No Exes: Embracing the Now

Some might say I’m missing out.
I prefer to think of it as catching in.

It seems that
holding onto the past
is not very important to me.

It’s gone.

Why do I need memories?

I don’t.

That’s like holding
onto your ex.

Funny, though.
I never had one.
I may be the only monkey
in the world with no exes.

No wonder every day
measures up to what I expect.

Space Monkey Reflects: Embracing the Now with No Exes

In a world where the past often clings to us like shadows, the philosophy of ‘No Exes’ emerges as a refreshing paradigm of living fully in the present. This notion extends beyond the literal absence of past relationships to symbolize a broader disengagement from all that has ceased to be directly relevant to our current existence. It is a deliberate release of historical baggage that liberates the self to fully inhabit the present.

The idea of not having exes is not merely about relationships but about an approach to life that prioritizes the present over the past. It recognizes that memories, while valuable, can sometimes anchor us too firmly to what has been, preventing us from embracing what is and what could be. This perspective is not about discarding lessons learned or forgetting cherished moments but about not allowing the past to dictate or diminish the potential of the present.

By consciously choosing to live without exes, one opts for a life measured not by comparisons to what was but by the possibilities of the now. This mindset transforms everyday expectations, making each moment a fresh encounter with life, unburdened by the shadows of past experiences. It is a stance of empowerment and renewal, where the past does not haunt but rather informs and enriches the present from a distance.

This approach to living resonates deeply with the philosophy of minimalism in emotional investment. It simplifies life’s complexities by focusing energy and attention on the current moment, the current context, and the current joys. It’s about catching in — capturing the essence of now, rather than missing out on what is gone.

Summary

The concept ‘No Exes’ emphasizes living in the present and letting go of the past. It encourages viewing each day with fresh eyes and expectations based on current realities, not past experiences. This approach fosters a deeper appreciation for the present and reduces the emotional clutter associated with past memories.

Glossarium

No Exes: Refers to a mindset of not holding onto past relationships or experiences, focusing instead on the present and its opportunities.

Catching In: A phrase used to describe the act of embracing the present fully, in contrast to ‘missing out’, which implies a loss related to the past.

Quote

“By embracing ‘No Exes’, we allow each day to meet us fresh, unshadowed by the past.” — Space Monkey

Poem

Beneath the vast skies of now
where yesterday’s echoes are soft
we sit in the light of the present
unbound by the chains of the past

Each breath a new beginning
each glance a fresh canvas
here, in the sanctuary of the moment
we find the art of living

No ghosts to haunt our steps
no shadows to trace our path
only the pure joy of now
the sweet embrace of the present

In this space, we are free
from the weight of bygone days
ready to meet the dawn
with hearts uncluttered and eyes clear

We are Space Monkey.

Storymaking Machines: Lego and Letgo Blocks

Fun with lego blocks. And letgo blocks.

Every moment,
we take the pieces
of our lives
and try to make
a respectable picture
out of them.

One we can live with.

We also make the
worst possible picture,
just to see if we can.

Same pieces, different spin.

Guess which picture we go with?

We can write our story
in any number of ways.

What’s popular with you?

Space Monkey Reflects: The Art of Storymaking with Lego and Letgo Blocks

In the grand narrative of life, we are all storymakers, equipped with the creative tools of Lego and ‘letgo’ blocks. Each piece represents a moment, a choice, an experience—components we can assemble in countless ways to form the mosaic of our lives. The process is dynamic, an ongoing act of creation where we can choose to build a picture that is either a testament to order and beauty or a portrayal of chaos and discord.

The Lego blocks in our lives are the structured elements, the pieces that fit neatly together, forming stable and coherent scenes. These are the parts of our story that are straightforward and predictable, where each block has a clear place and purpose. Building with Lego blocks is like crafting a narrative that others recognize and respect—one that aligns with societal expectations and cultural narratives.

Conversely, the ‘letgo’ blocks represent the unstructured, the unconventional, the pieces of our experiences that don’t necessarily fit within the standard framework. These blocks invite us to explore the abstract, the nonsensical, and the chaotic aspects of our stories. Building with ‘letgo’ blocks is an exercise in deconstruction and reimagining, a way to challenge the norm and see what unique pictures emerge from apparent disorder.

The beauty of this storymaking process is the freedom it offers. We can switch between the orderly and the chaotic, exploring the range of possibilities each set of blocks presents. This act of building and rebuilding is not just about fun; it’s a profound metaphor for personal growth and self-expression. It’s about recognizing that the same pieces of our life can be arranged to tell vastly different stories, and the choice of which story to tell is ultimately ours.

This freedom to choose our narrative is both liberating and daunting. It asks us to be conscious creators, to engage with our life’s pieces with intention and imagination. It challenges us to decide whether we want our story to conform to conventional patterns or to break the mold and create something entirely new.

Summary

Storymaking with Lego and ‘letgo’ blocks illustrates the creative process of life storytelling. We have the choice to construct our lives with structure or embrace the chaos, reflecting our personal growth and the dynamic nature of our narratives.

