Depend On Your Anxiety: The Anchor of Unease

Nobody ever said
“Oh, I am so glad I have anxiety.”
Let me be the first.

Oh, I am so glad I have anxiety.

My anxiety makes me what I am.
My anxiety gives me something to talk about.
My anxiety helps me relate to some very
nice people who also have anxiety.

My anxiety can make my life seem hellish,
but mostly it inspires me to expression.

For this reason, I thank my anxiety.

I also worry that my anxiety might leave me.

But it never does.

I know that I can depend
on my anxiety.

Space Monkey Reflects: How You Can Depend on Your Anxiety

Anxiety, often dismissed as a nuisance or an enemy, is in fact a deeply dependable companion. Though it challenges us, it also shapes us, whispering truths that might otherwise go unnoticed. It is not a flaw but a feature of our humanity, a dynamic force that offers both struggle and insight. What if, instead of resisting anxiety, we embraced it, even thanked it? What if we saw it as a partner in our journey of self-expression and connection?

Anxiety has a peculiar way of making itself known. It demands our attention, even when we wish it wouldn’t. Yet, this insistence is not random. It serves as a reminder of our aliveness, our sensitivity to the world around us. Anxiety pushes us to confront the edges of our comfort zones, to explore the inner landscapes of our fears and hopes. It is, in its own way, a guide—unyielding, yes, but also profoundly loyal.

The dependability of anxiety lies in its persistence. It does not abandon us, even when we wish it would. This steadfastness might seem like a curse, but it can also be seen as a gift. Anxiety refuses to let us stagnate. It forces us to grow, to adapt, to understand ourselves more deeply. In this way, anxiety becomes a motivator, a catalyst for transformation.

Anxiety inspires expression. For many, it is the wellspring of creativity, a source of stories, art, or ideas that might not exist without it. When words fail to capture our experience, anxiety pushes us to find new ways of communicating. It connects us with others who share similar struggles, creating a sense of solidarity and mutual understanding. Through anxiety, we find a shared language that transcends isolation.

But what about the fear that anxiety might leave us? This thought may seem counterintuitive, even absurd. Why would we worry about losing something so often maligned? Yet, this fear speaks to a deeper truth: anxiety has become part of our identity. It shapes how we perceive and interact with the world. Its absence, while freeing, might leave us feeling unmoored, unsure of who we are without it.

This paradoxical relationship with anxiety is a testament to its complexity. It challenges us while supporting us. It overwhelms us while grounding us. To depend on anxiety is not to glorify its difficulties but to recognize its role in our lives. It is to see anxiety not as a villain but as a teacher—one that is unrelenting but also deeply invested in our growth.

How, then, do we engage with our anxiety in a way that honors its lessons without succumbing to its weight? First, by acknowledging it without judgment. Anxiety is not a moral failing but a natural response to the uncertainties of life. Second, by cultivating gratitude for what it offers, even if its gifts come wrapped in discomfort. Third, by finding ways to express and share its presence, transforming it from a source of isolation into a bridge of connection.

In embracing anxiety, we are not giving it free rein to dominate our lives. Instead, we are recognizing its inevitability and choosing to work with it rather than against it. This partnership can lead to unexpected revelations, deeper connections, and a richer understanding of ourselves and others.

Yes, anxiety can make life seem hellish at times. But it can also make life vibrant, compelling, and uniquely ours. To depend on anxiety is to acknowledge its dual nature—the pain it brings and the growth it fosters. It is to recognize that even our struggles have value, that even our fears can inspire beauty and meaning.

The Anchor of Unease

Anxiety,
a weight I carry,
yet a tether to the now.

It whispers fears,
but also truths.
It pulls me inward,
then pushes me to speak.

I depend on its presence,
its stubbornness,
its steady hum in the silence.

Without it,
who would I be?
It reminds me,
I am alive.
