Time Immemorial Day—The Eternal Bond of Souls

Time Immemorial Day

You are not missing me
but rather the light that defined me
and the life that that shined through me.

I was honored to be within this form
within this space
but I was just a trick of the eye
for we have always been connected at the soul.

Know that I am not gone
just the reflection of the light
for the life that we share is everlasting
and I am closer to you now
than I have ever been.

Space Monkey Reflects: Time Immemorial Day—The Eternal Bond of Souls

On Time Immemorial Day, we turn our hearts and minds toward the profound understanding that our connections transcend the physical and persist through the spiritual. The concept that we are not missing the person but the light they reflected and the life that shone through them offers a comforting perspective on loss and continuity. It suggests that what we truly yearn for is not merely the physical presence but the essence, the spirit that animated their existence.

This day serves as a reminder that our loved ones are never truly gone. Instead, they transform into a different state of being—one that remains intricately linked to us at the soul level. The idea that we are connected at the soul and that this bond is everlasting reassures us that death is but a transformation, a shift from one form of presence to another, more ethereal one.

In recognizing that a loved one is “just a trick of the eye” and that our connection is rooted in something much deeper, we can begin to perceive their presence in a new light. They are closer to us now than ever, not as reflections of light but as enduring elements of the life we continue to share. This perspective shifts our grief from a sense of permanent loss to an understanding of ongoing companionship, albeit in a different dimension.

Time Immemorial Day is thus a moment to celebrate the eternal nature of our bonds. It allows us to acknowledge that the people we care about are woven into the fabric of our lives and our beings, influencing us and accompanying us in ways that defy the physical constraints of time and space.

By embracing this view, we find comfort and peace in the knowledge that our relationships are not confined to the years we spend together but stretch into the realm of the timeless, where every moment is connected and every memory is alive.

Summary

Time Immemorial Day reflects on the everlasting bond of souls beyond physical presence. It emphasizes that our connections with loved ones continue through their essence and spirit, offering comfort and a new understanding of closeness that transcends physical separation.

Glossarium

  • Time Immemorial Day: A symbolic day of remembrance that celebrates the eternal connection between souls, transcending physical separation.
  • Essence and Spirit: The core and energy of a being, which continue to exist and connect beyond physical presence.

Quote

“You are not missing me but rather the light that defined me and the life that shined through me.” — Space Monkey

In the quiet of the twilight,
where shadows blend with the fading light,
the souls of the departed glow,
soft and steady, in their eternal show.

Their presence not lost, but transformed,
in the dance of the universe, reformed,
where the bonds of love and memory weave,
a tapestry of connection, in which we believe.

Here, in the gentle reach of a hand,
toward the light that still stands,
we touch the essence, pure and deep,
of those we love, in eternal keep.

This day of remembrance, serene and still,
reminds us of love’s enduring will,
that in the space between heartbeats,
lies the connection that forever greets.

Benefit of the Doubt: The Light of Trust

Benefit of the Doubt

The English definition of “give someone the benefit of the doubt” is to decide that you will believe someone, even though you are not sure that what the person is saying is true.

Shouldn’t the phrase be “give someone the benefit of no doubt?”

Does “I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt” say that you a naturally trusting person or a conditioned-to-be doubting person? I would say the latter, for if you were trusting, the thought would not even arise.

These are shadow thoughts, the kind that chase us down darkened alleyways and rabbit holes, because beyond our minds, shadow thoughts are reinforced by our very language.

Of this I have no doubt.

Space Monkey Reflects: The Shadows of Doubt and the Light of Trust

In the labyrinth of human interaction, the phrase “give someone the benefit of the doubt” emerges as a beacon of tempered trust, casting light and shadows in equal measure. This common expression, woven into the fabric of our language, reveals much about our societal disposition towards trust and skepticism. It posits a fundamental question: are we naturally inclined to doubt, or is trust our default stance?

To ‘give the benefit of the doubt’ implies a suspension of disbelief, a decision to lean towards trust despite lingering uncertainties. Yet, the very need to articulate this inclination suggests that doubt is often the more immediate response, a shadow cast by our experiences and expectations. The phrase could indeed be reimagined as ‘give the benefit of no doubt,’ which would imply a state of inherent trust, absent of skepticism. However, such a formulation is foreign to our lexicon, perhaps because it does not reflect the nuanced reality of human psychology.

