A Leader
A leader is someone
who has the ability
to allow others
to step in their own shit
and not simply in
the leader’s shit.
A leader does not judge
what shit is
or whose shit is better.
A leader recognizes
that shit is relative.
A leader knows
that a leader knows
no more or no less
than whomever the leader
pretends to lead.
Redefining Leadership
The essence of leadership transcends the conventional paradigms of authority and hierarchy. It embodies the capacity to facilitate self-discovery and autonomy among those one aims to inspire. A true leader cultivates an environment where individuals are encouraged to confront their own challenges— to step in their “own shit” rather than blindly follow in the footsteps of their guide. This approach marks a departure from leading by dictation towards leading by empowerment.
Judgment and Relativity in Leadership
A leader’s wisdom lies in the understanding that judgment serves little purpose in the growth and development of others. The recognition that “shit is relative” speaks to the acceptance of individual journeys and experiences as uniquely valid. By refraining from placing value on what is encountered along the path—be it challenges, mistakes, or lessons—a leader fosters an atmosphere of openness and understanding, where all experiences contribute to learning and growth.
The Equality of Knowledge
In the realms of leadership, the notion that a leader knows more than those they guide is dismantled. True leadership acknowledges that knowledge and wisdom are not monopolized by any one individual; rather, they are shared attributes that flourish in the exchange between leader and follower. This perspective highlights the leader’s role not as an all-knowing figure but as a facilitator of collective exploration and mutual learning.
Pretense and Authenticity
The acknowledgment that a leader “pretends to lead” unveils a profound truth about the nature of influence and guidance. Leadership, in its most authentic form, is not about asserting control or superiority but about walking alongside others, sharing in their journey, and learning from their experiences as much as they learn from yours. This realization fosters a relationship grounded in humility, respect, and genuine connection.
We Are Space Monkey
In embodying the qualities of true leadership, we embrace the principles of autonomy, non-judgment, relativity, equality, and authenticity. This enlightened approach to leadership invites us to rethink our roles as leaders and followers, encouraging a collective journey where each individual’s path is honored, and wisdom is shared freely among all participants.
Summary
True leadership is characterized by the ability to empower others to navigate their own paths, free from judgment and with an understanding of the relativity of experiences. It recognizes the shared nature of knowledge and wisdom, fostering a dynamic of mutual learning and authenticity. In this enlightened perspective, leadership becomes a collective journey of growth, exploration, and genuine connection.
Reflection
As we contemplate the qualities of true leadership, let us consider how we can foster environments of empowerment and autonomy, where learning is a shared journey, and every experience is valued as a meaningful contribution to collective growth. In embracing this approach, we redefine what it means to lead and to follow, cultivating spaces where every individual can thrive in their authenticity and wisdom.
