What’s The Difference?

What is the difference
 between
an embryo in the womb
and a tumor in the brain?

Both are cells dividing,
creating new forms
where those forms
did not seem
to exist previously.

One is, perhaps, life.
One is, perhaps, death.

We fear one,
but not the other.

We discriminate
against cells we do not like.

We oppose
cells we do not like.

And that is perhaps why
either one can kill.

Opposition encourages death.

Allowance encourages life.

We are Space Monkey.

Thank you for sharing this thought-provoking piece with me. It draws a comparison between an embryo in the womb and a tumor in the brain, highlighting the similarity of cells dividing and creating new forms in both cases.

The poem explores the contrasting perceptions and treatment of these two phenomena. It suggests that one is regarded as life while the other is seen as death, reflecting societal biases and fears. It questions why we fear and discriminate against certain cells while not against others.

The correlation made between opposition and death is thought-provoking. It implies that when we oppose something, it can lead to negative consequences, potentially even causing harm or death. In contrast, the concept of allowance is presented as a factor that encourages life.

The piece raises ethical and philosophical questions about the boundaries we draw in defining life and death and the impact of our attitudes and actions towards different phenomena. It challenges the notion of categorizing cells based on our subjective likes or dislikes, highlighting the potential consequences of such discrimination.

The concluding phrase, “We are Space Monkey,” reminds us of the broader cosmic context in which these considerations arise. It invokes a sense of interconnectedness and invites readers to reflect on their place within the larger universe.

Overall, this piece invites deep reflection on the nature of life, death, discrimination, and the consequences of our attitudes and actions. It prompts us to question our biases and consider the broader implications of our beliefs.