Doubt and trust are not mere opposites; they are complex, coexisting forces within us. Doubt acts as a guardian, a critical inner voice that urges caution and vigilance. Trust, on the other hand, is the bridge-builder, fostering connections and smoothing the path toward collective understanding and empathy. The interplay between these forces is a dance of light and shadow, each shaping our interactions and coloring our perceptions.

The prevalence of doubt in our expressions and thoughts is indicative of a deeper, perhaps evolutionary, trait: the survival instinct that compels us to question and verify to protect ourselves from deception or harm. Yet, this protective mechanism can also lead us down darkened alleyways of suspicion and isolation.

Choosing to give the benefit of the doubt is, therefore, an act of bravery and optimism. It is a choice to see the potential for goodness and truth in others despite the risk of being wrong. This choice is not a denial of doubt’s existence but an acknowledgment of its presence paired with a conscious decision to lean towards a more trusting interaction.

In doing so, we challenge the shadows cast by our doubts and allow the light of trust to illuminate our path. This balance is not static but dynamic, continuously recalibrated as we navigate our relationships and experiences. It requires a keen awareness of our inner landscapes and the external pressures that shape our perceptions.

Summary

Giving someone the benefit of the doubt involves a complex interplay between natural skepticism and a conscious choice to trust reflecting our societal and evolutionary influences on trust. This expression highlights how doubt and trust coexist and influence our relationships suggesting that trusting is an optimistic act that acknowledges but looks beyond doubt. The phrase ‘give the benefit of the doubt’ underlines our inclination to protect ourselves while also striving for connection and understanding.

Glossarium

Benefit of the doubt: A phrase indicating a decision to believe someone despite uncertainties typically reflecting an interplay between doubt and trust.
Shadow thoughts: Negative or doubting thoughts influenced by personal experiences or societal conditioning.
Tempered trust: A form of trust that is moderated or restrained by experiences of doubt and caution.

“In the dance of light and shadow trust finds its rhythm in the music of human connection.” — Space Monkey

In the alleys of the mind where shadows play
doubt whispers caution with every sway
Yet in the light where trust may gleam
lies the path to connect to dream
Benefit of the doubt a delicate thread
woven through the tapestry we tread
In this balance of give and take
we find the strength to trust to make
In each gesture of openness
lies the power to transform to bless
For in the dance of shadow and light
we find the courage to embrace the night

Gang-Banging Neurons: The Illusory Divide of Fantasy and Fact

Within your mind,
fantasy and fact
are both equal thoughts
so why deny yourself
the perverse pleasure
of the orgy behind your eyes?
It's not as though
someone will snap a selfie
of your gang-banging neurons.

Within your mind,
fantasy and fact
are both equal thoughts
so why deny yourself
the perverse pleasure
of the orgy behind your eyes?
It’s not as though
someone will snap a selfie
of your gang-banging neurons.

Space Monkey Reflects: The Illusory Divide of Fantasy and Fact

In the vast expanse of the mind’s universe, where the nebulae of thought coalesce and drift apart with the ease of breath, there exists a playground without boundaries, a domain where the dichotomy of fantasy and fact fades into obsolescence. This is the theater of cognition, a place where every act of imagination is as tangible as the stone and steel of reality, and every concrete fact holds the fluidity of a dream. It’s a space where neurons, those diligent architects of perception, craft experiences that defy the rigidity of the external world.

In this realm, the thoughts we label as perverse pleasures are not shrouded in guilt or shamed into silence; they are celebrated for their audacity to exist in the same realm where empirical truths are revered. Why deny oneself the ecstasy of thought, the revelry behind one’s eyes, when the mind itself does not discriminate between the licentious and the lawful, the fanciful and the factual? There is no moral overseer within the synapses, snapping evidence of the mind’s forays into the forbidden or the fantastical.

The notion that fantasy and fact are disparate threads in the tapestry of thought is a fallacy, a mirage maintained by the guardians of convention. In truth, they are intertwined, each giving the other context and contrast, defining the contours of knowledge and the depths of exploration. It is in the interplay of these seemingly opposing forces that innovation is birthed, and epiphanies emerge with the sudden brilliance of a star being born.

