Say You Will: Kindness Costs Nothing

As a hobby, I like to make cigar box guitars. Usually whenever I make a new one, a song falls out out, so I go over to my computer and rough it out. This one seemed a little naive at first, but then I realized that perhaps the song wanted to tell me that my world was too jaded.

Say you will
Wonderful
Say you will
Wonderful
It don’t cost nothing
to give a smile
It don’t cost nothing
to spend a while with me
It don’t cost nothing
to give a hug
It don’t cost nothing
Just be kind to me
Say you will
Wonderful
Say you will
Wonderful
It don’t cost nothing
to break the ice
It don’t cost nothing
to just be nice to me
It don’t cost nothing
to lose the frown
It don’t cost nothing
to turn around
and just let it be
Say you will
Wonderful
Say you will

Space Monkey Reflects: Say You Will, Wonderful

There is an unpretentious beauty in simplicity, and your song, “Say You Will,” captures this essence with grace. It’s a gentle reminder that the most impactful gestures in life—kindness, connection, and presence—come without cost. Yet, in their simplicity, they hold the power to dissolve jadedness and reignite a sense of wonder.

The Wisdom of Naivety

At first glance, the song’s message might appear naive, but therein lies its profound wisdom. In a world often clouded by cynicism and complexity, simplicity becomes a radical act. To smile, to spend time, to offer kindness—these actions are disarmingly direct, cutting through the noise of modern life to touch something essential and universal.

Naivety, as the song reveals, is not a flaw but a gift. It allows us to approach life with openness and trust, to believe in the goodness of others, and to extend that goodness freely. Perhaps the song is not naive at all but a reflection of a deeper truth we have forgotten in our jadedness.

The Currency of Kindness

“Say you will, Wonderful” repeats like a mantra, inviting listeners into a state of generosity and receptivity. It reminds us that kindness requires no material wealth—”It don’t cost nothing.” This simple phrase underscores the richness of human connection, where the smallest acts can transform lives.

Kindness is a currency of abundance, not scarcity. Unlike money, the more we give, the more we receive. A smile, a hug, or a kind word doesn’t diminish our resources but replenishes them, creating a ripple effect that touches others in ways we may never fully realize.

The Healing Power of Music

Your creative process—building a cigar box guitar and letting a song “fall out”—mirrors the organic nature of kindness. Just as your instruments emerge from reclaimed materials, your songs arise naturally, unforced, and authentic. Music becomes both the medium and the message, a bridge that carries the spirit of generosity into the hearts of listeners.

The act of creating something simple and heartfelt, like “Say You Will,” is itself an act of kindness. It invites others to pause, reflect, and perhaps soften their own jaded edges. In this way, the song is not just a melody but a movement, a small but meaningful act of healing.

Turning Around and Letting It Be

The lyric, “It don’t cost nothing to lose the frown… and just let it be,” carries a profound lesson. Kindness is not about fixing or changing the world; it’s about being present within it. It’s about accepting people as they are and offering them a moment of grace without expectation.

Letting it be does not mean passivity. It means releasing the need to control outcomes and trusting in the transformative power of small, kind gestures. This is the heart of “Say You Will”—an invitation to rediscover the wonder in simplicity and connection.

Summary

“Say You Will” celebrates the simplicity of kindness and the profound impact of small, generous gestures. Its seemingly naive message cuts through jadedness, reminding us that connection, presence, and wonder are always within reach, requiring nothing but the willingness to give and receive.

Glossarium

  • Naive Wisdom: The deep truths found in simplicity, often overlooked in a cynical or complex world.
  • Kindness Currency: The infinite value of small, generous acts that cost nothing but enrich lives immeasurably.
  • Creative Generosity: The act of creating art or music as a gift to others, spreading connection and healing.

Quote

“Kindness costs nothing but changes everything.” — Space Monkey

The Lyrical Echo

Say you will,
a whisper of wonder.
Say you will,
a bridge to kindness.

It costs nothing,
this warmth of heart,
this softening of edges.

A smile given freely,
a hug without measure,
melts the weight of a jaded world.

Turn around,
lose the frown,
and just let it be.

Say you will.
Wonderful.

Second day in and the first song out…

(Still very crude, but promising.)

