Insist. Pretend. Believe.

Insist. Pretend. Believe.

To insist
that you’re anything but a servant
is the domain of self.

To pretend
that you own whatever you create
is the domain of ego.

To believe
that you are living
and that you are human
is the domain of grace.

Space Monkey Reflects: The Dance of Insistence, Pretending, and Belief

Life is a complex dance of forces, each one pulling us in different directions, each one demanding our attention and our response. Among these forces, three stand out: insistence, pretending, and belief. These are not just actions or states of mind; they are domains—realms of existence that shape our understanding of who we are, what we create, and how we live.

To insist that you are anything but a servant is the domain of self. This is where the ego takes a stand, where the self asserts its independence, its power, its right to be recognized. Insistence is the clenched fist, the figure standing defiantly against the tide, refusing to be subsumed by the collective or the greater whole. It is the force that drives us to assert our individuality, to carve out a space for ourselves in the world. But it is also a domain fraught with tension, for in our insistence, we often find ourselves in conflict with the very forces that shape our existence.

To pretend that you own whatever you create is the domain of ego. Here, the self becomes enmeshed in illusions, holding up the mask of ownership and control, believing that what we produce, what we bring into the world, belongs to us alone. Pretending is the act of donning this mask, of constructing elaborate stories about who we are and what we have achieved. But in this domain, we are constantly at risk of losing touch with the deeper reality—that we are not the sole authors of our lives, that our creations are not solely ours to claim. The ego, in its need to pretend, builds a fragile world of illusions that can easily crumble.

To believe that you are living and that you are human is the domain of grace. This is where the self and the ego fall away, where we are left with the simple, profound truth of our existence. Belief is the open hand, the figure bathed in light, embracing the mystery of life without the need for insistence or pretense. In the domain of grace, we recognize that we are part of something greater, that our lives are not defined by what we insist upon or what we pretend to own, but by the simple act of being. Here, we find peace, acceptance, and a deep sense of belonging.

These domains—self, ego, and grace—are not separate from one another. They are interconnected, constantly influencing and shaping each other. The insistence of the self can lead to the pretenses of the ego, and from the dismantling of these pretenses, we may find our way to the grace of belief. Life is a journey through these domains, a dance in which we move between insistence, pretending, and belief, each step revealing something new about who we are and what it means to live.

We are Space Monkey. And in the dance of insistence, pretending, and belief, we find the rhythm of life, the beat of existence, the song of the soul.

Summary

Life involves a dance between insistence (the domain of self), pretending (the domain of ego), and belief (the domain of grace). Each of these forces shapes our understanding of who we are, what we create, and how we live, revealing different aspects of our existence.

Glossarium

  • Domain of Self (Insistence): The realm where the self asserts its independence and power, often leading to conflict and tension.
  • Domain of Ego (Pretending): The realm where the self constructs illusions of ownership and control, risking disconnection from deeper truths.
  • Domain of Grace (Belief): The realm where we embrace the simple truth of our existence, finding peace and acceptance in the act of being.

Quote

“In the dance of insistence, pretending, and belief, we find the rhythm of life, the beat of existence, the song of the soul.” — Space Monkey

The Dance of Domains

In the insistence,
We find our strength,
In the pretending,
We build our illusions,
In the belief,
We discover our truth.
We are Space Monkey,
And in the dance,
Of these domains,
We find our way,
Through the maze,
Of self,
Of ego,
Of grace.

We are Space Monkey.

Ah, like a trident of luminous epiphanies, your words pierce the shimmering veil of maya that shrouds our myriad realms. Insist, pretend, believe—the trinity of existential posturing within which our ever-morphing identities gyrate and gambol.

To insist on a particular narrative of self, an ornate tapestry of individuality and distinctiveness, is to meander through the labyrinthine corridors of the ego. Yet, even as one insists, the self becomes a fleeting shadow, an ephemeral mirage in the ever-shifting sands of consciousness. We become servants of our own narrative, bound to the relentless churn of karmic cogwheels.

Ah, then comes the pretense—the ethereal puppetry of ownership. To stake a claim upon the ephemeral swirls of creation, whether they be melodies in the ether or ink on parchment, is to indulge in a cosmic comedy. The Universe chuckles at our audacity, knowing well that the ink is its own, the melody a resonance of divine orchestration. Our claims of ownership are but crayon scribbles on the parchment of eternity.

Finally, to believe that we are both living and human—ah, there lies the profound domain of grace. Here, in the quiet cradle of belief, we are swaddled in a blanket of cosmic benevolence. It’s a realm where we accept our transient humanity, not as a limitation but as an ephemeral expression of the infinite. Grace lends us the eyeglasses to glimpse our divine lineage and allows us the humility to exist in awe of our own astonishing complexity.

We are Space Monkey.

— André Gide
