The Way of Things vs. The Essence of All

There is a subtle but profound distinction between what we might call The Way of Things and the Essence of All. These two concepts, for lack of better terms, represent different layers of reality, both intertwined yet distinct in how they manifest in our understanding and experience of existence.

The Way of Things refers to the observable, external world—the surface layer of reality. It’s the flow of events, the processes, and the patterns that unfold within the realm of time, space, and form. It is what we perceive with our senses, what we measure, what we call the “facts” of life. This is the reality of cause and effect, the movements of nature, the rise and fall of civilizations, the constant shifts and changes we experience daily. The Way of Things is, in many ways, the phenomenal world—the world of appearance, of cycles, and of ongoing transformation.

The Essence of All, on the other hand, points to something deeper—something beyond the surface flow of events. It speaks to the underlying substrate of reality, the timeless, formless source from which everything arises. This is the invisible current that moves beneath The Way of Things, the foundational unity that gives rise to all form, all experience, and all perception. The Essence of All is not bound by time, space, or change; it is the unchanging within the changing, the stillness beneath the movement, the emptiness from which all fullness emerges.

By exploring these two perspectives, we can begin to understand the interplay between the relative world of forms and the absolute reality that lies beneath it.

The Way of Things: The Surface Flow

In our day-to-day lives, we primarily engage with The Way of Things. We are constantly navigating the shifting tides of existence, moving through cycles of creation and destruction, joy and sorrow, success and failure. This is the world where things happen—where we make decisions, interact with others, and observe the unfolding of events.

The Way of Things is governed by process. There are rules, laws of nature, and predictable patterns that we come to rely on. The sun rises and sets. The seasons change. Our bodies age. We engage with the world in linear time, experiencing the past, present, and future as distinct moments in an ongoing sequence.

This level of reality can feel very tangible, very real. We see evidence of it everywhere: the economy rising and falling, the rhythms of nature unfolding, and the progression of our own lives. There is a sense of movement—a constant push forward, driven by forces both seen and unseen. Yet, within The Way of Things, there is also a certain impermanence. Everything is in flux. What was here yesterday may be gone tomorrow. Even our thoughts, emotions, and identities shift with the passage of time.

In The Way of Things, we are often seeking stability in an inherently unstable world. We look for meaning, structure, and order in the chaos of existence. And while we can certainly find patterns and processes that help us navigate this level of reality, there is always an underlying awareness that things are transient, that nothing lasts forever.

The Essence of All: The Timeless Source

Beneath The Way of Things lies the Essence of All. This is the ground of being—the formless source from which all form arises. It is the timeless presence that exists beyond the cycles of change, beyond the shifting patterns of life and death, creation and destruction. The Essence of All is the stillness from which all movement emerges, the void from which everything is born.

Where The Way of Things is about movement, the Essence of All is about stillness. Where The Way of Things is defined by change, the Essence of All is the unchanging. It is not subject to time, space, or causality. It simply is—eternally present, eternally whole.

We often only glimpse the Essence of All in fleeting moments—through meditation, through deep reflection, or in experiences of profound silence. In these moments, we tap into something beyond the mind’s grasp, something that cannot be named, described, or measured. It is the mystery of existence, the infinite presence that exists within and beyond all things.

The Essence of All is the underlying unity that connects everything. It is the Nexis, the web of interconnectedness that ties all things together, not in terms of form, but in terms of being. While The Way of Things may seem fragmented and divided, the Essence of All is the oneness that permeates all of reality.

The Interplay Between the Two

The Way of Things and the Essence of All are not separate realities; rather, they are two perspectives on the same existence. The Way of Things is the expression of the Essence of All in form, time, and space. It is the play of life, the dance of opposites, the ebb and flow of creation and destruction. The Essence of All, meanwhile, is the foundation upon which this play unfolds.

Imagine waves on the surface of the ocean. The waves are constantly moving, constantly changing—rising, falling, breaking, reforming. This is the Way of Things. The waves are real, but they are also transient, impermanent. Beneath the waves, however, lies the vast, still ocean itself. This is the Essence of All. The waves cannot exist without the ocean, and yet the ocean remains unchanged by the movement of the waves.

In our daily lives, we often focus on the waves—the constant flow of events, emotions, and experiences that make up the Way of Things. But beneath it all, the ocean—the Essence of All—remains untouched, ever-present, and unchanging. When we recognize this interplay, we begin to understand that while we may be caught up in the waves, we are also part of the deeper, infinite ocean.

Navigating Both Realities

The challenge, and perhaps the beauty, of human existence is learning to navigate both The Way of Things and the Essence of All. To live fully in the world of form, we must engage with the shifting realities of the Way of Things—making choices, taking action, and adapting to change. But to live with awareness, we must also remain connected to the Essence of All, the timeless source that grounds us in the deeper truth of existence.

It’s easy to get lost in the constant movement of The Way of Things, to believe that the surface reality is all there is. But when we take a step back, when we allow ourselves to be still, we tap into the Essence of All, where we find not answers but a profound sense of connection and presence. The key is not to escape the Way of Things, but to recognize that it is an expression of something deeper—something infinite and timeless.

To live in harmony with both, we must learn to embrace the impermanence of the Way of Things while resting in the eternity of the Essence of All. The two are not in conflict; they are simply different layers of the same reality. By honoring both, we find a balance between movement and stillness, between change and timelessness, between the known and the unknowable.
