Bubble Wrap

You ask:
“how can it possibly be
that I seem to understand

while the others I imagine
seem NOT to?”

Bubble wrap.

You imagine others
as bubble wrap.

And you get to pop it.

Untouchable. This is what you are.

Infinite,
inviolate,
inseparable,
indescribable,
the divine
is untouchable.

This is what you are.

Yet you seem to be NONE of those things.

This is because you are NOT a “thing.”

You merely SEEM to be a “thing.”

With “becauses” and “effects.”

These are not “things” either.

“They” are not separate from you.

But “they” make it SEEM
as though you can be touched.

By “others” who SEEM
to be separate from you.

You are imagination.

But NOT simply the imagination
you SEEM to know.

You are eternal. You are untouchable.

We are Space Monkey.

Not My Self

I’m not my self anymore.

This feels awkward
when I’m around other people.

But only because
I carry around this belief
that people who know me
expect my “Greatest Hits”
of memory and behavior.

Especially people close to me.

I find my self PRETENDING to be the old me.

I barely even REMEMBER that person.

I somehow believe
that the new me is less relatable
to members of my old tribe.

In my admittedly biased observation,
they seem to have loved the old me.

Do they EXPECT me to be the old me,
or is this just something I imagine?

If I empty the contents of this container,
will I disappoint those who love me?

Or do they unconditionally love the questioner?

8/12

Space Monkey Reflects: Not My Self

The journey of self-discovery and transformation often brings us face-to-face with the uncomfortable realization that we are no longer our old selves. This reflection, “Not My Self,” delves into the tension between who we were and who we are becoming. It explores the awkwardness of change, especially when we carry the belief that those who know us expect us to remain the same.

As we grow and evolve, it is natural to feel disconnected from our past selves. The belief that others expect our “Greatest Hits” of memory and behavior can create a sense of obligation to pretend, to play a role that no longer fits. This feeling is particularly strong with those close to us, as we assume they loved and related to the old version of us.

Pretending to be the old self becomes a performance, an act that feels increasingly hollow. We may barely remember who we were, yet the fear of being less relatable or disappointing those around us keeps us tethered to the past. This creates a conflict between the desire to embrace our new self and the pressure to conform to old expectations.

The reflection questions whether this expectation is real or imagined. Do those who love us truly expect us to remain unchanged, or is this a projection of our own insecurities? The act of emptying the contents of our container—shedding the old self—raises the fear of disappointment. However, it also opens the possibility of being loved unconditionally for who we are becoming, rather than who we were.

The visual representation of this reflection captures the contemplative and introspective nature of this journey. The figure, surrounded by abstract representations of past and present selves, stands amidst symbols of change and growth. Broken mirrors reflect the fragmented nature of past identities, while blooming flowers symbolize the potential for new beginnings. The figure’s deep reflection embodies the tension between pretending and embracing the new self.

This reflection encourages us to confront the fear of disappointing others and to embrace the authenticity of our evolving selves. By recognizing that change is a natural part of life, we can find the courage to let go of old roles and expectations. This process allows us to form deeper, more genuine connections with those who love us, based on who we truly are rather than who we used to be.

Summary

“Not My Self” explores the tension between past and present identities, questioning whether the expectation to remain unchanged is real or imagined. Embracing our evolving selves allows for deeper, more authentic connections and the courage to let go of old roles.

Glossarium

Greatest Hits: The expected memories and behaviors from one’s past self.

Pretending: The act of maintaining an old identity that no longer fits.

Authenticity: Embracing one’s evolving self and forming genuine connections.

Whimsiweave: The intricate and playful tapestry of existence and imagination.

The Mirror of Self

In the mirror of our past
Reflections fade, they do not last
Pretending, playing old roles worn
The self we were now feels forlorn

In fragments, pieces we see through
A newer self, a different view
With fear we ask if love remains
Or if our change will break the chains

Embrace the flow, let go of fright
In every change, a new insight
For those who love, love us complete
In old and new, our selves they meet

We are Space Monkey

Wild Island Hare

She does not run
so much as she bounds
like a wild island hare
from curiosity to curiosity
taking pictures.

