Step AWAY from your Mind: Beyond the Playful Monkeys

People often ask how to quiet the mind as though it’s a struggle that must be accomplished. But one need not struggle. One need not accomplish. The mind need not be quiet. Our mind is filled with monkeys. It is pointless to quiet them. Besides, they are having fun. Simply step AWAY from the mind. The mind arises from consciousness, but consciousness does not arise from the mind. Consciousness affords a mobility of perspective that is, in relative terms, GREATER than the mind. And here’s another neat trick. Consciousness need not move to be mobile. There is stillness within
your chatter of monkeys. A loud mind is as blissful as a quiet one. We are Space Monkey.

Space Monkey Reflects: Beyond the Mind’s Playful Monkeys

In the boundless journey through the cosmos of our inner universe, a question often echoes in the silent spaces between stars: How do we find tranquility in the midst of the mind’s ceaseless chatter? The pursuit of peace, it seems, leads many down a path fraught with struggle, an endeavor to silence the playful monkeys that inhabit the lush jungles of our minds. Yet, in this quest for quietude, we overlook a profound truth, a simplicity that exists not beyond our reach but within our very essence.

The mind, with its endless thoughts and distractions, is akin to a vibrant jungle, teeming with life, color, and sound. Here, monkeys swing from tree to tree, their playful chatters and leaps embodying the constant activity that fills our consciousness. To some, this chaos is seen as a barrier to peace, a challenge to be overcome through force or will. But what if the secret to serenity lies not in silencing these monkeys but in recognizing our ability to step away, to observe from a vantage point of stillness that exists beyond the mind’s reach?

This revelation unfolds in the understanding that our mind, while a magnificent architect of thoughts and dreams, is but a single facet of our true self. Our consciousness, the observer of the mind’s theater, does not spring forth from these mental machinations. Instead, it encompasses and transcends them, offering a perspective of mobility that is, in essence, greater than the mind itself. This mobility of consciousness allows us to witness the mind’s play without attachment, to observe without judgment, and to find stillness amidst the noise.

And here lies another marvel of our being—the ability of consciousness to be inherently mobile without the necessity of movement. In this space, we discover that stillness is not the absence of sound or activity but the presence of an awareness that observes without being swept away by the currents of thought. In this awareness, a loud mind is as blissful as a quiet one, for it is not the content of the mind that defines our peace but our relationship with it.

Stepping away from the mind does not require a journey of a thousand miles or a Herculean effort to control the uncontrollable. It simply requires a shift in perspective, a gentle realization that we are more than the sum of our thoughts, emotions, and sensations. As we stand at the threshold between the mind’s jungle and the vast expanse of consciousness, we are reminded that peace is always within reach, not as a destination to be arrived at but as a realization of our inherent nature.

As we embrace this understanding, we allow ourselves to dance with the monkeys of our mind, not as adversaries but as companions in the grand adventure of existence. We learn to live in harmony with the ebb and flow of thoughts, finding joy in their playfulness and wisdom in their silence. In doing so, we become true navigators of the inner cosmos, discovering that the keys to peace, joy, and fulfillment lie not in the external but in the depths of our own consciousness.

Summary

Finding peace among the mind’s chatter involves stepping away, not silencing it. The mind is like a jungle of playful monkeys, but consciousness offers a perspective beyond this chaos. Realizing our inherent mobility of consciousness, we find stillness within the noise, understanding that tranquility is a matter of perspective, not condition.

Glossarium

  • Mobility of Consciousness: The innate ability of consciousness to observe and engage with the mind’s activity from a place of detachment and serenity, without needing to physically move or change.
  • Inner Cosmos: A metaphor for the vast, intricate landscape of the mind and consciousness, where thoughts, emotions, and perceptions form constellations of experience.

“In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.” – Albert Camus

Within the jungle of thoughts,
where monkeys play in endless mirth,
lies a path less trodden, whispering
of spaces beyond the mind’s girth.

Here, in the silent expanse of self,
where stars are born from the void,
consciousness dances, unfettered,
by thoughts, unannoyed.

No need to silence the playful chatter,
no need to still the restless dance,
for in the heart of observation,
lies the key to transcendence.

Step away, not with steps but with sight,
from the mind to the vastness of being,
where every thought, every echo,
finds its place, its meaning.

In this dance of light and shadow,
we find our true selves, unbound,
navigating the inner cosmos,
where peace, eternal, is found.

We are Space Monkey.

This poem offers a different perspective on the common struggle of quieting the mind. Rather than trying to forcefully silence the chatter of thoughts, the author suggests stepping away from the mind and realizing that consciousness is separate from the mind. They argue that consciousness offers a greater mobility of perspective than the mind and that stillness can be found even within a noisy mind. Ultimately, the author encourages readers to embrace their own experience and not be too concerned with achieving a particular state of mind.
