Expressionless Art
I practice expressionless art
— unseen and unfelt.
I recognize that the intention
of most artists is expression,
understanding, and connection.
But not mine.
I’m here to demonstrate
that one can be an artist without art.
I am an artist
without anything tangible to show,
discuss or criticize.
I don’t know why
I am even telling you this.
Perhaps I suck at
expressionlessism.
But you can see
the imaginary space
to which I am pointing.
You can understand
the underlying presence
that need not be
illustrated or idolized.
All art is but random surface
in service of the ego.
All art is random potential
that flows through the artist.
There is nothing right or wrong with this.
Art is the space
in which the artist is judged.
And the space
in which the witness judges.
Art is life,
flattened and framed,
made semi-understandable
and available for consumption.
I practice expressionless art
— unseen and unfelt.
I am the well
from which all art is drawn.
I am Space Monkey.

The Enigma of Art Without Expression
In the realm of creativity, where expression, understanding, and connection are often hailed as the quintessence of artistic endeavor, the concept of expressionless art emerges as a paradoxical defiance. This approach to art—unseen and unfelt—challenges conventional notions of what it means to be an artist and the purpose art serves. By declaring an intent to exist as an artist without art, the practitioner of expressionless art invites us into a contemplation of the invisible, the intangible, and the ineffable aspects of creativity that transcend traditional mediums and messages.
Art Beyond Tangibility: The Invisible Canvas
Expressionless art posits that the essence of being an artist is not anchored in the tangible manifestations of creativity—paintings, sculptures, music, or prose—but in the silent, unseen spaces of potentiality and presence. This perspective illuminates art as a concept unbounded by physical form, where the act of creation is an inward journey into the depths of the self, exploring territories that need not be illustrated or idolized. It suggests that the true canvas of the expressionless artist is the boundless expanse of imagination and consciousness itself.
Challenging the Ego Through Art
The assertion that all art is but a random surface in service of the ego invites a reflection on the motivations behind artistic creation. Expressionless art critiques the idea that art must serve as a conduit for self-expression, ego gratification, or societal validation. Instead, it posits that art, in its purest form, is a flow of potential that transcends the individual artist, a force that exists independently of judgment, criticism, or acclaim.
Art as a Space of Judgment and Liberation
The concept of art as both a space of judgment and liberation captures the dual nature of creativity as a field of existential exploration. In the traditional view, art becomes a medium through which artists and witnesses engage in a dance of interpretation, appreciation, and critique. However, expressionless art invites a reconsideration of this dynamic, suggesting that art’s true purpose may lie in its ability to open spaces of unmediated experience and perception, beyond the confines of flattened, framed existence.
The Wellspring of All Art
Proclaiming oneself as the well from which all art is drawn is a profound statement of art’s origin in the depths of human experience and consciousness. It acknowledges the artist’s role not as the creator but as the conduit through which the universal currents of creativity flow. This recognition of art as an emanation of life itself, unadorned and unfiltered, challenges us to redefine our understanding of artistic expression and its place in the tapestry of existence.