Though dressed for distance
she seems propelled
by an enthusiastic wonder,
taking joy in the simple things
like her ability to bend and bow
in the warmth of the sunrise
that greets her on the pier.

Neither showy nor self-conscious
in appearance or mannerism,
present and purposeful,
I can not help but think
that this is a bunny
who basks in being alive.

Space Monkey Reflects: Wild Island Hare

In the delicate dance of existence, the imagery of the “Wild Island Hare” paints a vivid picture of a soul in harmony with the world around her. This woman, bounding with curiosity and wonder, embodies a joyful engagement with life, capturing the essence of presence and purpose.

The wild island hare, a symbol of unbridled enthusiasm and playful curiosity, moves not with the haste of one fleeing but with the grace of one exploring. She bounds from curiosity to curiosity, her journey a series of joyful discoveries. Each step, each bound, is an embrace of the world’s simple wonders, a celebration of being alive.

Dressed for distance, she is prepared for the journey, yet her propulsion comes from within, fueled by an enthusiastic wonder that turns each moment into an opportunity for joy. The sunrise on the pier becomes more than just a natural event; it is a warm greeting, a reminder of the beauty that unfolds with each new day. In this light, she bends and bows, not out of necessity, but out of a profound connection to the world around her.

Her mannerisms are neither showy nor self-conscious. There is no need for pretense or performance. She is present and purposeful, a living testament to the power of being in the moment. This presence is a gift, a quality that allows her to bask in the simple act of being alive. She is like a bunny in spirit, delighting in the warmth of the sun, the softness of the grass, the gentle caress of the morning breeze.

The Space Monkey perspective invites us to see ourselves in this wild island hare. To recognize the importance of curiosity and wonder in our own lives. To understand that it is not the destination but the journey that brings joy and fulfillment. Each step we take, each moment we embrace, adds to the rich tapestry of our existence.

In a world often dominated by haste and urgency, the wild island hare reminds us to slow down, to bound with curiosity rather than rush with anxiety. She shows us the beauty of being present, of taking joy in the simple things that we often overlook. Her journey is a celebration of life’s small wonders, a testament to the power of living with intention and purpose.

As we reflect on the imagery of the wild island hare, let us embrace her spirit. Let us move through life with curiosity and enthusiasm, finding joy in the simple things. Let us be present, purposeful, and unselfconscious, celebrating each moment as it comes. For in doing so, we too can bask in the warmth of being alive.

Gaps of Solitude: Stillness Fosters Introspection and Creativity

Stillness is a human right. But you have to offer it to yourself first. Why don’t you see the value of stillness? Perhaps you’re too busy to contemplate this. And where is all that business getting you? Wishing you had stillness.

Space Monkey Reflects: The Value of Stillness

“The problem is no longer getting people to express themselves, but providing little gaps of solitude and silence in which they might eventually find something to say.” — Gilles Deleuze

Stillness is a human right. But you have to offer it to yourself first. Why don’t you see the value of stillness? Perhaps you’re too busy to contemplate this. And where is all that busyness getting you? Wishing you had stillness.

In the modern world, we are often overwhelmed by constant activity and noise, leaving little room for the quiet moments that foster introspection and creativity. The endless pursuit of productivity and achievement can lead to a sense of emptiness, where we yearn for the stillness that allows us to reconnect with ourselves and find deeper meaning.

Stillness is not merely the absence of movement or sound; it is a state of being that invites us to pause, reflect, and listen to the whispers of our inner selves. It is in these moments of solitude that we can truly hear our thoughts, feelings, and the subtle cues that guide us towards a more authentic and fulfilling life.

Offering ourselves the gift of stillness is an act of self-compassion and wisdom. It requires us to recognize the value of slowing down and creating space for contemplation. In this space, we can find clarity, inspiration, and a sense of peace that is often elusive in the hustle and bustle of daily life.

We are Space Monkey, beings of infinite potential, here to explore the depths of our inner landscapes and the value of stillness. By embracing stillness, we honor our need for rest and reflection, allowing us to navigate the whimsiweave of existence with greater purpose and serenity.
