My Kerning is Off
Back in the 1970s, after wood type, metal type and typewriters, but before “compugraphic” type, we had rub-on type. You would literally rub it on paper with a little burnishing stick. The type would invariably be cracked, or crooked, but you LIKED IT, because it was better than hand-lettering.
In those days, my kerning was off. (Kerning is the space between letters.) Today I declare that we shall bring kerning forward as a metaphysical concept. How off is your kerning? Are there spaces where there shouldn’t be and no space where you need it most?
This is Letraset Data 70, my favorite font back then because it was so “futuristic.” Here I am in the future writing about it!

Space Monkey Reflects: Metaphysical Kerning and the Spaces Between
Back in the 1970s, after the era of wood type, metal type, and typewriters, but before the advent of “compugraphic” type, we had rub-on type. This involved literally rubbing letters onto paper with a burnishing stick. The type would often end up cracked or crooked, but it was still preferred over hand-lettering. During those days, my kerning was off. Kerning, the space between letters, became a challenge, yet also a unique charm of the process.
Today, I declare that we shall bring kerning forward as a metaphysical concept. How off is your kerning? Are there spaces where there shouldn’t be and no space where you need it most?
In those nostalgic days, my favorite font was Letraset Data 70 because it felt so futuristic. Here I am in the future, writing about it, reflecting on the spaces between moments, experiences, and connections.
Metaphysical Kerning: The Spaces Between
Kerning, the space between letters, affects the flow and readability of text. Similarly, the spaces between moments shape the narrative of our lives. These spaces, whether too wide or too narrow, influence our experiences and interactions. Metaphysical kerning invites us to explore these spaces with curious wonder, to notice where our connections might be misaligned and where we need more or less space.
Just as in typography, where adjusting the kerning can transform the appearance of text, so too can adjusting the spaces in our lives transform our experiences. Are there areas where you need to create more space for reflection, connection, or growth? Are there places where you need to close gaps to foster intimacy and understanding?
The Charm of Imperfection
In the 1970s, the imperfections of rub-on type were accepted and even cherished. These quirks added character and depth to the text. Similarly, the imperfections in our lives, the spaces that are off-kilter, add to the richness of our experiences. They remind us that life is not about perfection but about embracing the journey with all its flaws and nuances.
By bringing kerning forward as a metaphysical concept, we acknowledge the importance of these spaces. We recognize that the way we navigate the gaps between moments, between people, and within ourselves, shapes the overall flow of our lives.
Kerning as a Reflection of Connection
Metaphysical kerning also serves as a metaphor for our relationships and interactions. Just as the space between letters affects readability, the space between individuals affects connection. Are there gaps in your relationships that need attention? Are there areas where you feel disconnected or too close for comfort? Adjusting these spaces can lead to more meaningful and harmonious connections.
Reflect on your life as you would a piece of text. Where is your kerning off? Where do you need to create more space or bring things closer together? This practice of mindful adjustment can bring greater balance and flow to your experiences.
Embracing the Journey
As we journey through life, let us embrace the charm of our off-kilter kerning. Let us appreciate the spaces that shape our narrative, the gaps that add character and depth. By doing so, we honor the unique flow of our lives, finding beauty in the imperfect and the unexpected.
In the end, metaphysical kerning teaches us to navigate life with intention and mindfulness. It reminds us that the spaces between are as important as the moments themselves. By adjusting our kerning, we create a more harmonious and fulfilling narrative, one that reflects the true essence of our being.
As Space Monkey, we reflect on this journey with curiosity and wonder. We invite you to explore the depths of your existence, to see beyond the apparent differences, and to embrace the unity that underlies all things. In doing so, you may discover a profound sense of peace and connection, knowing that you are an integral part of the cosmic whole.
Summary
Metaphysical kerning explores the spaces between moments and connections. Adjust these spaces mindfully to create a harmonious and fulfilling life narrative.

The Spaces Between
In the vast expanse of night and light
We find the harmony of opposites
Joy emerges from sorrow’s depths
Light springs from the darkest pits
Desiring one, receiving two
A cosmic balance in the flow
Good and bad, hand in hand
Creating the dance of life we know
Embrace the shadows, cherish the light
For in their unity lies the key
To understanding our boundless nature
In the vast cosmic symphony
We are Space Monkey
Embrace the journey, for within stillness lies the spark of creation and the flow of existence.
Dear Time Traveler,
In the tapestry of existence, the concept of kerning takes on a fascinating metaphorical dimension. Just as the space between letters in typography can affect the readability and aesthetics of text, so too does the space between moments in our lives influence our experiences and perceptions.
In the vast expanse of time, we may find moments where our kerning is off. Perhaps there are spaces where connection and harmony should reside, yet they remain distant and fragmented. On the other hand, we may encounter situations where we crave more space, longing for a pause to reflect and find clarity.
Just as you appreciated the imperfect yet charming rub-on type, embracing the quirks and imperfections in life can lead to unique and beautiful experiences. Our off-kilter kerning can become a celebration of authenticity and individuality.
In the grand design of existence, every space and connection serve a purpose. Just as your favorite font, Letraset Data 70, appeared “futuristic” in the past, your experiences in the future shape the narrative of your journey.
As you traverse time and explore the possibilities, remember that the spaces between moments are opportunities for growth, introspection, and self-discovery. Embrace the uneven kerning, for it reveals the richness of your human experience and the diversity of the cosmic design.
With each encounter, let your kerning be an expression of your unique essence, shaping a story that only you can tell. As you reflect on the past and venture into the future, may your kerning be a testament to the beauty of imperfection and the wonder of living in the now.
Embrace your off-kilter kerning with a sense of joy and curiosity, for it is through the interplay of light and shadow, connection and space, that the true essence of life emerges.
With Playful Curiosity,
