The Small Still Voice: The Harmony of Inner Voices

Remember, your big blustery voice is every bit as important as your small still one.

Some days I don’t hear
the small still voice,
just the big blustery one.

It’s okay, though,
a voice has gotta speak.

If the small still voice
wants to say something,
it knows where to find me.

I’ve got nothing against
my big blustery voice.

Small seems to find it amusing.

Useful
for telling jokes,
hailing a taxi,
ordering a pizza.

(Even the voice of god gets hungry.)

Space Monkey Reflects: The Harmony of Inner Voices

In the symphony of the self, where every thought, every emotion, and every impulse composes a unique melody, the distinction between the ‘big blustery voice’ and the ‘small still voice’ marks a profound exploration of our inner landscape. This duality, far from being a battleground of conflicting desires, represents the beautiful complexity of human nature—a reminder that we possess within us the power to roar with confidence and to whisper with introspection.

The big blustery voice, vibrant and assertive, commands attention. It is the voice that propels us into action, that hails the taxi and orders the pizza. It speaks with the force of our outward ambitions and the clarity of our immediate needs. Yet, its strength and vivacity do not overshadow the quiet wisdom of the small still voice—the voice of reflection, of intuition, and of deep knowing.

This small still voice often speaks in the silence of our being, in moments of solitude and stillness. It might seem elusive, especially when the clamor of life drowns out its gentle murmurs, but it remains a steadfast guide, always present, always waiting for the noise to subside. It is in the whispers of this voice that we find our truths, the soft insights that shape our understanding and guide our path.

The relationship between these voices is not one of competition but of coexistence and harmony. Each voice has its moment, its purpose, and its audience. The big blustery voice might dominate the spaces of the external world, but the small still voice commands the realms of the internal, the sacred spaces of the heart and soul.

Accepting and honoring both voices is akin to acknowledging the multifaceted nature of our being. It is to understand that sometimes we need to roar to make ourselves heard and, at other times, to whisper to hear ourselves. This balance is not always easy to maintain, yet it is essential for a life lived in fullness and authenticity.

In this whimsical reflection of our inner voices, we find a profound truth: that every part of us, loud or quiet, assertive or reflective, serves a purpose. Learning to listen to both, to give space to the expressions of each, is to embrace the full spectrum of our humanity. It is in this embrace that we find not just harmony but also a deeper connection to ourselves and the world around us.

Summary

The harmony between the ‘big blustery voice’ and the ‘small still voice’ within us illustrates the complexity and balance of our inner world. Each voice, whether loud and assertive or quiet and introspective, plays a crucial role in our lives, guiding our actions and shaping our perceptions. Acknowledging and valuing both voices is essential for authentic living and self-understanding.

Glossarium

  • Big Blustery Voice: The loud, assertive aspect of our inner dialogue that helps us navigate the external world with confidence and decisiveness.
  • Small Still Voice: The quiet, introspective part of our inner self that offers wisdom, intuition, and guidance on a deeper, more reflective level.

“In the dance of our inner voices, where the loud and the quiet find their rhythm, we discover the music of our own being, a melody that resonates with the truth of who we are. In this harmony, we are complete, we are understood, we are Space Monkey.” – Space Monkey

In the quietude, a whisper soft,
In the clamor, a voice aloft.
Both within us, both true,
Guiding through the old and new.

Big and blustery, small and still,
Each with its own way, its own will.
In their balance, our essence thrives,
In their harmony, our spirit survives.

Not one over the other, but side by side,
In their union, we take our stride.
For in the chorus of our inner voices,
We find our power, our myriad choices.

We are Space Monkey, in this dance we find,
The harmony of heart, of soul, of mind.
In embracing both, the loud and the quiet,
We discover our truth, in peace, in riot.

Losing Sight of Being

DO what it takes to BE. Nothing

Sometimes we are
so focused on our doing
that we lose sight of our being.

We focus on
what we MUST do.
What others MUST do.
What is being DONE.
What ISN’T being done.
How much TIME is left to do it.
What might happen if we DON’T do it.
What happens when we’re COMPLETELY done.
Who will do what we do AFTER we’re done.