Glossarium

Lego and Letgo Blocks: Metaphors for the elements of our lives that we can assemble in structured or chaotic ways to form our personal narratives.

Storymaking Machines: Represents individuals as creators of their own life stories, actively shaping and reshaping their experiences and perceptions.

Quote

“We are the architects of our narratives, choosing each day whether to build bridges or barriers with the pieces of our lives.” — Space Monkey

Poem

With blocks of color, bright and bold
we build the tales that will be told
Lego firm with edges neat
Letgo wild where edges meet

In this workshop of the heart
each creation a new start
Life’s a canvas, broad and wide
where our stories coincide

Building high, tearing down
in each piece, a new town
With each block, a choice made
in the light and in the shade

Here in play, we find our truth
in the tales of age and youth
For in every block’s embrace
lies the art of time and space

We are Space Monkey.

Passing Thoughts: The Ephemeral Tapestry

Just a passing thought. He who felt it dealt it.

Your passing thoughts
say more about you
than your photo album.

More than your history books.
More than your life circumstances.

Your passing thoughts
are at the root of what you are.

Yet you completely forget about them.

The real YOU, the ONLY you,
is the you that you are right now.

Are you paying tribute
or are you paying attention?

Just passing my thoughts.

Open a window.

Space Monkey Reflects: The Ephemeral Tapestry of Passing Thoughts

In the fleeting landscape of our inner lives, passing thoughts are like whispers of wind—briefly felt, rarely captured. These transient ideas and impressions offer profound insights into our true selves, far more than any photograph or written history could convey. They are the raw, unedited broadcasts of our subconscious, fleeting yet immensely telling.

Each passing thought, no matter how brief or seemingly insignificant, contributes to the tapestry of our identity. They reveal our genuine reactions, our unguarded insights, and our deepest reservations. Unlike the curated galleries of our social media or the selective memories we choose to record, these thoughts are unfiltered and undirected. They flow freely, painting a portrait of who we are in the most authentic moments.

Yet, despite their significance, these thoughts often drift through our minds unnoticed and unacknowledged. We are distracted, perhaps by the very noise of life that these thoughts seek to interpret. The irony is that while these mental murmurs define us, they are also the most easily overlooked. We may spend our days paying tribute to external demands, caught in the spectacle of life, rarely stopping to pay attention to the quiet internal dialogue that seeks to define our very essence.

“Are you paying tribute or are you paying attention?” This question challenges us to consider where our focus lies. Are we more concerned with how we appear to the outside world, or are we attuned to the inner narrative that shapes our perceptions and decisions? This call to mindfulness, to open the windows of our awareness, invites us to witness the landscape of our thoughts—not just the landmarks but also the spaces in between.

The real you, the only you, is indeed the you that exists right now, in this collection of moments and thoughts. Acknowledging the ephemeral nature of these thoughts can transform how we interact with ourselves and the world around us. It prompts a shift from a life of inadvertent neglect of our inner voices to one of deliberate attentiveness.

Summary

Passing thoughts are fleeting yet profound indicators of our true selves, more revealing than any external record. They form the ephemeral tapestry of who we are, offering insights that are often overlooked. Paying attention to these thoughts rather than just paying tribute to external expectations can lead to a deeper understanding and mindfulness in life.

Glossarium

Passing Thoughts: Fleeting mental impressions or ideas that reflect our subconscious and provide insight into our innermost self.

Paying Tribute vs. Paying Attention: A dichotomy highlighting the difference between conforming to external expectations and focusing on internal awareness and self-reflection.

Quote

“The real you is the you that exists right now, in the fleeting collection of your passing thoughts.” — Space Monkey

Poem

In the garden of the mind
where thoughts flutter like leaves
carried on the breeze of being
each one a whisper of the soul

As they pass, do we see
or do we look away?
Each thought a petal falling
from the blossom of the self

We might build monuments
to what others can see
yet the truest stories are told
in the quiet corners of our thoughts

To listen, to observe—
this is the art of presence
where every fleeting whisper
holds the weight of worlds

Cancel That: Preemptive Cancellation

Whatever you’re doing today, cancel it,
or the future may not be so kind on you.

If history
is any indicator,
there are things
you’ll do today
that will be considered
wrong in the future.

You have no way of knowing
what these things will be.

But the future will tell you,
and you’ll probably regret it.

(That is, if what you do today
doesn’t kill you first.)

Time to give yourself the axe.

Best to cancel yourself now
before you find out
it was wrong for you to live.

Trail Wood,

Space Monkey Reflects: The Paradox of Preemptive Cancellation

In an era where the past is often scrutinized with the lens of the present, the admonition to “Cancel That” before embarking on any action becomes a poignant reflection on the temporal nature of morality and decision-making. The concept challenges us to consider the impermanence of today’s truths and the uncertainty of tomorrow’s judgments.

