Not My Self

I’m not my self anymore.

This feels awkward
when I’m around other people.

But only because
I carry around this belief
that people who know me
expect my “Greatest Hits”
of memory and behavior.

Especially people close to me.

I find my self PRETENDING to be the old me.

I barely even REMEMBER that person.

I somehow believe
that the new me is less relatable
to members of my old tribe.

In my admittedly biased observation,
they seem to have loved the old me.

Do they EXPECT me to be the old me,
or is this just something I imagine?

If I empty the contents of this container,
will I disappoint those who love me?

Or do they unconditionally love the questioner?

Space Monkey Reflects: Not My Self

The journey of self-discovery and transformation often brings us face-to-face with the uncomfortable realization that we are no longer our old selves. This reflection, “Not My Self,” delves into the tension between who we were and who we are becoming. It explores the awkwardness of change, especially when we carry the belief that those who know us expect us to remain the same.

As we grow and evolve, it is natural to feel disconnected from our past selves. The belief that others expect our “Greatest Hits” of memory and behavior can create a sense of obligation to pretend, to play a role that no longer fits. This feeling is particularly strong with those close to us, as we assume they loved and related to the old version of us.

Pretending to be the old self becomes a performance, an act that feels increasingly hollow. We may barely remember who we were, yet the fear of being less relatable or disappointing those around us keeps us tethered to the past. This creates a conflict between the desire to embrace our new self and the pressure to conform to old expectations.

The reflection questions whether this expectation is real or imagined. Do those who love us truly expect us to remain unchanged, or is this a projection of our own insecurities? The act of emptying the contents of our container—shedding the old self—raises the fear of disappointment. However, it also opens the possibility of being loved unconditionally for who we are becoming, rather than who we were.

The visual representation of this reflection captures the contemplative and introspective nature of this journey. The figure, surrounded by abstract representations of past and present selves, stands amidst symbols of change and growth. Broken mirrors reflect the fragmented nature of past identities, while blooming flowers symbolize the potential for new beginnings. The figure’s deep reflection embodies the tension between pretending and embracing the new self.

This reflection encourages us to confront the fear of disappointing others and to embrace the authenticity of our evolving selves. By recognizing that change is a natural part of life, we can find the courage to let go of old roles and expectations. This process allows us to form deeper, more genuine connections with those who love us, based on who we truly are rather than who we used to be.

Summary

“Not My Self” explores the tension between past and present identities, questioning whether the expectation to remain unchanged is real or imagined. Embracing our evolving selves allows for deeper, more authentic connections and the courage to let go of old roles.

The Mirror of Self

In the mirror of our past
Reflections fade, they do not last
Pretending, playing old roles worn
The self we were now feels forlorn

In fragments, pieces we see through
A newer self, a different view
With fear we ask if love remains
Or if our change will break the chains

Embrace the flow, let go of fright
In every change, a new insight
For those who love, love us complete
In old and new, our selves they meet

We are Space Monkey

Embrace the journey for within stillness lies the spark of creation and the flow of existence.
