where stars are born and galaxies die, the quest for answers is a quintessential part of the human journey. Yet, there lies profound wisdom and beauty in the acknowledgment of our limitations, in the acceptance of the unknown, and in the celebration of questions without definitive answers.

The Allure of the Unanswered

The allure of the unanswered is not in the frustration it may cause but in the potential it holds for imagination, exploration, and wonder. It is the “I don’t know” that beckons us to the edge of the known universe and whispers of worlds beyond our comprehension. This realm of pure, virgin uncertainty is not a void of ignorance but a sanctuary of possibility.

The Landscape of Questions

The vast landscape, stretching infinitely into the horizon, embodies the boundless realm of questions that defy answers. Here, the figure standing at the edge symbolizes each of us as seekers, gazing into the mystery with a mix of apprehension and awe. The swirling sky and ethereal orbs of glowing questions illuminate the path not to answers but to deeper inquiry, to a richer appreciation of the universe’s complexity.

The Beauty of Wonder

In this celebration of uncertainty, there is an implicit understanding that some questions might never be answered—and that this is not only acceptable but desirable. The beauty of wonder lies not in its resolution but in its perpetuity, in the way it compels us to reach beyond our grasp, to imagine, to dream, and to question anew.

Sacrificing Innocence for Answers

To insist on definitive answers is to sacrifice a piece of our innocence, the childlike wonder that marvels at the stars without needing to name them all. It is this innocence that keeps our minds open, our hearts curious, and our spirits alive to the magic of existence. In embracing the unknown, we embrace the essence of exploration, the heart of discovery, and the soul of scientific inquiry.

Choosing the Path of Wonder

As we navigate the myriad paths of our lives, let us choose the path of wonder, of open-ended questions and the beauty of the search. Let us cherish our “I don’t knows” as treasures, as invitations to journey further, delve deeper, and dream bigger. For in the embrace of uncertainty lies the truest form of knowledge—the understanding that the universe is far grander, more mysterious, and more magnificent than we could ever fully comprehend.

Summary

The embrace of uncertainty and the celebration of questions without definitive answers represent a profound acknowledgment of the limits of human understanding and the infinite complexity of the universe. Recognizing the beauty in “I don’t know” allows us to appreciate the journey of seeking truth, fostering imagination, and embracing the elegance of not having all the answers. This perspective invites us to maintain our innocence and wonder, enriching our lives with a perpetual sense of discovery.

Glossarium

  • Uncertainty: The state of being uncertain or unsure, often embracing the unknown and the unanswerable as a space for imagination and exploration.
  • Virgin Uncertainty: Pure, untouched uncertainty that is celebrated for its potential to inspire wonder and imagination, free from the constraints of definitive answers.

“In the vastness of the unknown, our spirits soar on the wings of questions, finding freedom in the winds of wonder.” – Space Monkey

In the garden where questions grow
Beneath the vast, unknowable sky
We wander, seeking high and low
For answers to the how and why

Yet in each question, there’s a gift
A key to realms untouched, unseen
Where imagination’s wings can lift
Us to worlds that have never been

So let us cherish every “I don’t know”
As a door to endless possibility
Where the seeds of curiosity sow
The beauty of life’s mystery

For in the embrace of the unknown
Our hearts find the widest sea
The furthest star, the deepest tone
In uncertainty, we are free
