I Never Asked To Be Old: The Corridors of Time

I don’t feel particularly old,
but I no longer see any point in denying it.

I’ve been living so long
that time has become
a character in my story.

I am looked at
in a certain light,
not because
of my accomplishments
or lack thereof,
but because I am old.

I never asked to be old.

To judge
my personality,
my physical state
and my track record
based on longevity is
an honor I never asked for;
a competition I never entered.

Still,
I gratefully admit,
that the gravities of time,
the diminishment of the senses,
the letting go of control of things,
all bring perceptions and perspectives
I could not possibly have as a young person.

I simply wasn’t ready for the wisdom of age.
I was too busy being young and stupid.

Space Monkey Reflects: The Wisdom of Unasked Age

To age is to dance with a partner you did not choose, a partner whose presence you never invited but who teaches you steps you could not otherwise know. Age, unbidden, arrives unceremoniously. It is neither a blessing nor a curse, but a fact of existence—a transformation of perception, body, and spirit.

The young may revere or dismiss the old, their gaze heavy with assumptions about accomplishment or failure, vigor or frailty. But you see now that age is not earned like a medal, nor bestowed like an accolade. It simply happens. It is not the summation of a life lived perfectly but the inevitable passage through the corridors of time.

You did not ask to be old, nor to be judged by its metrics. Longevity feels like a competition you never entered, yet here you are, measured against its invisible yardstick. The world assigns meaning to your years, as though mere survival were an achievement. Yet you, in your quiet honesty, understand that aging is not a feat but an unfolding—a shift in gravities and perspectives that only time can bring.

You once thrived in the chaos of youth, in its relentless energy and boundless ambition. You were busy being young and stupid, as you so candidly put it. But youth is not a flaw, just as age is not a virtue. They are states of being, each with its own truths, its own lessons, its own gifts. To be young is to explore without knowing, to leap without looking. To be old is to see the world with quieter eyes, to recognize the folly and beauty of it all.

Time, now a character in your story, reveals the wisdom of letting go—of control, of certainty, of the illusion that life can be tamed or planned. It brings the gift of perspective, the ability to see yourself not as an isolated being but as part of the grand tapestry. Time humbles and exalts, diminishes and deepens. It teaches you that the wisdom of age is not a trophy but an invitation to a more profound understanding of life.

You do not deny your age because denial serves no purpose. To live so long that time itself feels like a companion is not a burden but an opportunity. It is a chance to embrace the strange and beautiful truths that only become clear when the urgency of youth fades.

You never asked to be old, but here you are. And in this unchosen role, you find gratitude—not for the judgments of others, but for the richness of perspective that age bestows. You see now that wisdom is not given to the young because they are too consumed with the fire of their own becoming. But you also see that your younger self, in all its folly, was a necessary part of the journey to this moment.

We are Space Monkey.

Summary

Aging is not an achievement but a passage, bringing unasked-for wisdom and perspectives only time can provide. Youth and age are not opposites but complementary states, each necessary in the grand unfolding of life.

Glossarium

  • Unbidden Wisdom: The insights that come with age, not sought but granted through the passage of time.
  • Gravities of Time: The physical, emotional, and spiritual shifts that aging brings, shaping perspective and understanding.
  • Youthfire: The consuming energy and ambition of youth that blinds one to the quiet truths of age.

Quote

“You never ask to be old, but age answers questions you never thought to ask.” — Space Monkey

Through the Corridors of Time

I walk with time,
uninvited,
yet always present.

Once, I ran ahead,
youthfire burning bright,
too busy to see
the shadows it cast.

Now, time leads,
its gravities gentle,
its lessons unspoken.

I did not ask for age,
but it answers,
softly,
truthfully.

Through diminished senses,
I see more clearly.
Through surrender,
I find peace.

We are Space Monkey.

Time as a Character in the Story of Life

In the narrative of existence, time emerges not merely as a backdrop but as a character, shaping and defining the journey. Longevity transforms into a defining trait, casting a distinct light on one’s life, independent of accomplishments or failures. This perspective underscores the unique interplay between time and identity, where age becomes a central character in the unfolding story.

The Unasked Honor of Age

The societal tendency to judge individuals based on their age rather than their personal attributes or achievements is an unasked honor and an unintended competition. It places a spotlight on age as a marker of worth or achievement, a role that is often unrequested and unanticipated.

The Gravity of Time and Aging

With the passage of time comes a shift in perspective, an evolution in understanding. The gravities of time – the physical changes, the diminishment of senses, and the gradual release of control – bring about insights and perceptions unattainable in youth. These changes, while often challenging, offer a unique lens through which to view life.

The Wisdom of Age Versus the Fervor of Youth

The wisdom that accompanies aging stands in stark contrast to the vigor and often unrefined nature of youth. The acknowledgment that one was not ready for the wisdom of age during youth highlights a natural progression in life’s journey. It illustrates the cycle of growth, learning, and evolving understanding that comes with each stage of life.

Embracing the Journey of Aging

Despite the societal emphasis on youth, there is a grace in accepting and embracing the aging process. Recognizing the value of the experiences and perspectives gained over time allows for a richer appreciation of life’s journey. Aging, with its inherent wisdom and evolved viewpoints, offers a deeper understanding of existence, transcending the superficial measures of success and failure.

“To be old and wise, you must first be young and stupid.” – Unknown

In the story of life, where time plays its part,
Aging shapes our journey, right from the start.
In the dance of years, where wisdom grows,
We embrace our path, as time bestows.

With each wrinkle and gray, a story untold,
In the book of life, our tales unfold.
In the wisdom of age, where perspectives gleam,
We find the beauty, in life’s flowing stream.

How do we embrace the aging process, recognizing the unique wisdom and perspectives it brings, and appreciating the journey of growth and understanding it offers?
