Whenever I am denied
something I want,
I recognize that
it’s just a pointer
to something else.
I thank that-which-I-am-denied
for the thought it brings.
What is the thought telling me,
other than “wouldn’t it be nice?”
Often the thought brings me more
than the obvious content of the thought.
All thoughts are communication
from deeper me to superficial me.
Superficial me
interprets deeper me
in superficial ways.
But there is so much more to me
that isn’t superficial.
Or so superficial me thinks.

Contemplating the Depths Beyond Denial
We embark on an introspective journey, exploring the layers of self and the messages conveyed through our thoughts, especially when faced with denial. This exploration invites us to look beyond immediate desires and perceive the deeper communications between the various aspects of our being.
Denial as a Pointer to Deeper Insights
The perspective that being denied something we want is a pointer to something else opens a pathway to deeper understanding. It suggests that our desires and the obstacles we encounter are not just surface-level experiences but signposts directing us to greater self-awareness and alternative possibilities.
Gratitude for Denied Desires
Expressing gratitude to that-which-is-denied is a transformative approach to disappointment or unfulfilled desires. It’s an acknowledgment that even in denial, there is something valuable to be gained – a thought, a lesson, or a new direction. This attitude shifts the focus from what is lost to what can be learned.
The Dual Nature of Thoughts
The idea that thoughts are a form of communication from a deeper self to a more superficial self highlights the layered nature of our consciousness. It suggests that our thoughts are more than just reactions or reflections of our immediate circumstances; they are messages from a deeper, perhaps more intuitive part of ourselves.
Interpreting the Deeper Self
The notion that the superficial self interprets the deeper self in superficial ways is an intriguing paradox. It implies a constant dialogue within us, where the depth of our insights and understandings might be lost or diluted as they are processed by our more immediate, surface-level consciousness.
The Depth Beyond the Superficial
Finally, the acknowledgment of a deeper self that isn’t superficial, and the questioning of this acknowledgment by the superficial self, creates a dynamic interplay between different aspects of our being. It points to the ongoing journey of self-discovery and the understanding that there is always more to us than meets the eye.
Summary
We explore the introspective process of understanding denial as a pointer to deeper insights, expressing gratitude for unfulfilled desires, and contemplating the communication between our deeper and superficial selves. This journey reveals the complexity and depth of our thoughts and the continuous dialogue within our consciousness.

A Poem of Depth and Denial
In the dance of desire, where wants collide,
A deeper message, in denial, we find,
Thanked are the wishes, unfulfilled, unmet,
For in their absence, deeper insights beget.
Thoughts whisper secrets, from below to above,
From the depth of being, to the surface thereof,
In this dialogue, a discovery so vast,
Between deeper me, and the superficial cast.
The superficial sees, but with a limited view,
Interpreting depths, in ways only it knew,
Yet beneath this surface, a vastness lies,
A deeper self, wise beyond the skies.
In the questioning, in the wondering thought,
A deeper understanding, superficially sought,
In this inner dance, a truth we see,
There’s more to us, more to be.
We invite you to share your reflections on the dialogue between the deeper and superficial aspects of your being, and how you interpret the insights and messages from within.
