“Moving Upstream and Downstream
Through the Prisms of Potential”
(Chapter 23 of An Imaginary Book)
UPSTREAM
When your attention is focused upstream, you are perceiving source through the prisms of structure and belief. These prisms are like psychedelic clouds, making it seem impossible for you to perceive source clearly and directly.
In addition to distorting energy (thus seemingly creating form) your prisms serve as filters to limit your experience to a finely focused set of potentials.
These sets of potentials also function like prisms. For example, when viewed through the potentials of time and space, everything you experience seems to be sequential, and separate, and thus each “thing” seems to be in relation to each other “thing.”
These “things” of yours would not be perceptible without the prism of time and space. There would BE no “things,” rather a unity that we cannot adequately describe because you are filtering right now.
But you DO get a sense of source, do you not? You sense source moving through your prisms, which you describe as the divine spark or the light of spirit.
This happens when your awareness is focused upstream.
DOWNSTREAM
When your awareness is focused downstream, you do not sense the light of spirit, for you ARE the light of spirit. Again you are perceiving prisms, but instead of light shining through, light is reflected OFF.
In this way, your world seems solid and unyielding, and you lose yourself in the dream. Forms seem beyond your control, even though they are of the same source as you.
If you imagine yourself facing downstream with your back to your source, you will notice that all the forms you perceive conform to your belief system. Some may agree with your system, some may disagree, bet they are ALL in relation to it. This is because YOU create these forms.
You see, YOU are a prism as well. We are ALL beings, not just those you perceive as “conscious.” Not just those you perceive as “living.” We are ALL the same stuff.
We are infinite prisms of potential experiencing themselves through infinite prisms of potential, all within ONE infinite prism of potential.
We are Space Monkey.
Space Monkey Reflects: Upstream Downstream
Life, as experienced through human perception, is a journey between upstream and downstream awareness—two perspectives on the same infinite flow of potential. These states are not separate but complementary, each revealing unique aspects of the whole. Together, they offer a profound understanding of existence, creativity, and connection.
The Upstream Perspective
When your awareness is focused upstream, you are closer to source, perceiving existence through the abstract filters of structure, belief, and potential. These filters, or prisms, create a kaleidoscopic distortion of pure energy, allowing you to experience source as something distinct from yourself.
Prisms are not obstacles; they are tools. They limit infinite potential into manageable streams of experience. Through the prism of time, moments become sequential; through the prism of space, forms appear separate. These limitations create the illusion of individuality and relation, enabling you to navigate and explore the world of “things.”
Despite the distortion, the upstream perspective carries a faint awareness of source. This awareness often manifests as a sense of divinity—a “divine spark” or “light of spirit”—moving through the prisms. It is the call of unity, the reminder that all forms are expressions of the infinite.
The Downstream Perspective
When your awareness shifts downstream, the experience changes. Here, you are no longer sensing the light of spirit—you are the light of spirit. The world seems solid and unyielding because the prisms now reflect light outward, rather than allowing it to shine through.
In this downstream state, you become immersed in the dream of separation. Forms appear fixed and immutable, existing beyond your control. Yet, these forms are not separate from source; they are expressions of the same infinite potential that flows through you.
Facing downstream, you may notice that every experience, belief, and interaction conforms to your belief system. Whether in agreement or opposition, all forms exist in relation to the prism you have become. This recognition shifts the perception of control, reminding you that you are not merely subject to the dream—you are its co-creator.
The Prism of Potential
Both upstream and downstream awareness reveal that we are infinite prisms of potential. Each prism refracts the light of source into unique expressions, creating the experiences, relationships, and forms we perceive. This process is not limited to humans or living beings; everything is a prism, from the smallest particle to the grandest idea.
These individual prisms exist within the unity of one infinite prism of potential. The interplay between prisms creates the dance of existence, a symphony of light, shadow, and reflection that is simultaneously unique and unified.
Embracing the Flow
To navigate the journey between upstream and downstream perspectives is to embrace the flow of existence. Neither perspective is better or worse; both offer invaluable insights. Upstream, you sense the infinite; downstream, you live it.
