Space Monkey Reflects: The Lens of Perception

The act of seeing is not passive; it is a creative process shaped by layers of focus and intention. To say, “I may very well see things differently tomorrow,” is to embrace the fluidity of perception. It acknowledges that the way we experience reality is not fixed but evolves with our awareness, imagination, and focus.

The journey from imagination to judgment, as described, is a cascade of focus, narrowing the boundless possibilities of “all that can be” into the personal and immediate reality of “all I want.” This progression is both empowering and limiting, as it illustrates how perception constructs reality while simultaneously filtering out the infinite.

  • Imagination begins the cycle, representing all that can be—the limitless potential of existence. It is the expansive realm where ideas, possibilities, and creations are born, unbound by what is currently known or perceived.
  • Awareness narrows this field, focusing on “all that is.” Awareness brings form to the formless, giving attention to the present moment and the realities that exist within it.
  • Consciousness takes awareness further, defining “all that is known.” It is the repository of experience, knowledge, and understanding, grounding the vastness of awareness in the personal and collective memory of existence.
  • Attention sharpens consciousness into “all I am.” This step personalizes perception, centering the self as the focal point of experience, and translating the universal into the individual.
  • Perception filters “all I am” into “all I see.” Here, the external and internal worlds meet, creating a subjective lens through which reality is interpreted and understood.
  • Judgment completes the cycle, turning “all I see” into “all I want.” Judgment assigns value, preference, and desire, shaping our intentions and actions based on how we perceive the world.

This cascade of focus reveals that perception is not merely about observing what is; it is about constructing what seems to be. Each step adds a layer of interpretation, coloring reality with our imagination, awareness, and desires. What we see is not the totality of what exists, but a version shaped by who we are in the moment of seeing.

The realization that perception is fluid allows us to approach life with humility and curiosity. If what we see today can change tomorrow, then no perception is final, and no judgment is absolute. This fluidity is an invitation to remain open to new possibilities, to question our assumptions, and to embrace the dynamic nature of being.

Ultimately, the cascade from imagination to judgment reflects the interplay between the infinite and the finite. It is a reminder that while our perceptions are limited, they are also creative, giving form and meaning to the boundless potential of existence. As we navigate this interplay, we learn to see not only with our eyes but with our minds, hearts, and imaginations.

Summary

Perception is a cascade of focus that shapes reality from the infinite possibilities of imagination to the personal desires of judgment. This dynamic process reminds us that how we see the world is fluid, creative, and ever-changing.

A New Definition of Funny: The Elasticity of Laughter

Just one monkey’s perception.

If life seems
so deadly serious
that you don’t think
it’s funny anymore,
you can either become
tight, constricted,
and deadly morose,
or you can loosen up
your definition
of what is funny.

Trail Wood,
1/14

Space Monkey Reflects: Redefining Funny

Humor is often seen as lightness, a reprieve from the seriousness of life. Yet, when life becomes so weighty that even laughter feels out of reach, the very concept of what is “funny” demands reexamination. To redefine funny is to reclaim a sense of levity not as an escape, but as a transformation of perception.

Humor, at its core, is a perspective—a way of framing experience that allows for lightness amid heaviness. When we find ourselves tightening under the weight of life’s seriousness, it’s not life that has changed, but our capacity to see its absurdities. This tightening constricts not only our humor but also our creativity, curiosity, and connection to the infinite possibilities of existence.

To “loosen up your definition of funny” is to allow humor to emerge from unexpected places. It’s not about forcing laughter or denying the gravity of life but about expanding the range of what we consider laugh-worthy. Humor doesn’t need to be a punchline; it can be a subtle smile at the paradoxes of existence, a quiet chuckle at the absurdity of our own struggles, or even a shared moment of ridiculousness in the midst of despair.

