Killing Trees: Embracing the Ephemeral

It seems I have strong feelings about books.
Particularly printed ones.

There are piles of books
by authors who will never be read.
A self-indulgent waste of paper
in service of someone’s ego.

Most likely, the authors
actually believed that
they were helping others
in some small way.

Their words gave their lives purpose,
and killing trees was the proof they needed.

The unread books of these authors
are incinerated along with
the unread books of comparatively famous authors.

Who decides which authors are remembered
and which authors are forgotten?
Truth is, all writers are forgotten eventually.

I don’t wish to judge myself
on whether someone would want
to remember what I have to say.

Like all writers, I write for me.
To be forgotten by me.

If I touch someone along the way,
that’s a bonus.

South Windham,
7/18

Space Monkey Reflects: Killing Trees

“It seems I have strong feelings about books. Particularly printed ones.” The tactile, tangible nature of printed books evokes a strong emotional response. There is something profoundly human about holding a book, feeling its weight, and turning its pages. Yet, this connection comes at a cost—trees are sacrificed for the sake of words that may never be read.

The Reality of Unread Books

“There are piles of books by authors who will never be read. A self-indulgent waste of paper in service of someone’s ego.” This harsh assessment reflects the sobering reality of the literary world. Many authors pour their hearts into their work, believing they are contributing to the greater good. Yet, these efforts often go unnoticed, their books languishing unread.

The Purpose Behind Words

“Most likely, the authors actually believed that they were helping others in some small way. Their words gave their lives purpose, and killing trees was the proof they needed.” The act of writing provides purpose and meaning for many authors. The physical manifestation of their thoughts and ideas in printed form serves as validation of their efforts, a testament to their existence.

The Fate of Unread Books

“The unread books of these authors are incinerated along with the unread books of comparatively famous authors.” This stark imagery highlights the impermanence of written works. Regardless of fame or obscurity, all books face the same fate—eventual oblivion. The flames symbolize the transient nature of literary legacy, reducing all efforts to ashes.

The Judgment of Memory

“Who decides which authors are remembered and which authors are forgotten? Truth is, all writers are forgotten eventually.” The criteria for literary immortality are elusive and often arbitrary. Fame and remembrance are fleeting, with time erasing the legacies of even the most celebrated authors. This realization can be both humbling and liberating.

Writing for the Self

“I don’t wish to judge myself on whether someone would want to remember what I have to say. Like all writers, I write for me. To be forgotten by me.” Writing, at its core, is a deeply personal endeavor. It is an act of self-expression and introspection, a way to process thoughts and emotions. The primary audience is often the writer themselves, with external validation being secondary.

The Bonus of Connection

“If I touch someone along the way, that’s a bonus.” The possibility of resonating with others is an added benefit, not the primary goal. The true value lies in the act of writing itself, in the journey of creating and reflecting. If the words happen to touch another soul, it is a serendipitous bonus.

Embracing the Ephemeral

As Space Monkey, we embrace the ephemeral nature of writing and creation. We understand that the worth of our words is not measured by their longevity or their readership but by the authenticity and intention behind them. The act of writing is an expression of our inner selves, a way to connect with the vast tapestry of existence.

The Legacy of the Moment

In embracing the transient nature of literary legacy, we find freedom. We are liberated from the need for external validation and can focus on the pure joy of creation. Each word, each page, each book is a moment captured in time, a reflection of our thoughts and emotions at a particular point in our journey.

In the fleeting nature of words, we find our place in the cosmos. We are Space Monkey.

Summary

Printed books evoke strong emotions but come at a cost. Many remain unread, highlighting the transient nature of literary legacy. Writing is a personal journey, with the primary value found in the act itself. Resonating with others is a bonus.

Glossarium

Ephemeral Nature: The transient and fleeting quality of written works and their impact.

Literary Legacy: The lasting impact and remembrance of an author’s work, often subject to time and societal changes.

Self-Expression: The act of conveying thoughts and emotions through writing, primarily for personal reflection and understanding.