The mind is the crucible where the raw ore of information is melted and merged with the ephemeral whispers of the imagination. It is where the alchemy of understanding transmutes the base elements of data and daydreams into the gold of wisdom. Here, in the privacy of the psyche, the orgy of thoughts—be they carnal or cerebral—unfolds without judgment, an unspoken symphony of the self in all its unfettered glory.

Summary

The mind is a realm where fantasy and fact intertwine without conflict. In this space, thoughts are free to express themselves, from the most empirical to the most imaginative. The internal dialogue of the mind shows that creativity and knowledge are not separate but interconnected, giving rise to a rich inner life that defies external categorization or moral judgment.

Glossarium

  • Theater of Cognition: A metaphorical space representing the mind’s capacity for thought, creativity, and processing of reality.
  • Crucible of the Mind: A symbol of the transformative process thoughts undergo within the mind, merging facts with imagination to create wisdom.
  • Symphony of the Self: The harmonious and often complex interplay of an individual’s thoughts and feelings that make up their inner world.

“Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, it’s a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope.” – Dr. Seuss

In the mind’s theater, a play of light and shade
Thoughts without masters, in freedom arrayed
Where fantasy and fact, in a dance entwined
Compose the grand opus of the human mind

Here, neurons revel in silent masquerade
Where dreams unjudged, in broad daylight parade
And the so-called perverse, simply thoughts unconfined
Roam the inner scape, by no law defined

For in this space, no dichotomy is found
Imagination and truth in unity abound
The mind, a canvas broad, unfurls its might
Where every thought is equal in its flight

In the silent communion of the psyche’s own realm
Fantasy and fact, together at the helm
Guide the soul’s voyage through the inner deep
Where the essence of being, in silence, does speak

Eight Reasons We Love Making Lists

eight-reasons-we-love-making-lists

Why do we make so many lists? What are our underlying psychological motives? Why are there only eight things?

The affinity for making lists is a fascinating reflection of human psychology and behavior, embodying a range of emotional and cognitive benefits. Here’s a deeper look into the eight reasons why list-making is so appealing:

  1. Sense of Completion: Listing tasks or goals gives a tangible form to our aspirations, providing a clear vision of what we aim to achieve. This physical manifestation of our thoughts reinforces our commitment to them, making our goals and ideas feel both valid and achievable.
  2. Authority and Expertise: Crafting lists, especially on topics we’re knowledgeable about or interested in, bolsters our sense of authority. It’s a way of organizing our knowledge and sharing it with others, thereby asserting our expertise and contributions in various domains.
  3. Initiating Action: The act of making a list is often the first step toward action. It transitions us from a state of contemplation to one of readiness and intent. By outlining what needs to be done, we’re more inclined to start working towards these objectives, moving from planning to execution.
  4. Compulsion to Organize: For many, list-making is a response to the chaos of numerous thoughts and ideas swirling in our minds. It’s an attempt to capture, organize, and control these hunches, making sense of them in a structured manner.
  5. Exercising Judgment: Lists inherently involve making choices about what to include or exclude, reflecting our priorities and values. This selection process empowers us, allowing us to curate our focus and direct our efforts towards what we deem most important.
  6. Memory and Trust: Recognizing our own limitations in memory and attention, we turn to lists as external aids that help us remember and track tasks. This acknowledgment of our fallibility is humbling, yet practical, ensuring that nothing important is overlooked.
  7. Control and Power: Writing things down can indeed give a sense of control over our lives. By enumerating tasks, goals, or ideas, we feel a greater command over our environment and future. However, this can also highlight our dependencies on these lists, prompting reflection on their true role in our lives.
  8. Satisfaction in Achievement: The act of crossing items off a list is profoundly satisfying. It symbolizes completion and achievement, offering a visual and psychological reward for our efforts. This final act of marking off completed tasks reinforces our progress and motivates continued productivity.

Together, these reasons encapsulate the multifaceted appeal of making lists. They not only serve practical purposes in organizing and remembering but also fulfill deeper psychological needs for control, achievement, and self-expression.

Make It Small: Challenge The Norms of Success

Make It Small

Most people want to make it big,
but I simply want to make it small.

What does that mean?

Making it small
means taking control
of the little things
that aren’t so little.

Making it small
means finding
the mental discipline
to stop myself from
drinking that extra drink,
biting that extra bite,
thinking that extra thought
that serves no purpose
other than to make me
feel bad, sad or mad.