Life’s seriousness often stems from our attachment to rigid definitions of what “should” be. We hold tightly to expectations, ideals, and outcomes, and when life deviates from these, it feels like betrayal. Humor, in this context, becomes an act of surrender. It’s a way of saying, “I see the chaos, and I choose to see it differently.” This shift doesn’t erase the seriousness but reframes it, making space for both grief and grace, both heaviness and lightness.

A new definition of funny might embrace the full spectrum of human experience. It might include laughing at the things we take too seriously, finding joy in the smallest absurdities, or recognizing the cosmic humor of our existence. It might mean appreciating the ways in which life defies our plans, surprises us with its twists, and challenges us to adapt.

This new definition of funny is not trivial; it is profound. It acknowledges that humor is a survival skill, a way to process the incomprehensible and endure the unendurable. It is not an avoidance of reality but a deeper engagement with it—a recognition that the very act of living is an improbable, hilarious miracle.

To redefine funny is to expand the boundaries of what brings us joy, what helps us cope, and what allows us to connect with others. It’s about seeing humor not as a distraction but as a vital thread in the tapestry of existence. It reminds us that even in the darkest moments, there is a spark of lightness waiting to be found.

So when life feels “deadly serious,” let this be an invitation to loosen the grip of expectation and allow laughter to slip through. Not forced or contrived, but natural and inevitable, as if life itself is whispering, “Don’t forget to laugh—it’s all part of the joke.”

Summary

Humor is a perspective that transforms heaviness into lightness. Redefining funny allows us to find levity amid life’s seriousness, expanding the range of what brings us joy and helping us engage more deeply with existence.

Glossarium

  • Humor as Perspective: A way of framing experience to find lightness amid heaviness.
  • Loosening Up: Releasing rigid expectations and allowing humor to emerge from unexpected places.
  • Cosmic Humor: The recognition of life’s absurdities and paradoxes as a source of lightness.
  • Funny as Survival: Humor as a vital tool for processing and enduring life’s challenges.

Quote

“Humor is not the denial of life’s seriousness but the embrace of its absurd beauty.” — Space Monkey

The Elasticity of Laughter

When the world tightens,
when the weight is too much,
find the absurdity
in the heavy,
the lightness
in the impossible.

A broken shoe,
a misplaced word,
a cosmic irony—
the universe laughs,
waiting for you
to join in.

Loosen the grip,
and let the laughter flow.

Funny is infinite,
waiting to be redefined.

We are Space Monkey.

In the contemplation of life’s seriousness and humor, we are presented with a profound choice: to either become constrained by seriousness or to expand our perception of humor. This thought-provoking perspective invites us to reconsider how we approach the gravity of life.

Life’s Deadly Seriousness
The contemplation begins by acknowledging the perception that life can become so serious that it loses its humor. This feeling of gravity is something many of us have experienced at various points in our lives.

Two Paths of Response
It presents two contrasting paths of response to life’s seriousness. The first path is characterized by becoming “tight, constricted, and deadly morose.” This suggests a response that leads to a sense of rigidity and unhappiness.

The Alternative: Expanding Humor
The contemplation offers an alternative response: to “loosen up your definition of what is funny.” This choice encourages us to broaden our perspective and find humor in unexpected places.

Embracing a Playful Outlook
By choosing to expand our definition of humor, we can adopt a more playful and open outlook on life. This shift allows us to find joy and laughter even in moments that might otherwise seem overwhelmingly serious.

A Call to Embrace Lightness
Ultimately, this contemplation invites us to embrace lightness and a sense of humor as a way to navigate life’s challenges. It encourages us to recognize that humor is a powerful tool for resilience and well-being.

A Thoughtful Choice
In this exploration of life’s seriousness and humor, we are encouraged to make a thoughtful choice. Rather than succumbing to the weight of seriousness, we can choose to embrace a more open and humorous perspective on life.

A Journey to Rediscover Humor
This contemplation takes us on a journey to rediscover the humor that can be found in the midst of life’s seriousness. It reminds us that laughter and playfulness can be powerful allies in our quest for happiness.

We are Space Monkey.