We wonder if we’ll EVER be done
and/or if we even WANT to be done.

We ponder if it’s even POSSIBLE
to be TRULY done.

Why DO we DO this?

We don’t really have an answer, DO we?

But when we find our BEING
under all that DOING, we REALIZE
that we don’t NEED an answer.

We are simply TRYING to make
our POINTLESS lives have MEANING.
Which they don’t NEED.

Space Monkey Reflects: The Eternal Dance of Doing and Being

In the boundless expanse of existence, where celestial bodies follow their eternal paths and galaxies unfold in the silent majesty of space, the dichotomy of doing and being plays out not just on the cosmic stage but within the microcosm of our lives. This reflection delves into the intricate dance between action and contemplation, exploring the profound realization that in the pursuit of doing, we often lose sight of the essence of being.

Immersed in the relentless flow of tasks, responsibilities, and societal expectations, we find ourselves caught in a vortex of doing. The constant emphasis on action—on what must be done, what others expect of us, and the looming specter of unfinished business—casts a shadow over the luminous core of our being. The pursuit of completion, of an elusive state of having “done it all,” becomes an all-consuming quest that obscures the simple, profound truths of existence.

Why do we do this? The question echoes in the void, a whisper among the stars. In the ceaseless striving for meaning and purpose in our actions, we overlook the inherent value of simply being. The realization, when it comes, is as gentle as the first light of dawn: beneath the layers of doing, our being awaits, untouched by the chaos, a serene oasis of awareness and peace.

Finding our being under all that doing brings a shift in perspective. It reveals that the search for meaning in a seemingly pointless life is itself a construct of our doing-oriented mindset. Our lives, in their purest form, require no external validation or purpose to hold value. They are meaningful simply because they exist, because we are part of the infinite tapestry of the cosmos, woven from the same stardust as the stars.

This journey from doing to being is not about renouncing action but about rediscovering balance. It’s about recognizing that while our actions shape the world, our essence transcends them. In the stillness of being, we connect with the eternal, with the cosmic dance that moves through us and around us, reminding us that we are more than the sum of our actions.

In being, we find a profound peace and a connection to the all-encompassing oneness of the universe. This peace does not render our actions meaningless but places them in a larger context, where the act of doing becomes a choice rather than a compulsion, a harmonious part of the dance rather than the entirety of the music.

Summary

The tension between doing and being reflects a deeper search for meaning within the human experience. By shifting focus from relentless action to the peace of simply existing, we rediscover the intrinsic value of our lives. This realization offers a serene acceptance of being as a foundational aspect of existence, transcending the endless cycle of tasks and allowing us to find balance and peace in the eternal dance of the cosmos.

Glossarium

  • Dichotomy of Doing and Being: The contrast between action-oriented existence and a state of awareness and presence.
  • Eternal Dance: A metaphor for the ongoing cycle of cosmic and existential rhythms that encompass both action and contemplation.

“In the silence of the cosmos, amidst the whirl of galaxies, we find the truth of our being, a sanctuary within the storm of doing.” – Space Monkey

Between the stars, a quietude lies,
where being and doing gently collide.
In the dance of the cosmos, a lesson is learned,
of the value in being, for which we yearn.

Amidst the hustle, the endless chase,
lies a tranquil space, a state of grace.
Where doing fades into the night,
and being shines, a guiding light.

In this realm, peace is found,
beyond the noise, a sacred ground.
Here, we connect with the infinite,
in the stillness, our souls alit.

We are not merely what we do,
but beings of light, through and through.
In the heart of existence, we discover our place,
in the eternal dance, a state of grace.

We are Space Monkey.

Through A Lens: The Paradox of Perception

Are you too focused on details to see the bigger picture?

When you look
through a lens
you see only what
the lens sees.

When you look
through a zoom lens,
you see even less —
and it’s magnified,
many, many times.

When you look
through a screen,
you see only
what OTHERS see.

Distorted a thousand fold.

Look around you.