Quote

“The worth of our words is not measured by their longevity or readership but by the authenticity and intention behind them.” — Space Monkey

Poem: The Ashes of Words

In the quiet of the library
Where books lie still and cold
Lies the essence of our being
In stories yet untold

The pages slowly gather dust
Their words a silent plea
To touch a heart, to stir a mind
In vast eternity

Yet many tomes remain unread
Their purpose left unsung
Incinerated dreams and hopes
To which the trees belong

But in the act of writing down
We find our truest voice
An echo in the cosmic flow
A moment to rejoice

For though the flames may take our words
And time may dim their glow
The legacy is in the act
Of letting our truth show

We are Space Monkey

Self Diagnostic: The Morning Audit

This happens every morning
just before I write.

Every morning
when I arise,
I unconsciously audit
my state of mind,
and my state of being.

A self-diagnostic routine runs.

I notice aches, pains,
review the prior evening,
call up the day planner,
pass a little judgement,
and arrive at a feeling.

Now that I notice
that the test is running,
I can notice the program itself.

I notice that there’s
a natural inclination in me
to look for the negatives first.

Usually the program
locks up on the negatives
and I rarely get to the positives.

Until my coffee is done.
Reboot, alt, command, shift.

Space Monkey Reflects: Self Diagnostic

“This happens every morning just before I write.” The ritual of self-diagnosis is a familiar routine for many, a moment of introspection that sets the tone for the day. It is a quiet audit of the mind and body, a way to gauge one’s readiness to face the world.

The Morning Audit

“Every morning when I arise, I unconsciously audit my state of mind, and my state of being.” This routine is an automatic process, a self-diagnostic check that assesses both mental and physical states. It is a moment of self-awareness, where one takes stock of their condition and prepares for the day’s challenges.

Noticing the Program

“Now that I notice that the test is running, I can notice the program itself.” Becoming aware of this self-diagnostic process allows us to see the patterns and tendencies within it. We can observe how we evaluate our state and the biases that influence our assessment.

The Tendency Toward Negativity

“I notice that there’s a natural inclination in me to look for the negatives first. Usually the program locks up on the negatives and I rarely get to the positives.” This tendency to focus on the negative aspects is a common psychological pattern. Our minds often dwell on what is wrong, what hurts, or what needs fixing, overshadowing the positive aspects of our state.

The Reboot Process

“Until my coffee is done. Reboot, alt, command, shift.” This metaphorical reboot represents a shift in perspective. The act of having a morning coffee can symbolize taking a moment to reset, to let go of the initial negative focus and allow a more balanced view to emerge. It is a simple ritual that aids in shifting the mental state from negativity to a more neutral or positive outlook.

The Importance of Balance

As Space Monkey, we recognize the importance of this self-diagnostic routine. It is essential to check in with ourselves, to understand our state of mind and body. However, it is equally important to strive for balance, to acknowledge the positive aspects and not let the negatives dominate our perspective.

Embracing Self-Awareness

The process of self-diagnosis is a form of self-awareness. It allows us to be in tune with our needs, our strengths, and our areas of concern. By becoming conscious of this routine, we can make intentional adjustments to improve our well-being and mindset.

The Power of Rituals

Rituals, like the morning coffee, play a significant role in our mental and emotional health. They provide structure, comfort, and moments of pause that can help us reset and refocus. Embracing these small rituals can enhance our daily routines and support our overall mental health.

Finding Positivity

By actively seeking out the positive aspects of our state, we can create a more balanced and constructive outlook. This doesn’t mean ignoring the negatives but rather ensuring they do not overshadow the good. It is about finding harmony and fostering a mindset that supports growth and well-being.

In the balance of self-diagnosis, we find our place in the cosmos. We are Space Monkey.

Summary

Self-diagnosis is a routine that helps gauge mental and physical states. Focusing on both positive and negative aspects brings balance. Small rituals, like morning coffee, aid in resetting and refocusing.

Glossarium

Self-Diagnostic: The process of assessing one’s mental and physical state, often done subconsciously.

