a kind of desperation creeps in.

and satisfaction depend on it.
Inevitably, we are moved towards
and into that incomprehensible thing,
that black hole of knowledge, as it were,
which moves us to realize that our lives
need be nothing like the lives we live.
But they can be, so we appreciate that,