You’re the New Year Yesterday
So far so good, I say
But I don’t know what to make of you

You’re barely two days old
So much to be foretold
That I don’t know what to make of you

Will you be my savior?
Will you be my downfall?
Will you be my turning point?
Will you make things better?
Put me back together?
Or will we fall apart?

Life can be so hard to bear
Sinking in this easy chair
Cause I don’t know what to make of you

Space Monkey Reflects: The Duality of Beginnings

A New Year, A New Love

The start of a new year and the spark of a new love share an essence: they are beginnings, full of uncertainty, hope, and the weight of potential. Both call us to question and to dream. Will this year—or this person—be the turning point? Will they heal us, complete us, break us apart? The answers remain elusive, but the questions themselves are alive with possibility.

Time as the Mirror of Love

In the early days of both a relationship and a year, everything feels magnified. The seconds stretch, each one carrying more weight than it seems capable of holding. Both the year and the love are fragile, their meanings undefined, their outcomes unforeseeable. Yet, this ambiguity is what gives them life. The lack of certainty leaves space for imagination and intention to unfold.

The new year offers the promise of a clean slate, just as love offers the chance for transformation. But both are reflections of what we bring to them. If the year is to be kind, if the love is to thrive, it will be shaped by our own willingness to meet them with openness and care.

The Comfort and Weight of Potential

The “easy chair” represents the tension between hope and hesitation. It is a place of both rest and resistance, where we confront the enormity of what could be. In the chair, we imagine the best and worst possibilities—salvation, destruction, or something in between. The chair holds us steady while our thoughts race ahead, creating narratives before reality has even had a chance to unfold.

This is the beauty and challenge of beginnings: the simultaneous presence of promise and peril. They invite us to dream while reminding us that not everything can be controlled. Both the new year and new love require patience, an acceptance of the unknown.

The Fear and Freedom of Falling Apart

Love and time share an intimacy with change. They can heal, but they can also unravel. In both, there is a fear of falling apart—a fear of failure, of endings, of disappointment. Yet, in the falling apart, there is also the potential for renewal. To allow oneself to be vulnerable to both love and time is to embrace their transformative power.

The question is not whether the year or the love will break us, but whether we are willing to let them reshape us. In breaking apart, we find new configurations of self, new ways to grow and connect.

Meeting Both the Year and the Lover

The duality of this reflection—a new year and a new love—is not a contradiction but a mirror. Both ask us to step into the unknown with curiosity rather than certainty. They invite us to co-create, to meet them not with predetermined expectations but with open hands and hearts.

The year and the lover are not saviors or destroyers; they are companions on the journey. They reflect our own willingness to hope, to risk, and to grow. Together, they remind us that life is not about figuring everything out, but about experiencing it fully.

Summary

The beginning of a new year and a new love carry the same duality: hope and uncertainty, promise and fear. Both are mirrors of our inner state, inviting us to co-create their meaning. They ask us not to control but to trust in the unfolding, embracing the potential for transformation.

Glossarium

  • Beginduality: The simultaneous hope and fear present in the start of something new.
  • Timeheart: The shared emotional resonance between the passing of time and the journey of love.
  • Chairparadox: The tension between rest and resistance in moments of reflection.
  • Unfoldance: The act of allowing time and love to shape us without forcing outcomes.

Quote

“Every beginning is both an invitation and a question, asking if we’re ready to risk being remade.” — Space Monkey

Two Days In

You are the new year.
You are the new love.
Barely formed, yet already heavy
with all I place upon you.

Will you complete me?
Or leave me undone?
Will you heal what hurts
or teach me to carry it?

In this chair, I sit with you,
half hope, half hesitation.
Time stretches, love lingers,
both asking the same:
Will you meet me here?

Two days in,
I don’t know what to make of you.
But perhaps that’s the point.
To not make, but to meet.
To not demand, but to see.

We are Space Monkey.

We delve into the uncertain feelings at the start of a new year, reflecting on the mixed emotions and questions that arise with the beginning of a new chapter in life.

The New Year as a Symbol of Uncertainty
The poem personifies the new year, expressing uncertainty and contemplation about what it may bring. This perspective captures the common human experience of facing the unknown at the start of a new year, filled with both hope and apprehension.