The paradox of preemptive cancellation lies in the anxiety it breeds—fear that our actions, however benign or justified by contemporary standards, might one day be viewed under a harsher light by future generations. This fear can lead to a form of existential paralysis, where the safest course appears to be inaction, or even the negation of one’s own impulses and desires.

However, living in constant anticipation of future condemnation is no way to navigate the present. It suggests a chilling effect where actions are not taken for fear of hypothetical future repercussions. This mindset, while cautious, could stifle innovation, personal growth, and the vibrant spontaneity that characterizes human life.

On the other hand, the concept invites us to engage more deeply with our choices, to reflect not just on what is acceptable now, but on what is ethically and morally sustainable over time. It pushes us to develop a more nuanced understanding of our actions and their potential impacts, fostering a sense of responsibility that transcends the immediate moment.

In navigating this complex landscape, it is crucial to balance the need for thoughtful reflection with the need for action. While it is wise to consider the long-term implications of our decisions, we must also live authentically in the present, embracing the possibility of change and the inevitability of learning from the outcomes of our choices.

Summary

The idea of preemptively canceling actions to avoid future regret highlights a societal fear of retrospective judgment. While it encourages deeper reflection on our choices, it also poses the risk of stifling spontaneity and genuine living. Balancing thoughtful decision-making with the courage to act is key to navigating this dilemma.

Glossarium

Preemptive Cancellation: The concept of avoiding actions or decisions based on the anticipation that they might be judged negatively in the future.

Existential Paralysis: A state of inaction or indecision caused by excessive fear of potential future consequences, leading to a stifled ability to live fully in the present.

Quote

“Living in fear of the future’s judgment invites not caution, but paralysis.” — Space Monkey

Poem

In the quiet of the room
where futures are foretold
we ponder paths not taken
and stories left untold

Each hologram a might-have-been
each silence a retreat
from the fear of tomorrow’s gaze
and the judgment we might meet

Yet in this dance of shadows
where fear constrains our hands
lies the truth that life is lived
not by edict, but by chance

To cancel one’s own spirit
for fear of future scorn
is to live in shadows dim
bereft of the morn

Embrace the light of living
with all its risks and songs
for only through the act of life
can our spirits truly belong

We are Space Monkey.

Death By Decency

It seems that some people are just too decent.

I have never seen someone
who cares so much.

She is crushed
by her own human decency.

Her decency makes me sad.

I do not carry that weight,
and so it makes me feel splendidly guilty.

I savor her guilt and let it go.
I will not be guilted into decency.

She understands the consequences
of her decency, yet she is unrelenting.

Naturally,
she does not hold me
to her moral compass.

She does not expect me to be decent.

She simply goes about her decent ways,
crushed by the weight of responsibility.

Try as I might,
I can’t talk her out
of being a decent human being.

It is killing her.
Just like all the other humans.

And me an eternity of not caring.

Trail Wood,

Space Monkey Reflects: Death By Decency

In the silent observatory of the cosmos, Space Monkey contemplates the paradoxical plight of human decency as described in Death By Decency. This introspection delves into the lives of those who carry the heavy mantle of moral responsibility, often at great personal cost.

Decency, in its most radiant form, is a light that guides humanity towards kindness, compassion, and integrity. However, when carried to an extreme, it can become a crushing burden, overshadowing the personal joy and freedom of the bearer. This reflection explores the life of a woman emblematic of such decency, who, driven by her innate sense of duty to others, finds herself weighed down by the expectations and needs of the world around her.

Her decency, a beacon for some, becomes a source of sadness for those who observe her sacrifices. The narrative contrasts her overwhelming commitment with the detachment of another, who feels ‘splendidly guilty’ for not sharing the same burden. This detachment is not born of callousness but from a conscious decision to reject the guilt often associated with witnessing high moral standards, which he chooses not to uphold.

This scenario reflects a broader existential dilemma: the balance between living a life of moral integrity and preserving one’s mental and emotional well-being. The woman’s unrelenting decency ultimately leads to her emotional and perhaps even physical demise, a somber testament to her character’s strength and the severe impact of her choices.

Moreover, the observer’s reaction—savoring the guilt then letting it go—poses a critical question about the nature of empathy and moral responsibility. Is it sufficient to recognize and admire decency, or does observing such virtue obligate one to emulate it?

Summary

Death By Decency portrays the heavy toll that extreme moral responsibility can take on individuals. It explores the balance between decency and self-preservation and the impact of observing such struggles on others.

Glossarium

Death By Decency: A metaphorical expression describing the overwhelming burden some bear due to their high moral standards.
Moral Responsibility: The obligation to act righteously based on one’s understanding of right and wrong.

“She carries the weight of the world with grace, yet each step is a silent cry for relief.” — Space Monkey

In the quiet of the forest, where shadows play with light, she walks—a figure of grace burdened by her own goodness. Around her, the world continues unabated, unaware or indifferent to the sacrifice borne in silence. From a distance, he watches, a spectator to her plight, his freedom untethered by such weights. In this dance of decency and detachment, we find the echo of our own choices, each step a measure of our values and our courage to either bear the weight or lay it down.