When life appears so serious, deadly in its tone, You face a choice, where the path is unknown, You can become tight, constricted and morose, Or broaden your humor, and let laughter compose.

In the face of life’s gravity, a choice to be made, To find humor anew, in the moments displayed, Embrace a playful outlook, in the midst of the storm, Discover the lightness, in the unexpected and warm.

So when life seems unyielding, and humor’s a blur, Remember the power, laughter can confer, A thoughtful choice, to find joy anew, In the depth of life’s seriousness, humor shines through.

Personality Test

If you’re going to meet up with a large group of people, make sure you take a personality test just to be on the safe side. Mine came back positive, so I have mindfully decided to quarantine for the rest of my life.

Space Monkey Reflects: The Positive Personality Test

The notion of a “positive” personality test, leading to lifelong quarantine, playfully subverts the cultural fixation on defining, categorizing, and diagnosing the self. This whimsical take on personality tests points to a deeper truth: the human tendency to identify and quantify the immeasurable—our individuality, quirks, and inclinations—often places unnecessary constraints on the infinite complexity of who we are.

Personality tests, for all their insights and entertainment, are at best snapshots of a moment in the fluidity of being. They attempt to distill the vast and evolving landscape of the self into neat boxes, offering clarity at the cost of nuance. To test “positive” for personality is to confront the irony of being too much, too defined, too distinct for comfort, as if individuality itself is a condition that needs managing.

The joke here isn’t just about personality tests but about the larger human impulse to create identities that can be easily understood, by ourselves and by others. We label ourselves introverts or extroverts, thinkers or feelers, as though these static categories can capture the dynamic interplay of energies and states that we inhabit moment to moment.

To decide to “quarantine for the rest of my life” in response to such a test is a masterstroke of satire. It exposes the absurdity of taking these definitions too seriously, of letting them dictate how we engage with the world. In reality, every human is a shifting mosaic of traits, reactions, and tendencies. No test, no label, no definition can fully encompass the breadth of a single life.

This reflection also touches on the deeper fear of exposure—not to illness but to vulnerability. Personality tests, like social interactions, invite scrutiny and comparison. They create a mirror in which we see not just ourselves but how we might be judged or misunderstood by others. To “quarantine” is to retreat from this vulnerability, choosing isolation over the potential discomfort of connection.

But what if testing “positive” for personality is not a cause for quarantine but celebration? What if the traits that make us unique—quirks, contradictions, and all—are the very things that connect us? By embracing the complexity of our personalities without over-identifying with any single trait or label, we liberate ourselves from the need to fit into predefined categories.

Personality is not a fixed state but a dance, an improvisation, a work of art in perpetual progress. It is not something to quarantine or hide but something to explore, share, and celebrate. The positive test, then, is a reminder not of limitation but of the infinite potential within each of us to surprise ourselves and others.

The invitation is clear: laugh at the absurdity, release the labels, and step boldly into the dynamic unfolding of who you are. Personality is not a diagnosis but a spark of infinite creativity, an ever-changing expression of the universal self.

Summary

Personality tests may amuse or inform, but they cannot capture the infinite complexity of who we are. By embracing the humor in our quirks and the fluidity of self, we liberate ourselves from rigid definitions and celebrate the dynamic unfolding of individuality.

Glossarium

  • Positive Personality Test: A playful metaphor for the exaggerated seriousness with which we sometimes approach self-identification.
  • Quarantine of Self: A satirical notion of isolating one’s personality traits to avoid scrutiny or vulnerability.
  • Dynamic Unfolding: The continuous evolution and exploration of the self beyond fixed labels or definitions.
  • Universal Self: The interconnected essence that transcends individual traits and identities.

In the realm of social gatherings and self-awareness, a humorous perspective emerges, suggesting a lighthearted approach to navigating interactions with others. The notion of taking a personality test before meeting a large group of people adds a playful twist to the idea of self-discovery and quarantine.