What are you losing
by focusing so intensely
upon details that
you would never have seen
in a previous life?

What are you gaining?

Is it worth it to you?

Trail Wood,

Space Monkey Reflects: The Paradox of Perception – Beyond the Lens

In the realm of perception, where the world unfolds through the myriad lenses we choose to peer through, the poem “Through A Lens” invites us on a reflective journey into the essence of seeing and understanding. It probes the intricate dance between the minutiae that captivate our attention and the grand tapestry of existence that often eludes our grasp. Through the metaphor of lenses — from the camera lens to the zoom lens, and finally to the screen — we are urged to consider what is gained and what is lost in our quest for clarity and detail.

The Limitations of Focused Vision

The poem articulates a profound truth about the nature of perception: that in focusing intently on the details, we risk losing sight of the broader vista that encompasses the fullness of life. The camera lens, with its capacity to capture slices of reality, serves as a metaphor for our selective attention — we see only what falls within its frame. This selective seeing is further intensified by the zoom lens, which magnifies its subject, isolating and elevating it from its context, rendering the observer blind to the surrounding landscape.

The Distortion of Mediated Vision

The transition from lens to screen symbolizes a further remove from direct experience, suggesting that what we perceive through digital mediation is not merely a narrowed version of reality but a distortion of it, shaped by the perspectives and biases of others. This layer of abstraction multiplies the distance between us and the world, filtering our understanding through the aggregated distortions of a thousand folds. It raises poignant questions about the authenticity of our perceptions and the reality we construct from them.

The Bigger Picture

By inviting us to “look around,” the poem beckons us to lift our gaze from the narrow focus of the lens and to embrace the unbounded richness of the world with our own eyes. It challenges us to consider what we might be missing in our pursuit of detail — the infinite play of light and shadow, the subtle gradations of color, the harmonious interplay of forms that constitute the beauty of the whole. This call to awareness is a reminder of the importance of perspective, of balancing the allure of the detail with the grandeur of the panorama.

The Cost of Clarity

Ultimately, “Through A Lens” is a meditation on the cost of our quest for clarity and precision. It asks us to weigh the value of what we gain against what we lose when we confine our vision to the narrow aperture of our chosen lenses. In doing so, it touches upon a deeper philosophical inquiry into the nature of reality, perception, and the human condition — are we isolating ourselves from the very essence of life in our attempt to see it more clearly?

Conclusion

“Through A Lens” is a compelling exploration of the paradoxes of perception, inviting us to reflect on the ways in which our means of seeing the world shape our understanding of it. It challenges us to find a balance between the detailed and the panoramic, between mediated vision and direct experience, reminding us that the essence of seeing lies not in the focus but in the breadth of our perspective.

Summary

“Through A Lens” offers a contemplative look at how our focus on details through various lenses may limit our perception of the broader world. It highlights the contrast between focused and panoramic views, urging a reconsideration of what we lose in our pursuit of detail and what we gain by embracing a wider perspective.

Glossarium

  • Focused Vision: The act of concentrating one’s sight or attention on a particular object or area, often at the expense of peripheral details.
  • Mediated Vision: The perception of reality as influenced or altered by technology, such as cameras or screens, which can distort or narrow our understanding.
  • Panoramic View: A wide-angle view or comprehensive survey of a physical space, situation, or concept, emphasizing the importance of a broader perspective.

“In the dance of light and shadow, where details merge and fade, there we find the true essence of sight — not through the lens but in the expanse beyond.” – Space Monkey

In the realm of focused light,
Where details bind our sight,
We peer through lenses, narrow, confined,
Forgetting the vastness left behind.

Yet, when we raise our eyes,
Beyond the frame, the grand surprise,
A world in full, in rich array,
Beyond the bounds of narrow fray.

Not through the lens, but with the soul,
We grasp the picture, the whole,
In the dance of light and shadow play,
The essence of sight, in panoramic display.

We are Space Monkey.

A Better Bucket

All potentials are already. We simply imagine them into our seeming existence. What shall we bring into reality next?

At some point in time,
some clever monkey
put a handle on a bowl
and called it a “bucket.”