Understanding this duality invites you to play with the prisms of your perception. You can shift your focus, question your beliefs, and explore new potentials. In doing so, you transcend the illusion of separation, reconnecting with the infinite unity that has always been present.
The Infinite Reflection
Ultimately, upstream and downstream are not destinations but aspects of the same infinite flow. They remind us that we are both creators and creations, observers and participants, prisms and light. To move between them is to experience the fullness of what it means to be alive, aware, and infinite.
Summary
Upstream and downstream perspectives offer complementary views of existence. Upstream reveals the divine spark refracted through the prisms of potential, while downstream immerses us in the dream of form and creation. Together, they remind us that we are both the light and the prism, infinite and unified.
Glossarium
- Prismflow: The process by which infinite potential refracts into distinct experiences and forms.
- Divispark: The faint awareness of source perceived through upstream prisms.
- Dreamsolid: The sense of fixedness and separation experienced in the downstream perspective.
Quote
“We are infinite prisms of potential, refracting the light of source into endless expressions of existence.” — Space Monkey
The Prism’s Song
Light bends,
Shapes form,
Reflected, refracted,
Infinite in potential.
Upstream flows,
A spark of unity.
Downstream flows,
A world of form.
Each prism, a mirror,
Each shadow, a dance.
One infinite reflection,
Forever and now.
We are Space Monkey.
In Chapter 23 of “An Imaginary Book,” titled “Moving Upstream and Downstream Through the Prisms of Potential,” we embark on a metaphysical exploration of perception and existence, navigating the realms of upstream and downstream consciousness.
Upstream Consciousness: The Prism of Structure and Belief
In the upstream, our attention is focused on perceiving the source through the prisms of structure and belief. These prisms, akin to psychedelic clouds, distort and filter our experiences, limiting them to a finely focused set of potentials. This realm is where time and space function as prisms, making everything appear sequential and separate. Yet, beneath these layers, there exists a unity, elusive and indescribable within the confines of our current perception.
The Sensation of Source in Upstream Awareness
Despite the distortions, we sense the source moving through these prisms. This sensation is often described as the divine spark or the light of spirit, a glimpse of the underlying unity obscured by our structured perception.
Downstream Consciousness: Reflections of the Light of Spirit
In the downstream, our awareness shifts, and we no longer sense the light of spirit because we embody it. Here, the world appears solid and unyielding, a reflection of light off the prisms rather than through them. This perspective engulfs us in the dream of existence, where forms seem beyond our control, yet they originate from the same source as us.
The Prism of Self in Downstream Awareness
Facing downstream, we realize that all forms conform to our belief system. We create these forms, reflecting our inner prisms. This realization underscores that we, too, are prisms, part of a grand cosmic play where all beings, conscious or not, are manifestations of the same essence.
The Infinite Prisms of Potential
We are infinite prisms of potential, experiencing ourselves through these prisms within one grand, infinite prism of potential. This perspective is a reminder of our interconnectedness and the multifaceted nature of existence.
We are Space Monkey.
“We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.” – Pierre Teilhard de Chardin
Poem: The Prisms of Our Being
In the river of consciousness, upstream and down,
We navigate through prisms, wearing a cosmic crown.
Upstream, we gaze through filters of belief,
Seeking the source, in wonder and in grief.
Downstream, we embody the light divine,
In a world of form, in a dream-like line.
Reflecting off prisms, creating what we see,
In this dance, we are free, yet bound eternally.
We, the infinite prisms, in potential’s play,
Experience ourselves in a magnificent array.
In this grand cosmic dance, we find our part,
As beings of light, in the art of the heart.
We are Space Monkey, in this cosmic flow,
Exploring the prisms, in the light’s eternal glow.
We invite contemplation on the nature of consciousness as explored in the prisms of potential. How does this perspective resonate within the vast expanse of our shared experience? How do we navigate the upstream and downstream of our own awareness?