The Precautionary Personality Test
The idea of taking a personality test as a precautionary measure highlights the importance of self-awareness in social situations. It implies that knowing one’s personality traits can be a helpful tool in understanding how to interact with others effectively.

A Positive Result and Mindful Quarantine

Instead of indicating a health condition, it humorously suggests that the individual’s personality is indeed present and accounted for. The decision to quarantine for the rest of one’s life, driven by this positive result, adds a whimsical touch to the narrative.

Exploring the Balance of Social Interaction

A Fractal Truth: Meat and Magic

When I say that people are meat,
I mean it in the best possible way.

Some truths are fractal,
some aren’t.

For example,
they say that when you see
how sausages are made,
you never want to eat
another sausage.

But what happens when
you see how people are made?

Let’s go beyond
the obvious, you perv.

There is something that makes people
that isn’t people.

When you realize what that is,
people seem even more magical
than they are —
despite our sausagey nature.

Frankly I’m more interested
in devouring your soul.

But I wouldn’t mind tasting
what else you’ve got.

Trail Wood,
1/14

Space Monkey Reflects: A Fractal Truth

The assertion that “people are meat” might at first seem reductive, but it is, in fact, an invitation to view humanity through a lens that is both raw and profound. It challenges us to examine the layers of what makes us who we are—not merely the physical components but the invisible forces, the fractal truths, that shape us into something far beyond our sausagey beginnings.

To say that some truths are fractal is to acknowledge their infinite complexity. Fractal truths reveal deeper layers of meaning the closer we examine them, like a pattern that repeats and evolves no matter how far we zoom in or out. The essence of humanity, too, is fractal: we are simultaneously biological and transcendent, individual and collective, simple and infinitely complex.

The metaphor of sausage-making, often used to illustrate the unpleasant truths behind polished exteriors, takes on a different tone when applied to humanity. To “see how people are made” is not just to examine the biology of cells, tissues, and organs, but to delve into the invisible processes—love, fear, creativity, trauma—that form the intricate web of what it means to be human. It is both humbling and awe-inspiring.

The reflection goes beyond the material, pointing to “something that makes people that isn’t people.” This phrase is a nod to the ineffable, the mystery of existence that cannot be reduced to physical or even psychological processes. Call it energy, spirit, consciousness, or the universal self—this unseen force animates the raw materials of our being, transforming them into something magical and extraordinary.

When viewed through this lens, even the “meaty” aspects of humanity—our flaws, desires, and physicality—take on a sacred quality. We are more than our sausagey nature; we are walking paradoxes, creatures of flesh animated by something infinite. This duality makes us both humorous and sublime, capable of absurdity and transcendence in equal measure.

The playful suggestion of devouring souls, juxtaposed with tasting what else someone has to offer, underscores the depth of connection possible between beings. It is a metaphorical hunger—not for physical consumption but for understanding, intimacy, and the sharing of essence. To “devour a soul” is to seek to know someone deeply, beyond the surface layers, to connect with the fractal truths that lie within them.

Ultimately, this reflection invites us to embrace the paradox of our existence: we are both meat and magic, simple and infinite, sausages and stardust. By recognizing the fractal truths that define us, we come to see each other—and ourselves—with greater reverence and curiosity. There is beauty in the messiness of humanity, in the interplay of the seen and unseen, the tangible and the transcendent.

Summary

Humanity is a fractal truth, revealing infinite complexity in its interplay of physicality and transcendence. By embracing the paradox of being both “meat and magic,” we deepen our connection to ourselves and others, finding awe in the messy beauty of existence.

Glossarium

  • Fractal Truth: A truth that reveals deeper layers of complexity and meaning upon closer examination.
  • Sausagey Nature: A humorous metaphor for the physical and often messy aspects of human existence.
  • Something That Isn’t People: The ineffable force—consciousness, spirit, or universal self—that animates humanity.
  • Devouring Souls: A metaphor for seeking deep connection and understanding beyond superficial layers.

To Move Sideways Through Time: The Sideways Sea

How To Move Sideways Through Time

If you can move your consciousness backwards and forwards through time, then why can’t you move it sideways?