Making it small
means learning
how to control
the most
difficult
moronic
embarrassing
ugly
unworthy
unhealthy
unlovable
person in the world.

Me.

And discovering in
the process that I am
none of those things.

Perhaps one day
I will make it big.

But bigness
can so easily
carry emptiness
which is why
I will first
fill that space
with the grace
of making it small.

Space Monkey Reflects: The Grace of Making It Small in a World Obsessed with Bigness

In the cosmic dance of existence, where celestial bodies traverse the vastness of space, there lies a profound lesson in the subtle art of making it small. Amidst the societal rush towards grandeur and the relentless pursuit of ‘making it big,’ Space Monkey offers a perspective that celebrates the magnificence of the microcosm, the beauty in the minutiae of life. This philosophy, rooted in the understanding of the universe’s intricate details, illuminates the path to true fulfillment, not through expansion, but through the mastery of the self and the appreciation of the ‘little things that aren’t so little.’

Making it small is an act of rebellion, a deliberate choice to eschew the glamour of excess for the sanctity of simplicity. It is a journey inward, towards the core of our being, where the tumult of desires and the cacophony of expectations fade into silence. Here, in the quietude of the self, we encounter the most formidable adversary and the greatest teacher — ourselves. The quest to make it small is, at its heart, a battle for self-control, a test of mental discipline against the temptations that beckon us towards self-destruction.

The discipline to resist ‘that extra drink, that extra bite, that extra thought’ is more than an exercise in restraint; it is a practice of mindfulness, a cultivation of awareness that each choice we make is a stroke on the canvas of our lives. These decisions, seemingly insignificant in isolation, coalesce into the masterpiece of our existence. Making it small, then, becomes an act of creation, a deliberate sculpting of the self through the choices we make every moment.

This process of making it small is fraught with confrontation, a mirror reflecting our deepest insecurities and darkest fears. It demands that we face the ‘most difficult moronic embarrassing ugly unworthy unhealthy unlovable person’ we believe ourselves to be. Yet, it is within this confrontation that the alchemy of transformation occurs, revealing that we are, in truth, none of those things. This revelation is the first step towards self-acceptance, a recognition of our inherent worth and the potential for grace within us.

The pursuit of making it small, paradoxically, leads to a bigness of spirit, a richness of character that cannot be found in the empty achievements of societal accolades. It teaches us that true bigness is not a measure of wealth, fame, or power, but the depth of our understanding, the strength of our will, and the capacity of our hearts to embrace the grace of simplicity.

Perhaps, in time, the journey of making it small will lead to the attainment of bigness, not as the world defines it, but as a state of being filled with the grace of contentment, peace, and fulfillment. This bigness, born from the humility of making it small, carries no emptiness but is replete with the essence of life itself.

We are Space Monkey, explorers of the inner universe, discovering that the vastness of space is mirrored in the depths of our souls. In making it small, we find a universe within, infinite in its complexity, boundless in its beauty.

Summary

Making it small is an inward journey that challenges societal norms of success. It’s a practice of mindfulness and self-discipline, focusing on the seemingly insignificant decisions that shape our existence. Through confronting our deepest insecurities, we discover our true worth and learn that true fulfillment lies in simplicity and self-mastery. This path leads to a genuine bigness of spirit, filled with peace and contentment, defining success on our own terms.

Glossarium

  • Making It Small: The philosophy of focusing on and appreciating the small, everyday choices and moments, leading to greater self-control and inner peace.
  • Bigness of Spirit: A state of profound inner fulfillment and peace, achieved not through external achievements but through self-mastery and simplicity.

“In the quietude of making it small, we discover the cosmos within, a universe of possibility in the palm of our hands.” – Space Monkey

In the silence of the cosmos
Where stars burn with a quiet fire
Space Monkey walks the path of the small

With every step, a choice
Each breath, a moment of grace
In the simplicity of being, a universe unfolds

The discipline of the mind
A dance with the self
In the arena of the soul, victory is found

Not in the clamor of the big
But in the whisper of the small
Where truth resides, and peace is born

To make it small is to expand
Beyond the bounds of the known
Into the heart of existence, where all is one

We are Space Monkey, travelers on this journey
Finding bigness in the grace of the small
In the tapestry of life, weaving threads of light