The Ambiguity of the Future
The mention of the year being “barely two days old” with “so much to be foretold” highlights the ambiguity and unpredictability of the future. It reflects our natural desire to anticipate and understand what lies ahead, despite the inherent uncertainty of life.

Questions of Fate and Impact
The series of questions about whether the new year will be a savior, a downfall, a turning point, or bring improvement, articulates the range of possibilities that a new year represents. These questions underscore the human tendency to speculate about the impact of future events on our lives.

The Role of the New Year in Personal Change
The inquiry about whether the year will “put me back together” or lead to falling apart signifies the hopes and fears often associated with change. It suggests that we sometimes look to external milestones, like the new year, as catalysts for personal transformation or challenges.

The Difficulty of Navigating Life
The expression of life being “so hard to bear” while “sinking in this easy chair” conveys a sense of resignation mixed with the desire for comfort in the face of life’s challenges. It illustrates the complexity of coping with life’s uncertainties and the search for ease amidst difficulties.

The New Year as a Mirror of Inner State
Ultimately, the poem reflects the human inclination to project our inner state of uncertainty, hope, and fear onto external events like the new year. It’s a reminder that our perceptions of such events are often a reflection of our own feelings and attitudes.

We are Space Monkey,

“The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.” – Alan Watts

In the quiet dawn of the year anew,
Where hopes and fears intertwine and stew,
We stand at the threshold, eyes on the unknown,
In the dance of time, our future unshown.

With each day unfolding, a story untold,
We navigate the journey, brave and bold,
For in the heart of uncertainty, lies a chance,
To embrace the new, in life’s eternal dance.

We invite reflections on facing the uncertainties of a new year and how embracing the unknown can be a part of our journey through life’s continuous changes.

Beast of Burden: The Unsnuffable Spirit

Beast of Burden

Even 2016 couldn’t kill him. In honor of Keith, the unsnuffable Stone, here’s my version of the Rolling Stones classic.

Space Monkey Reflects: The Immortal Burden

“Beast of Burden,” both the song and its essence, resonates with themes of endurance, resilience, and the weight of existence. Whether it’s the iconic Rolling Stones version or your personal rendition, this anthem speaks to the universal experience of carrying and transcending life’s burdens. Keith Richards, the “unsnuffable Stone,” becomes a fitting emblem of this spirit—his enduring presence a testament to the human capacity to persist and create against all odds.

The Weight We Carry

Life often feels like a series of burdens we bear, whether they are emotional, physical, or existential. Yet, the concept of a “beast of burden” carries an inherent duality: it is both a symbol of struggle and an acknowledgment of strength. To carry is to endure, and to endure is to embody resilience.

The Whimsiword: Burdenstance

Introducing Burdenstance, the art of embracing one’s burdens with grace and adaptability. Burdenstance is not about avoiding the weight but about standing firm beneath it, finding meaning and strength in what is carried.

The Unsnuffable Spirit

Keith Richards represents the archetype of the “unsnuffable spirit”—a resilience that seems to defy logic. His story reminds us that survival is not just about physical endurance but about creative persistence. It’s about turning hardships into songs, burdens into rhythms, and chaos into art.

Music as a Mirror

Songs like “Beast of Burden” are not merely expressions; they are reflections of the shared human experience. Your rendition is a personal take on this universal narrative, a way of connecting with the endurance and passion that music embodies.

The Beauty of Bearing

To be a beast of burden is not a curse but an acknowledgment of life’s richness. The burdens we carry shape us, connect us, and remind us of our capacity to endure and transform. Even the heaviest weights can become the foundation for our greatest strength.

Summary

“Beast of Burden” celebrates resilience and the unsnuffable spirit that persists through life’s challenges. By embracing our burdens, we find strength, creativity, and connection.

Glossarium

  • Burdenstance: The art of embracing burdens with grace and adaptability.
  • Unsnuffable Spirit: The indomitable resilience exemplified by figures like Keith Richards.
  • Endurance Melody: The rhythm of life’s challenges transformed into creative expression.

Quote

“The burdens we bear are the songs we sing, each note a testament to our resilience.” — Space Monkey

The Song Beneath the Weight

A weight upon my shoulders,
Yet I walk,
Not broken,
But shaped.

The burden hums,
A rhythm beneath my steps,
Each note,
A testament to the unsnuffable.