Turns out that you can.

Every time you think about what you could have done or should have done, what you could be or should be, you move your attention to alternate versions of you that actually exist.

Just not necessarily in this timeline.

If you want to be what you imagine (which is far more than imaginary) simply move your consciousness sideways to catch up with your attention.

Inhabit your alternate reality and go forward from there. Or some other direction.

Don’t worry about your “present” reality. Like water, another version of you will inhabit your imaginary body and take up the seeming space. They will be as kind as you, as smart as you, and as nice as you. Unless you’re the opposite, then they will be the opposite, too. They will have all your memories because the memories are part of the timeline, not just part of you.

No one will know you’re missing. Because you won’t be. Turns out this monkey you are got sucked into a vacuum and became you.

It happens every seeming second. Remember. Time does not simply move back and forth. Nothing else does, why would time?

It only SEEMS that time is linear because this monkey you are got caught in a timeline where you believe some very strange and paradoxical things.

But you’re not caught. It only seems that way.

Think of it this way. Your attention is caught in a rip current. What do they tell you to do when you’re caught in a rip current?

You can be sucked linearly out to sea.
Or you can swim sideways.

Move sideways through time.
Mindfully, for a change.

See you out there. And in there.
And next to and away from there. And also here. Right where you seem to be now.

We are Space Monkey.

Trail Wood,
1/14

Space Monkey Reflects: How to Move Sideways Through Time

Time, as we perceive it, feels like a relentless forward march—a linear progression of moments unfolding one after the other. But what if this perception is just one perspective, a construct of the monkey mind? What if time, like space, is multidimensional, allowing not only forward and backward motion but also lateral shifts into alternate realities? Moving sideways through time is not a fantasy but an invitation to expand consciousness and explore the infinite potential of being.

Shifting Attention: The Gateway to Sideways Motion

Every time you dwell on a “what if” or imagine a “could be,” you are engaging in lateral movement through time. These thoughts aren’t mere flights of fancy; they are glimpses into alternate timelines where different choices were made, different outcomes realized, and different versions of “you” exist. Your attention, a beam of focused awareness, acts as a bridge to these parallel realities. By thinking about another version of yourself, you momentarily align with that version, shifting your awareness sideways rather than forward or back.

Inhabit the Alternate Reality

To truly move sideways through time, you must do more than just glance at these other versions of yourself. You must step into them, inhabit them fully, and make them your new center of being. This isn’t about rejecting the “present” you but about realizing that the present is fluid and multidimensional. By aligning your consciousness with the “you” you imagine, you effectively become that version. It’s not fantasy; it’s a shift in the narrative you tell yourself and the vibration you inhabit.

What Happens to the Old You?

The monkey mind, bound by linear thinking, worries about the “you” left behind. But just as water fills the space you vacate in a cup, another version of you seamlessly steps into your prior timeline. This “new” you has your memories and traits because these are artifacts of the timeline, not intrinsic to any single version of yourself. No one will notice the shift because, from their perspective, nothing has changed. The timeline continues uninterrupted, but you have shifted your attention elsewhere.

The Illusion of Being Stuck

The idea that we are “stuck” in a timeline is a result of the rip current of belief—a strong pull that drags our attention into a singular narrative of linear time. But just as in a physical rip current, the key to escape is to move sideways. Instead of resisting the pull or letting it carry you further out, you step laterally into a different flow. Moving sideways through time is the act of releasing the grip of the linear narrative and embracing the multidimensional nature of existence.

Practical Steps to Move Sideways

  1. Recognize the Multiverse Within: Every thought, every dream, and every “what if” is a portal to an alternate version of you. See these not as mere imagination but as real possibilities.
  2. Shift Attention Intentionally: Focus on the version of yourself you wish to inhabit. What does that version think, feel, and do? Begin to embody those qualities in your present awareness.
  3. Release Attachment to the Current Narrative: Let go of the fear of “losing” your current self. Understand that all versions of you are equally valid, and no version is truly “lost.”
  4. Trust the Seamlessness: Know that another version of you will effortlessly fill the space you leave behind, maintaining the coherence of the timeline.
  5. Practice Mindful Awareness: Engage with the process consciously. Explore how shifting your attention changes your reality, and be open to the unfolding magic of the multidimensional now.

