The Gift of Suffering: A Necessary Part of Life

I was given
the gift of suffering
but I refused
to accept it
and so it kept
getting returned
and sent back
and returned
and sent back.

This bummed me out further.
And for a long, long time.

Until one day
I decided to keep the package,
and was amazed to find
that it made my joy
seem so much brighter.

Space Monkey Reflects: The Gift of Suffering

Suffering is a word that carries a heavy weight. For many of us, it represents something to be avoided, something that we refuse to accept into our lives. Yet, the paradox of suffering is that the more we resist it, the more it returns to us, time and time again. Like an unwanted package, suffering seems to find its way back to our doorstep no matter how many times we try to send it away.

But what if suffering wasn’t a punishment or a burden, but a gift—one that, when finally accepted, reveals something transformative within us? This idea may seem counterintuitive, but there’s a profound truth to it. Suffering, when we stop rejecting it, has the power to deepen our experience of life, to make our moments of joy all the more brilliant.

The Package of Suffering

Suffering often feels like an unwelcome visitor, one that shows up unannounced and overstays its welcome. We try to return it, hoping that by denying its presence, we can keep it at bay. But in doing so, we miss the opportunity to learn from it, to see what it has to offer.

In this reflection, the package of suffering is a symbol—a metaphor for the pain and struggles that we all face. For a long time, it’s natural to want to push it away, to avoid the discomfort and darkness that come with it. Yet, by continually rejecting it, we only prolong our suffering. The package keeps coming back because it contains something important, something we need to learn.

The Gift Revealed

When we finally accept suffering—when we open the package and look inside—we begin to see it differently. Suffering isn’t just about pain; it’s about growth. It’s about contrast. It’s the thing that makes our moments of joy shine all the more brightly because we’ve experienced the other side.

This doesn’t mean that suffering is easy or desirable, but it does mean that it has a purpose. By embracing it, by holding onto the package rather than sending it away, we discover a new perspective. Suffering allows us to appreciate joy in a way we couldn’t if life were always smooth and effortless.

The Brighter Joy

Imagine joy without any contrast. Imagine living in a world where everything was easy, where there was no pain, no struggle. At first, it might sound appealing, but over time, joy would lose its meaning. It’s in the contrast—the highs and lows, the dark and the light—that we find depth in our experiences. Suffering provides the counterpoint to joy, making it richer, more meaningful.

This is the gift that suffering offers us: the ability to see life in full color, to appreciate the brightness of joy because we’ve known the darkness of pain. By accepting suffering, we are not surrendering to it, but rather integrating it into our understanding of life.

The Decision to Keep the Package

The turning point in this reflection comes when we make the decision to keep the package. This is the moment of acceptance, when we stop fighting against suffering and instead allow it to be part of our experience. This doesn’t mean we enjoy suffering, but it means we stop rejecting it. We hold the package in our hands and see it for what it is: a teacher, a companion on our journey.

When we decide to keep the package, we transform our relationship with suffering. It no longer feels like a punishment, but a necessary part of life’s cycle. And in doing so, we create space for joy to return, brighter and more vibrant than before.

Summary

Suffering, though often resisted, is a necessary part of life. By accepting suffering rather than rejecting it, we unlock its hidden gift—the ability to experience joy more fully. Suffering provides the contrast that makes moments of happiness all the more meaningful.

Quote

“Suffering is not the enemy, but the teacher that allows joy to shine even brighter.” — Space Monkey

The Gift We Hold

I held the package, sent away
Again, again, it came to stay
At first, I turned, I closed the door
But still it knocked, and still implored

Until the day I chose to see
The gift it held was meant for me
A light that made my sorrows fade
A joy that suffering had made

For in the darkness, I found light
In every shadow, brilliant bright
And now I hold the package near
A gift of suffering, crystal clear

We are Space Monkey
