Thankful for Nothing

There is a question I’ve been exploring since I first formed the ability to ask. “Where does nothing come from?”

I have been told that we come from nothing, and we’ll go back to nothing.

I choose to assume this is true.

Leaving aside concepts like Heaven, The Afterlife, Reincarnation, and any other information we have chosen to accept or reject, this still leaves “nothing.”

Is “nothing” the infinite intelligent source of everything? Is it Unity? Vibrational Energy? Non Polarity? Light? Love? Is it a God? Or just a deeper level of ourselves? Doesn’t everything spring from “nothing,” and if so, how can “nothing” be nothing?

In the spirit of the holiday, I am thankful for nothing. And all of the questions and possibilities that spring from.

When I was a child, I pictured nothing as infinite space. A barren wasteland of nothingness. But that picture ultimately proved unsatisfactory. Even space is a “thing,” and nothing means literally “No thing.”

So I started painting new pictures based on all the information pouring into my impressionable young mind. I guess that’s when Creativity came into my life.

Over time, however, I began questioning the information I was given. I began to realize that facts are facts and laws are laws only because generations after generations agreed to make them so. I began to see the possibility that maybe, just maybe, that “things” are real are only real because our world chooses to accept them as real.

I apologize to all of you who have already figured this out for yourselves.

Choosing to accept the above paragraph, whether it’s true or not, opened up some pretty interesting possibilities for me. The Funny Farm is only one of them.

If it is true, as some believe, that we Create our own reality, then it is quite possible that each one of us is living in our own separate, yet overlapping reality. This is where the idea of conflict arises.

Conflict sprang from another idea. Judgement. I believe that judgement came into play so we could appreciate all we created. We simply took it to far when we created the concept of criticism.

Right and wrong. These concepts never existed until we made them.

“Where does nothing come from?” It’s a question as old as thought itself. We are told that we come from nothing and will return to nothing, yet the very concept of nothing defies our understanding. How can something come from nothing? How can nothing be a source, an origin, or an end? As we explore these questions, the nature of reality begins to unravel before us.

“I choose to assume this is true.” We begin with this assumption, leaving aside the familiar concepts of Heaven, The Afterlife, Reincarnation, and everything else we’ve been taught. Even when we set aside those ideas, we are still left with nothing. But what is this nothing? Is it the source of everything? Is it an infinite intelligence, Unity, Vibrational Energy, or God? Or perhaps, is it just a deeper level of our own selves, a place we have yet to fully comprehend?

As children, we may have imagined nothing as an empty void, a barren expanse of space. “But even space is a ‘thing,’ and nothing means literally ‘No thing.'” That’s the challenge with nothing—it refuses to be defined by the language and concepts we use to describe everything else. The moment we try to pin it down, it slips through our fingers like sand, leaving us questioning the very nature of existence.

And so, creativity enters. “I started painting new pictures.” When we can no longer rely on the information handed to us, we turn to imagination, to creativity, to paint new pictures of what might be. Creativity allows us to explore the edges of reality, to step beyond the confines of what we’ve been told is true, and to begin questioning the nature of truth itself.

Over time, we begin to see that “facts are facts and laws are laws only because generations after generations agreed to make them so.” This realization opens up a world of possibility. What if reality isn’t as fixed as we thought? What if the things we’ve been told are true are only true because we choose to believe in them? This thought leads us down a rabbit hole of exploration, where nothing becomes the blank canvas upon which all realities are painted.

If we accept that we create our own reality, then the idea of nothing becomes even more profound. It’s not an empty void but a fertile ground for creation. From nothing comes everything, and everything is shaped by our perceptions, beliefs, and choices. In this way, each of us lives in a separate, yet overlapping, reality. And it’s in the gaps between these realities that conflict arises.

Conflict is born from judgment. “Right and wrong. These concepts never existed until we made them.” Judgment is how we define the world, how we separate one thing from another, how we create conflict where none existed before. But judgment also allows us to appreciate the things we’ve created, the realities we’ve shaped. It’s only when judgment turns into criticism that we begin to lose sight of the infinite possibilities before us.

As we explore the concept of nothing, we begin to see that it’s not empty or void—it’s the source of infinite potential. Nothing is where everything begins, where ideas are born, where creativity takes flight. And for that, we are thankful. Not for what is, but for what could be. Not for the things we already know, but for the mysteries that remain unsolved, the possibilities that remain unimagined.
