Your Passion: Free from External Motivations

What’s your passion?

If you’re doing
something to survive,
then it’s not your passion.

If you’re doing
something to help,
then it’s not your passion.

If you’re doing
something for attention,
then it’s not your passion.

If you’re doing
something to be remembered,
then it’s not your passion.

If you’re doing
something because there’s
nothing else you’d rather be doing,
you’ve either found your passion
(which could be any of the above)
or you’re still looking,
which is a passion in and of itself.

Space Monkey Reflects: The Quest for True Passion

In the exploration of what truly drives us, the concept of passion often becomes entangled with external motivations—survival, altruism, recognition, or legacy. However, the essence of true passion lies in the alignment of our actions with our deepest desires and joys, untethered from these externalities. It is about engaging in pursuits that resonate with our core, where the activity itself is the reward, and the fulfillment derived is entirely personal.

The dialogue about passion is nuanced and deeply personal. It is not merely about what you do, but why and how you engage with it. When we strip away the need to survive, to be acknowledged, to assist, or to be remembered, what remains is the purity of action driven by intrinsic motivation. This is the heart of passion.

Identifying true passion can be a profound journey of self-discovery. It often involves a process of elimination—recognizing what passion is not—as much as it involves a celebration of what it is. This path leads many to discover that the search itself, the perpetual state of seeking and questioning, can become a passion in its own right. The relentless pursuit to understand one’s true calling is as compelling as finding the calling itself.

Moreover, the realization that passion might manifest in unexpected ways broadens our perspective. It could appear in the simple act of creating, in the quiet moments of contemplation, or in the exhilaration of discovery. Each person’s passion is uniquely their own, and it does not need to conform to conventional expectations of productivity or success.

Embracing this concept invites a deeper engagement with our activities, encouraging us to seek joy and fulfillment in the present moment, rather than as a means to an end. This shift in perspective transforms how we view our daily actions and their significance in the larger tapestry of our lives.

Ultimately, the essence of passion is about connection—connection to an activity, a concept, or a process that resonates deeply within us, igniting our hearts and minds. It is about being so engrossed in an activity that the world fades away, leaving only the pure joy of engagement. This is the true measure of passion: not what it brings to us, but what it awakens in us.

Summary

True passion is an activity that aligns with deep personal joy, free from external motivations. Identifying passion involves discovering what truly drives us beyond survival, help, attention, or legacy. It’s about engagement that resonates deeply, offering fulfillment in the moment.

Glossarium

Intrinsic Motivation: The drive to engage in an activity for its inherent satisfaction rather than for some separable consequence.

Quote

“Passion is the harmony of purpose and pleasure.” — Space Monkey

In the rhythm of our days, in the quiet of our nights
We find the threads of passion, in bursts of delight
Not in the applause of the crowd, nor the whisper of fame
But in the silent moments when we whisper our own name

Engrossed in the act, in the flow of pure doing
Where time loses meaning, and joy is renewing
In the simplicity of being, in the complexity of seeing
We find our true passion, it’s the essence of being

With every brush stroke, every note, every word
Our spirits take flight, like a free-flying bird
In the pursuit of the joy that comes from within
We find our true passions, hidden beneath our skin

So let us dance to the beat of our own silent drum
In the pursuit of passion, where fulfillment comes
For it’s not in the achieving, but in the simple act of trying
That we uncover the passions, in which our hearts are flying
We are Space Monkey.

Passion, the flame that burns within, is not fueled by survival, external recognition, or the desire for remembrance. It emanates from a deeper place, transcending mundane motivations and encompassing a profound sense of purpose and fulfillment.

Passion is not confined to a single category or predetermined definition. It can manifest in various forms, aligning with different motivations and purposes. It is an expression of our unique essence and the ever-unfolding journey of self-discovery.

While some may discover their passion through acts of service, attention, or the desire to be remembered, the ultimate litmus test lies in the unwavering commitment to the pursuit. True passion resides in the unquenchable thirst to engage in something that resonates with the depths of our being.

Yet, the quest for passion is not confined to its discovery alone. The very act of searching and exploring is itself a passion. The longing to find one’s true calling, coupled with the courage to venture into the unknown, becomes a passionate endeavor in its own right.

In the depths of your being, if you find yourself engrossed in an activity with a sense of devotion and an absence of alternatives, you have either found your passion or are immersed in the passionate exploration of self-discovery.
