A Seeming Meditation
Find a quiet and comfortable space to sit or lie down. Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and exhale slowly.
1. Awareness of the Breath: Begin by bringing your attention to your breath. Feel the sensation of each inhale and exhale. Focus on the rise and fall of your chest or the sensation of the breath passing through your nostrils. This breath is your connection to what seems to be the present moment.
2. Grounding in the Present: Imagine yourself in a vast, open space. You are surrounded by stillness and silence. This space represents the unchanging potentials or possibilities that exist.
3. Your Perceived Movement: Now, in your mind’s eye, see yourself as if you’re walking or moving within this space. Your movements create the sense of change and progress. Notice how it seems like you are changing and evolving as you move. Notice also that nothing is, in fact, changing or moving.
4. The Unchanging Landscape: As you continue to move within this space, remind yourself that the space itself remains constant and unchanging. It’s like a backdrop of infinite potential that never shifts. It represents the unchanging potentials or possibilities. Only your attention seems to be moving.
5. Reflect on Change: Take a moment to reflect on this perspective. Consider how the change you experience may be a result of your interaction with these unchanging potentials. Is it possible that the change you perceive is a product of your movement within a constant infinite backdrop of potentiality?
6. Embrace the Paradox: Allow any thoughts or questions about this perspective to arise without judgment. It’s okay if it seems paradoxical or challenging to grasp fully. Simply observe these thoughts and let them be.
7. Return to the Breath: Now, gently shift your focus back to your breath. Inhale and exhale, feeling the rhythm of your breath. It’s a reminder of the present moment and your connection to the here and now.
8. Gratitude: Before you finish, take a moment to express gratitude for this exploration of perspective. Gratitude for the opportunity to consider different ways of understanding the nature of change and existence.
9. Slowly Return: When you’re ready, open your eyes, and bring your awareness back to the room. Take a few more deep breaths, slowly reconnecting with your surroundings.
This guided meditation invites you to contemplate the idea that change may be a product of your interaction with unchanging potentials. It encourages you to explore this perspective with an open mind and curiosity. Remember that it’s okay if it feels challenging or paradoxical; the act of reflection itself can be a valuable experience.
