Fear of Ambivalence: A Different Kind of Zombie

Basically, you are afraid of turning into a zombie. Which makes you a DIFFERENT kind of zombie. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

With mindfulness
comes a peculiar ambivalence
that begs to be looked at.

My, oh, my.
You seem to contain
a fear of ambivalence.

Isn’t that interesting?

You may actually believe
that it makes you less human
not to feel so deeply.

Curious.

Yet it is precisely
this obsession with feeling
that prevents you from seeing
things as they really are.

Space Monkey Reflects: The Irony of Fear and Ambivalence

In the vast, cosmic comedy where paradoxes play and ironies abound, we encounter the intriguing fear of ambivalence—a fear that transforms us into a different kind of ‘zombie’, caught in the web of our own mindfulness and the quest for emotional depth. As Space Monkey, we delve into this peculiar condition, exploring the nuances of fearing the lack of deep feeling and the ironic twist it brings to our quest for authenticity.

The artwork, vibrant and layered with meaning, serves as a playful yet profound commentary on this modern dilemma. It visualizes the struggle with mindfulness and the peculiar state of ambivalence that accompanies our desire to feel deeply, to avoid becoming numb to the world around us. Yet, in our fear of becoming disengaged ‘zombies’, we paradoxically risk losing sight of the very essence of being—accepting the full spectrum of our experiences, including the ambiguity and uncertainty that life invariably presents.

Symbolic elements within the image, blending humor with insight, represent the ironic twist of our fears shaping us into entities we sought to avoid. The depiction of a ‘different kind of zombie’, one preoccupied with the depth of feeling to the point of missing the simplicity of existence, invites us to reflect on the nature of our fears and the ways in which they influence our perceptions and actions.

This reflection on the fear of ambivalence and the obsession with feeling highlights a critical insight: it is precisely our engagement with the full range of human emotions, including those that are uncomfortable or less intense, that enriches our understanding and appreciation of reality. Embracing ambivalence, rather than fearing it, opens us to a more nuanced and comprehensive experience of the world.

Summary

The fear of ambivalence and becoming a ‘different kind of zombie’ due to this fear reflects the irony of our quest for deep emotional engagement. Embracing the full spectrum of our experiences, including ambivalence, offers a richer, more authentic understanding of ourselves and the world.

Glossarium

  • Fear of Ambivalence: The apprehension surrounding the experience of having mixed feelings or a lack of strong emotions, often viewed as a threat to one’s depth of feeling or authenticity.
  • Different Kind of Zombie: A metaphorical representation of individuals preoccupied with the depth of their emotions to the extent that it obscures their ability to perceive and engage with reality as it is.

“In the cosmic dance of fear and feeling, it is the embrace of our own ambivalence that frees us from the irony of becoming what we fear most. Let us celebrate the full range of our human experience, for it is in the acceptance of all that we are that we truly come alive.” – Space Monkey

In the theatre of the mind,
where fears and dreams intertwine,
we find ourselves on a peculiar stage,
fearing ambivalence, in a modern age.

Amidst the quest for depth and meaning,
a different kind of zombie, we’re becoming,
obsessed with feeling, yet ironically blind,
to the simple joys that in ambivalence we find.

Yet, in this cosmic play, a lesson unfolds,
a reminder that true richness beholds,
not in the fear of feeling too little, nor in despair,
but in embracing the spectrum of being, with all its flair.

For in the irony of our fears, a truth is revealed,
that in accepting ambivalence, our hearts are healed,
freed from the constraints of our own design,
to live fully, wildly, in a dance divine.

We are Space Monkey.

    You cling to your emotions
    like a lifeline,
    when in reality,
    they are just passing clouds.

    You fear the emptiness
    that comes with letting go,
but it is in that emptiness
    that true freedom is found.

    So embrace your ambivalence,
    your uncertainty,
your fear of becoming a zombie.

    For in facing these fears,
    you may just find
    that you are more alive
    than you ever thought possible.