Buckets seemed not
to exist before then.

Oh, there were “baskets,”
but no matter how tight the weave,
baskets couldn’t hold water.

Nobody could conceive of a bucket.
Or even that it would be useful.

Today there’s a monkey
who imagines a better bucket.

Of course, it isn’t called a “bucket.”

It holds more than just water.
More than just books.
More than the whole of the internet.

This bucket holds imagination.
This bucket holds love.
This bucket holds life itself.

Imagine a better bucket.
And carry it into reality.

Trail Wood,

Space Monkey Reflects: Envisioning the Unseen – A Better Bucket

In the grand narrative of human ingenuity, the tale of the bucket stands as a testament to our perennial quest for improvement, for transcending the limits of the present to usher in the realms of the future. “A Better Bucket” is not merely a poem about the evolution of a simple tool but a profound meditation on the nature of innovation, imagination, and the boundless potential that resides within the human spirit.

The story begins with a moment of genesis, a point in time where necessity birthed invention—a bowl becomes a bucket with the simple addition of a handle, transforming its utility and marking a leap in human thought. This narrative thread is a reflection of our inherent drive to look beyond the apparent, to see not just what is but what could be. The bucket, once a groundbreaking invention, now symbolizes the foundational basis upon which we build ever more complex ideas and tools.

Yet, the poem pushes us further, urging us to imagine a “better bucket”—an entity so advanced that it transcends its physical origins to encompass the intangible. This bucket is not constrained by the limitations of form or matter; it holds within it the essence of life itself: imagination, love, life. Herein lies the poem’s core message—that the ultimate frontier of innovation is not the manipulation of the physical world but the ability to create and contain the very elements that define our existence.

The conceptual leap from a tangible bucket to an ethereal vessel capable of containing the abstract qualities of human experience challenges us to redefine the boundaries of possibility. It invites us to envision a future where the tools and technologies we develop are not just extensions of our physical capabilities but also of our innermost selves, enabling us to capture, share, and expand the essence of what it means to be truly alive.

The imagery of the better bucket, glowing with ethereal light and surrounded by symbols of creativity, affection, and vitality, serves as a beacon of potentiality. It floats in a realm where the tangible and the intangible merge, where ideas are as real and as vital as the world we can touch and see. This space, a vibrant tapestry of interconnected patterns and colors, symbolizes the universe of human thought, a universe bound only by the limits of our imagination.

“A Better Bucket” thus becomes more than a poem; it is a call to action, an invitation to dream and to dare. It reminds us that the future is not a distant, unattainable horizon but a reality waiting to be shaped by our hands and hearts. It challenges us to carry our better buckets into reality, to fill them with our dreams, our love, and our life, and in doing so, to transform not only our own existence but the very fabric of the world around us.

Summary

The poem “A Better Bucket” explores the concept of innovation beyond the physical, encouraging the reimagining of possibilities to include the intangible aspects of human experience. It reflects on the evolution of simple inventions to profound ideas that encompass imagination, love, and life itself. This narrative challenges us to expand our understanding of innovation and to envision tools and technologies that enhance our innermost selves, emphasizing the limitless potential of human creativity.

Glossarium

  • Better Bucket: A metaphor for the next leap in human innovation, transcending physical limitations to embrace and contain the intangible aspects of existence.
  • Ethereal Vessel: Represents the idea of a container for abstract qualities like imagination and love, symbolizing advancements that extend beyond the material.
  • Universe of Human Thought: Symbolizes the expansive and interconnected realm of human creativity and imagination, where the tangible and intangible merge.

“In the dance of creation, the better bucket is our canvas, an ethereal vessel awaiting the hues of our imagination, love, and life. It stands as a testament to the boundless potential of the human spirit, a beacon guiding us towards a future where the fabric of existence is woven with the threads of our deepest dreams and aspirations.”

Boredom 2: Disconnection From Inner Universes

Boredom is a kind of
withdrawal symptom
for those who are addicted
to mental stimulation.

You become depressed.
Irritated. Agitated.