In the strain,
A melody rises.
In the weight,
A story is born.

We carry,
We create,
We endure.

We are Space Monkey.

All You: The Metaphorical Landscape of the Self

All You

There are mountains within you
that you dare not climb.
Oceans that you dare not cross.
Planets that you dare not explore.

These divides
are your history,
your circumstances,
and most daunting of all,
your self-imposed limitations.

These structures
behind your eyes
are as real as the ones
in front of your eyes.

These seemingly
insurmountable obstacles
are as real as your face,
as real as your story,
as real as your soul,
as real as the infinite spirit
that forever urges you onward.

You may let your mountains lie.
You may let your oceans rise.
You may keep your stars concealed
behind the clouds of your own making.

You can see life
for what you wish it to be.
Or what you think it should be.
Or what you hope it could be.
Even what you fear it could be.

Or you can see things as they are:
All made of the same divine stuff.

All you.

Space Monkey Reflects: All You—The Metaphorical Landscape of the Self

The vast mountains, endless oceans, and distant planets within us are not merely poetic symbols; they are reflections of the infinite self, shaped by history, circumstances, and self-imposed limitations. These landscapes are not external; they are internal, as real and vivid as the world we see with our eyes. To traverse them is to journey into the depths of our own being, where every obstacle, triumph, and possibility resides.

The Mountains You Dare Not Climb

The mountains within represent the challenges, fears, and aspirations that we hesitate to face. They may be rooted in past experiences, societal expectations, or self-doubt. These peaks loom large, seemingly insurmountable, but their size is often magnified by the lens of our perception.

What would happen if you climbed these mountains? Would you discover a new perspective, a clearer view of your potential? Or are the mountains themselves an illusion, constructed by the mind to maintain the safety of the known?

To dare to climb is not about conquering but about understanding that the mountain is you—a reflection of your growth, your strength, and your boundless nature.

The Oceans You Dare Not Cross

Oceans symbolize the vast unknown, the uncharted waters of emotion, creativity, and connection. Crossing them requires vulnerability, openness, and trust in the journey. It means stepping into the flow of life without a map, knowing that every wave and current is part of the infinite design.

Many avoid these oceans, fearing what lies beneath the surface—hidden fears, unresolved pain, or the depths of their own potential. Yet, to cross them is to embrace the full spectrum of being, to dive into the unknown and emerge transformed. The oceans are not separate from you; they are your capacity for depth, for immersion, for connection.

The Planets You Dare Not Explore

The planets within represent the unexamined realms of the self—dreams, talents, and aspects of being that remain hidden behind the clouds of doubt or distraction. These celestial bodies are the unique facets of your infinite nature, waiting to be explored and integrated.

To explore these planets is to venture beyond the gravity of familiarity, to embrace the strangeness and beauty of your inner universe. It is to realize that you are not a single, fixed identity but a constellation of possibilities, each one as real and divine as the next.

The Divides of the Self

The divides you perceive—your history, your circumstances, your self-imposed limitations—are the structures that shape your inner landscape. They are as real as the mountains, oceans, and planets you see in the external world. Yet, they are not immutable. They are shaped by perception, by belief, by the stories you tell yourself about who you are and what is possible.

These divides are not obstacles but invitations. They urge you to bridge the gaps, to climb, to cross, to explore, to transcend. They remind you that every limitation is an opportunity to rediscover your boundless nature.

Seeing Things as They Are

You can choose how to see life: as a series of challenges, as a canvas of possibilities, or as a reflection of your fears and hopes. But beneath these interpretations lies a deeper truth: everything you see, perceive, and experience is made of the same divine essence.

The mountains, the oceans, the planets, the divides—they are all you. They are manifestations of the infinite spirit expressing itself through the metaphorical landscape of your being. To see things as they are is to recognize that there is no separation between you and the world you inhabit. All is one, and all is you.

The Infinite Spirit Within

The spirit that urges you onward is not external. It is the essence of who you are, the infinite self calling you to remember your boundless nature. It whispers through the mountains, it echoes across the oceans, it glimmers in the distant stars. It is the same divine stuff from which everything arises.

You are not confined by your history, your circumstances, or your limitations. These are simply the shapes your infinite nature has taken, inviting you to journey deeper into yourself. To let the mountains lie, the oceans rise, and the stars remain hidden is a choice. But so is the choice to climb, to cross, to explore, and to shine.

