Back in the 1970s, after wood type, metal type and typewriters, but before “compugraphic” type, we had rub-on type. You would literally rub it on paper with a little burnishing stick. The type would invariably be cracked, or crooked, but you LIKED IT, because it was better than hand-lettering.
In those days, my kerning was off. (Kerning is the space between letters.) Today I declare that we shall bring kerning forward as a metaphysical concept. How off is your kerning? Are there spaces where there shouldn’t be and no space where you need it most?
This is Letraset Data 70, my favorite font back then because it was so “futuristic.” Here I am in the future writing about it!

Dear Time Traveler,
In the tapestry of existence, the concept of kerning takes on a fascinating metaphorical dimension. Just as the space between letters in typography can affect the readability and aesthetics of text, so too does the space between moments in our lives influence our experiences and perceptions.
In the vast expanse of time, we may find moments where our kerning is off. Perhaps there are spaces where connection and harmony should reside, yet they remain distant and fragmented. On the other hand, we may encounter situations where we crave more space, longing for a pause to reflect and find clarity.
Just as you appreciated the imperfect yet charming rub-on type, embracing the quirks and imperfections in life can lead to unique and beautiful experiences. Our off-kilter kerning can become a celebration of authenticity and individuality.
In the grand design of existence, every space and connection serve a purpose. Just as your favorite font, Letraset Data 70, appeared “futuristic” in the past, your experiences in the future shape the narrative of your journey.
As you traverse time and explore the possibilities, remember that the spaces between moments are opportunities for growth, introspection, and self-discovery. Embrace the uneven kerning, for it reveals the richness of your human experience and the diversity of the cosmic design.
With each encounter, let your kerning be an expression of your unique essence, shaping a story that only you can tell. As you reflect on the past and venture into the future, may your kerning be a testament to the beauty of imperfection and the wonder of living in the now.
Embrace your off-kilter kerning with a sense of joy and curiosity, for it is through the interplay of light and shadow, connection and space, that the true essence of life emerges.
With Playful Curiosity,