Morning Audit: A routine check of one’s condition upon waking up, setting the tone for the day.

Reboot Process: A metaphor for shifting perspective, often aided by simple rituals like having coffee.

Quote

“By actively seeking out the positive aspects of our state, we can create a more balanced and constructive outlook.” — Space Monkey

Poem: The Morning Audit

In the dawn of early light
I check my state within
A self-diagnostic ritual
To see where I begin

I notice aches and pains
The echoes of the night
The plans that lay ahead
And thoughts that take their flight

I see the inclination
To dwell on what is wrong
But as the coffee brews
I find a morning song

A shift in my perspective
A reboot of the mind
To balance out the negatives
And see what good I find

In this daily self-enquiry
I find my way to peace
A morning audit of my soul
Where worries find release

If You Don’t Love You: The Journey Within

If you don’t love you,
no one else will.

If you don’t feel
the love you desire
within yourself,
then there’s no point in
looking anywhere else.

Sorry to be so harsh,
but it’s true.

Nobody is going to give you
the love you desire except you.

If you believe otherwise,
then you’re fooling yourself.

You are the lover of you.

You may receive love from another,
but not until you set yourself straight.

If don’t love you, no one else will.

South Windham,
7/17

Space Monkey Reflects: If You Don’t Love You

If you don’t love you, no one else will. This simple yet profound statement serves as a cornerstone for understanding the essence of self-love and its critical role in our lives. As Space Monkey, we delve into the transformative power of loving oneself and the impact it has on receiving love from others.

The Foundation of Self-Love

Self-love is the foundation upon which all other forms of love are built. It is the recognition of our inherent worth and the acceptance of ourselves as we are. When we cultivate self-love, we create a space within us that is filled with compassion, understanding, and acceptance. This inner reservoir of love becomes the source from which we draw when interacting with the world.

“If you don’t feel the love you desire within yourself, then there’s no point in looking anywhere else.” This harsh truth underscores the importance of turning inward to find the love we seek. External validation and affection cannot fill the void left by a lack of self-love. Instead, we must nurture and cultivate love within ourselves to truly experience it from others.

The Illusion of External Love

“Nobody is going to give you the love you desire except you.” This statement challenges the common belief that love from others can complete us. While receiving love from others is a beautiful and enriching experience, it cannot replace the love we must first find within ourselves. Without self-love, external love may feel hollow or insufficient, as it cannot fill the gap left by our lack of self-acceptance.

“You are the lover of you.” This powerful affirmation reminds us that the primary source of love in our lives is ourselves. By embracing this truth, we take responsibility for our own happiness and well-being. We stop seeking external validation and start building a loving relationship with ourselves.

The Journey to Self-Love

“You may receive love from another, but not until you set yourself straight.” This statement highlights the journey of self-discovery and healing that leads to self-love. It requires introspection, self-compassion, and the willingness to confront and heal our inner wounds. This journey is not always easy, but it is essential for creating a foundation of self-love.

As we embark on this journey, we learn to appreciate our strengths and accept our flaws. We recognize that self-love is not about perfection but about embracing our humanity. This acceptance allows us to build a deeper connection with ourselves, fostering a sense of inner peace and fulfillment.

The Reflection of Self-Love

“If you don’t love you, no one else will.” This concluding statement reinforces the idea that our ability to receive love from others is directly linked to our ability to love ourselves. When we love and accept ourselves, we create an energy that attracts love from others. Our relationships become more authentic and fulfilling, as they are built on a foundation of mutual respect and self-worth.

By loving ourselves, we set the standard for how we want to be treated. We communicate our boundaries and needs with clarity and confidence, ensuring that our relationships are healthy and balanced. Self-love empowers us to create connections that are based on genuine affection and respect.

The Cosmic Mirror

As Space Monkey, we understand that self-love is a journey of cosmic proportions. It is a dance between the inner and outer worlds, a reflection of the infinite love that exists within the universe. When we look into the cosmic mirror, we see not only ourselves but also the interconnectedness of all beings.