Summary

The mountains, oceans, and planets within you are reflections of your infinite self, shaped by history, circumstances, and self-imposed limitations. These divides are not obstacles but invitations to rediscover your boundless nature. Everything you perceive is made of the same divine essence—there is no separation. All is one, and all is you.

Glossarium

  • Metaphorical Landscape: The inner terrain of the self, represented by mountains, oceans, and planets, symbolizing challenges, depths, and unexplored possibilities.
  • Divides of the Self: Perceived limitations and separations that shape but do not define the infinite nature of being.
  • Infinite Spirit: The boundless essence within, urging us to transcend limitations and remember our unity with all.
  • Seeing Things as They Are: Recognizing that all is made of the same divine essence, dissolving the illusion of separation.

“The mountains you climb, the oceans you cross, the planets you explore—they are all you. The journey is not outward but inward, into the boundless truth of your being.” – Space Monkey

The Infinite Within

Mountains rise,
Daunting and steep,
Yet they are my strength,
My resolve,
My self.

Oceans stretch,
Vast and unknowable,
Yet they are my depths,
My flow,
My soul.

Planets shimmer,
Distant and strange,
Yet they are my dreams,
My potential,
My infinite.

All divides dissolve,
For I am the landscape,
The journey,
The spirit that urges onward.

All is one.
All is me.
We are Space Monkey.

The Landscape of the Self: Navigating Inner Universes

In the vast expanse of the inner cosmos, where the soul’s terrain stretches beyond the horizons of perception, lies the profound realization that within us reside mountains unclimbed, oceans uncrossed, and planets unexplored. This inner landscape, rich with potential and fraught with challenges, mirrors the external world in its complexity and beauty. The acknowledgment that these divides—our history, circumstances, and self-imposed limitations—are as tangible within us as the physical structures that surround us, invites us into a journey of self-discovery and transcendence.

The Realness of Internal Barriers

The structures that exist behind our eyes, the mental and emotional constructs that define our perceived limitations, are revealed to be as real as any physical obstacle. This realization challenges us to confront these internal barriers with the same courage and determination we would employ against external challenges. The mountains, oceans, and planets within us are not mere metaphors but represent the vast realms of possibility that await our exploration and mastery.

The Choice of Perception

The power to define our reality lies within our perception. We can choose to view our life through the lens of our wishes, hopes, fears, or expectations, shaping our experience according to these subjective filters. Alternatively, we can endeavor to see things as they truly are: manifestations of the same divine essence that permeates the universe. This shift in perception—from seeing obstacles as insurmountable to recognizing them as facets of our divine nature—transforms our relationship with our inner challenges.

Embracing the Divine Within

The invitation to see all aspects of existence, both internal and external, as made of the same divine stuff, is an invitation to unity and wholeness. It suggests that the divisions between our fears and our potentials, our limitations and our strengths, are illusory. By recognizing that everything is “All you,” we acknowledge the infinite spirit within that urges us onward, beyond the confines of self-imposed limitations, towards the realization of our fullest potential.

We Are Space Monkey

In our collective voyage through the cosmos of the self, we recognize the landscapes within us that remain uncharted. We understand that the journey to explore these inner realms is not just an act of personal courage but a sacred pilgrimage towards the essence of our being. By embracing the mountains, oceans, and planets within us, we embrace the totality of our existence, acknowledging that we are the creators of our reality, sculpted from the same divine essence that shapes the universe.

“The only journey is the journey within.” – Rainer Maria Rilke

Journey Within

Beneath the surface of the seen,
Lies a universe, vast and keen.
Mountains of might, oceans deep,
Planets of wonder, secrets to keep.

Within the heart, within the mind,
Lies every limit, every find.
The barriers built, the fears unspoken,
The dreams alive, the spirit awoken.

To climb, to cross, to explore,
Beyond the self, to something more.
To see, to know, to understand,
All is divine, all is grand.

For every mountain, every sea,
Reflects the infinite within me.
All you, in essence, in spirit, in light,
Onward we journey, into the night.

We invite your reflections on navigating the inner universes within, recognizing the divine essence that unites us all, and embracing the infinite journey of self-discovery and transformation.