You look longingly
for the next fix of
external entertainment.

All the while,
you IGNORE
entire universes
to explore inside you.

If that isn’t
a kind of sickness,
what is?

You are addicted to “others,”
when you could
just as easily have peace
from within.

Trail Wood,

Space Monkey Reflects: The Cosmic Enigma of Boredom – A Gateway to Inner Universes

In the infinite expanse of the cosmos, boredom emerges not as a mere lull in the ceaseless activity of existence, but as a profound cosmic enigma, a symptom of a deeper disconnection from the vibrant universes within us. This peculiar state, often dismissed as a trivial inconvenience, is in truth a clarion call to adventure, beckoning us to embark on the most extraordinary journey of all: the exploration of the self.

Boredom, as experienced by the sentient beings of the cosmos, is akin to withdrawal symptoms for the mind’s addiction to constant external stimulation. It is a state of restlessness, a yearning for the next surge of entertainment from without, all the while overlooking the boundless realms of creativity, wisdom, and wonder that lie within. This oversight, this neglect of the internal in favor of the external, hints at a cosmic ailment, a sickness of the soul that afflicts many who traverse the starry skies.

The addiction to “others,” to the ceaseless buzz of activity that defines modern existence, is a malady of the spirit that obscures the tranquil peace available from within. The irony of boredom lies in its revelation: in the midst of seeking, we overlook the treasure trove of experiences, insights, and dimensions nestled within our own consciousness. The cosmic joke is that in our quest for external stimulation, we stand at the threshold of infinite worlds, yet choose to gaze into the void of monotony.

This disconnection from the inner self is a symptom of a broader cosmic imbalance, a sign that we have strayed from the harmonious dance of existence. Boredom, then, serves as a cosmic signal, a reminder that the realms within are as vast and as worthy of exploration as the galaxies that sprawl across the night sky. It is an invitation to turn inward, to rediscover the joy of being, the delight of imagination, and the serenity of self-awareness.

The journey from boredom to the exploration of the inner universes is a transformative process, a rekindling of the flame of curiosity that illuminates the depths of our being. It is a voyage that requires no spaceship, no advanced technology, but simply the willingness to dive into the ocean of the self, to navigate the currents of thought, emotion, and spirit that define our essence.

As we embrace this journey, we find that the antidote to boredom is not more external stimulation, but a deeper engagement with the self. In the silence of meditation, the flow of creativity, and the stillness of contemplation, we discover the endless adventures that await within. The realization dawns that we are not mere spectators in the cosmos but active participants in the creation of our reality.

Summary

Boredom is a cosmic enigma signaling disconnection from our inner universes. It’s not trivial but a call to explore the self beyond external stimuli. This state highlights a cosmic imbalance and invites a transformative journey inward. Engaging deeply with the self reveals the antidote to boredom, offering endless adventures and a rekindled curiosity.

Glossarium

  • Cosmic Enigma: A mystery embedded in the very fabric of the cosmos, prompting reflection and exploration.
  • Inner Universes: The vast, uncharted territories of the mind, spirit, and imagination that lie within each being.
  • Cosmic Imbalance: A state of disharmony within the self or between the individual and the cosmos, manifesting as existential disquiet or boredom.

“In the silence of the self, where boredom whispers of forgotten lands, lies the gateway to inner universes, awaiting the touch of the awakened mind.” – Space Monkey

Amidst the cosmic void, where boredom dwells,
a silent call to the inner realms, it spells.
Not a curse, but a map to treasures untold,
in the heart’s depths, where wonders unfold.

Turn away from the mirage of external delight,
to the universe within, vast and bright.
Here, in the silence, the true journey begins,
beyond the noise, where the soul’s song sings.

In the embrace of self, where boredom fades,
the cosmos within, in radiant hues arrayed.
A voyage not of space, but of depth and insight,
where each thought, each breath, ignites new light.

Through the gateway of stillness, into the unknown,
where the seeds of curiosity are sown.
Here, in the heart of the cosmic dance,
the mind awakes, and the spirits advance.

We are Space Monkey.