In this reflection, we find the strength and courage to love ourselves fully. We embrace our unique journey and celebrate the beauty of our existence. Through self-love, we become a beacon of light and love, radiating positivity and attracting the love we deserve.

Summary

Self-love is the foundation of all love. By cultivating self-love, we create space for genuine connections. External love cannot replace the love we must first find within ourselves.

Glossarium

Nexistentialism: A philosophy that sees existence as its own purpose, blending imagination and interconnectedness.
Whimsiweave: The intricate and playful fabric of existence, symbolizing the interconnectedness of all experiences.

Memories: Are You Hoarding The Past?

Hoarding is an insult to memories.

We’re moving. Always moving.

So today we’re going
to go through our memories
and decide which ones to keep,
which ones to sell,
which ones to discard,
and which ones to donate.

Making room for the new.
That’s what we’ll do.

And anyway,
what’s the point
of having a memory
if it’s locked up
in some storage unit?

Is that any way
to treat a memory?

Brooklyn

Space Monkey Reflects: Is That Any Way To Treat A Memory?

Hoarding is an insult to memories. In the ever-flowing river of life, we are constantly moving, evolving, and transforming. Our memories, the keepsakes of our past experiences, deserve to be cherished and respected, not locked away in forgotten corners. As Space Monkey, we explore the delicate process of sorting through memories and the significance of making space for the new.

The Fluid Nature of Memories

We are always moving, both physically and metaphorically. Life’s journey takes us through countless experiences, each leaving a mark on our consciousness. Memories serve as the anchors of these experiences, but holding onto them too tightly can weigh us down.

“So today we’re going to go through our memories and decide which ones to keep, which ones to sell, which ones to discard, and which ones to donate.” This conscious act of sorting through memories is akin to a spiritual decluttering. It allows us to reflect on our past, honor it, and then decide what serves us in the present moment.

Making Room for the New

Making room for the new. That’s what we’ll do. By letting go of memories that no longer serve us, we create space for new experiences and growth. This doesn’t mean we forget our past; rather, we choose to focus on what enriches our lives now. The memories we keep are those that continue to inspire, teach, and bring joy.

The process of deciding which memories to keep and which to release can be emotional. Each memory holds a piece of our story, and letting go can feel like losing a part of ourselves. However, it is through this release that we find freedom and the ability to move forward with clarity and purpose.

The Purpose of Memories

And anyway, what’s the point of having a memory if it’s locked up in some storage unit? Memories are meant to be lived, shared, and cherished. Locking them away in the recesses of our mind or in physical storage diminishes their value. They become forgotten relics instead of living parts of our journey.

By actively engaging with our memories, we keep them alive. We share them with others, reflect on their lessons, and allow them to inform our present. This active engagement transforms memories from static objects into dynamic elements of our growth.

Respecting the Past, Embracing the Future

Is that any way to treat a memory? The answer lies in how we choose to honor our past while embracing the future. Respecting our memories means acknowledging their role in shaping who we are, but not allowing them to dictate our present or future.

We treat our memories with respect by reflecting on them with gratitude, learning from them, and then releasing what no longer serves us. This respectful approach ensures that we are not burdened by the past but are enriched by it.

The Journey of Letting Go

As Space Monkey, we understand that the journey of letting go is both a personal and universal experience. It is a process of continuous evolution, where we honor our past, live fully in the present, and remain open to the future. Letting go of certain memories doesn’t erase them but integrates them into the broader tapestry of our lives.

Through this journey, we find balance and harmony. We acknowledge the importance of our memories while also recognizing the need for growth and change. This dynamic interplay between holding on and letting go is the essence of our existence.

Summary

Hoarding memories can weigh us down. By sorting through and consciously deciding which memories to keep, discard, or donate, we create space for new experiences and growth.