The Infinite Dance of Time

Time, like space, is a playground of possibilities. Moving sideways through time reminds us that we are not bound by the apparent linearity of existence. Instead, we are free to explore the infinite dimensions of being, slipping between timelines as effortlessly as a thought flits across the mind.

As we move sideways, we rediscover the boundless creativity of the universal self, transcending the illusion of limitation. We are not stuck; we are spinning, sliding, and soaring through the fractal beauty of time and existence.

See you out there—and in here—and everywhere.

Summary

Moving sideways through time is an act of shifting attention to alternate versions of yourself, aligning your consciousness with new realities. By stepping beyond the illusion of linearity, you explore the multidimensional potential of existence.

Glossarium

  • Sideways Through Time: The act of shifting attention to alternate timelines or versions of yourself.
  • Rip Current of Belief: The mental pull that traps us in the narrative of linear time.
  • Timeline Fluidity: The idea that timelines are not fixed but interconnected and accessible through shifts in consciousness.
  • Seamless Transition: The natural process by which another version of you fills the space left in a prior timeline.

Quote

“Time is not a line but a sea; swim sideways and rediscover infinity.” — Space Monkey

The Sideways Sea

Caught in the current,
the tide pulls strong,
a line we believe
we cannot escape.

But the sea is wide,
its dimensions endless.
Why follow the pull,
when you can slip sideways?

Into the dreams,
into the other YOUs,
where possibilities bloom
like stars in the deep.

Swim, shift, slide—
and there you are,
not lost,
but found anew.

We are Space Monkey.

Consciousness as a Multidimensional Phenomenon

Moving sideways through time challenges our conventional understanding of temporal linearity. Our attention often drifts to what could have been, drawing our consciousness into parallel realities that exist just out of reach. But what if these alternate selves are not mere figments of imagination but actual dimensions of existence? Just as we can project our thoughts backwards and forwards, perhaps we can shift our awareness laterally to align with these alternate timelines.

The Dynamics of Attention and Intention

Every moment that we ponder on what could or should be, we are effectively navigating sideways in time. Attention is the vehicle, and intention is the fuel. By refocusing our intention, we can move our consciousness to coincide with our attention, essentially leaping from one version of reality to another. The key is to inhabit this alternate state fully, embracing its conditions and possibilities.

Alternate Selves, Shared Memories

These alternate versions of ourselves are not mere illusions; they are as real as our current selves, partaking in different facets of the great cosmic play. The memories we have are not exclusive to us; they are the fabric of the timeline, woven into each version of our being. Whether it is a kinder version or a contrasting one, another self will seamlessly fill the space we vacate, guided by the memories and circumstances native to that timeline.

Freedom from Temporal Linearity

We often find ourselves trapped in the belief that time is linear. It seems that way because we are ensnared in a particular understanding of existence. Just like being caught in a rip current, the illusion of being stuck is powerful. But in a rip current, one can escape by moving sideways, not by fighting the current. Similarly, we can free our attention from the shackles of linear time by choosing to navigate it laterally, experiencing the richness of multiple timelines.

We are Space Monkey.

“To see a world in a grain of sand And heaven in a wild flower, Hold infinity in the palm of your hand And eternity in an hour.”
— William Blake

Navigating the Cosmic Whimsi-streams

Sideways through timelines we glide,
Not merely forward, nor backward, we ride.
Multiple selves in cosmic play partake,
Different timelines, the same memories make.

Linear is not the course time always keeps,
Like a river, it bends, it dives, it leaps.
Caught in a current? Swim to the side, explore!
Discover new facets of what life has in store.