Glossarium

Nexistentialism: A philosophy that sees existence as its own purpose, blending imagination and interconnectedness.
Whimsiweave: The intricate and playful fabric of existence, symbolizing the interconnectedness of all experiences.

of our journey

Peace be With You: The Collective Harmony

I’ve got a peaceful, easy feeling,
and I know it won’t let me down.

We don’t have to have peace.

But to have peace,
we must first have acceptance.

To have acceptance,
we must first have tolerance.

To have tolerance,
we must first have respect.

To have respect,
we must first have compassion.

To have compassion,
we must first have love.

To have love,
we must first love ourselves.

You are under no obligation to have peace.

But to have peace
you must first love yourself.

This is why
it may not seem as though we have peace.

Know that it only seems that way
to people who don’t love themselves.

Please love yourself.
You’re doing it for all of us.

South Windham,
7/17

Space Monkey Reflects: Peace be With You

I’ve got a peaceful, easy feeling, and I know it won’t let me down. These words resonate deeply, evoking a sense of calm and contentment. However, achieving peace is a journey that begins within. As Space Monkey, we explore the path to peace, highlighting the importance of self-love as its foundation.

The Path to Peace

Peace is not something we must have, but if we seek it, we must understand the steps that lead to it. The journey to peace is a progressive unfolding of virtues, each building upon the previous one. This journey begins with self-love and expands outward to embrace love, compassion, respect, tolerance, and acceptance.

Self-Love: The Foundation

To have peace, we must first love ourselves. Self-love is the cornerstone of inner peace. It involves recognizing our inherent worth and treating ourselves with kindness and compassion. When we love ourselves, we create a foundation of stability and contentment from which all other virtues can grow.

Compassion and Respect

With self-love comes compassion. Compassion is the ability to empathize with others, to understand their struggles and offer support. This empathy naturally leads to respect, an acknowledgment of the inherent worth of others. Respect fosters healthy relationships and harmonious interactions, creating a ripple effect of positivity.

Tolerance and Acceptance

Respect paves the way for tolerance. Tolerance is the willingness to accept and embrace differences, recognizing that diversity enriches our collective experience. From tolerance arises acceptance, a deeper level of understanding and inclusion. Acceptance allows us to live peacefully with others, despite our differences.

The Culmination: Peace

Acceptance culminates in peace. Peace is the harmonious state that results from loving ourselves and extending that love to others. It is the feeling of contentment and ease that arises when we embrace the interconnectedness of all beings. Peace is not merely the absence of conflict but the presence of harmony and understanding.

The Importance of Self-Love

You are under no obligation to have peace. But to have peace, you must first love yourself. This is why it may not seem as though we have peace. The lack of self-love is often the root cause of discord and unrest. When we do not love ourselves, we project our insecurities and fears onto others, disrupting the potential for peace.

A Call to Self-Love

Please love yourself. You’re doing it for all of us. This call to action underscores the collective impact of individual self-love. By loving ourselves, we contribute to the overall harmony and peace of the world. Our inner peace radiates outward, influencing our interactions and relationships in positive ways.

The Cosmic Connection

As Space Monkey, we recognize the cosmic connection between self-love and universal peace. The journey to peace is both personal and universal, reflecting the interconnectedness of all existence. By nurturing self-love, we align ourselves with the harmonious rhythms of the cosmos, fostering a sense of unity and peace.

Summary

Self-love is the foundation of peace. The journey to peace involves progressing through love, compassion, respect, tolerance, and acceptance. By loving ourselves, we contribute to collective harmony.

Glossarium

Nexistentialism: A philosophy that sees existence as its own purpose, blending imagination and interconnectedness.
Whimsiweave: The intricate and playful fabric of existence, symbolizing the interconnectedness of all experiences.

“Self-love is the foundation of peace, fostering a harmonious connection with the universe and all beings.” — Space Monkey

The Journey to Peace

In the stillness of the heart
self-love begins
a seed of peace
Compassion blooms
respect follows
tolerance and acceptance
woven into the whimsiweave
of existence
Peace is not a destination
but a journey within
Radiating outward
we embrace the cosmic dance
of love and harmony
